If you want video calls on a television, the best-supported direct option in the current evidence is Sony’s BRAVIA Cam CMU-BC1—but only with listed compatible BRAVIA televisions. For other TVs, the dependable route is a webcam connected to a computer that runs the calling app, with that computer sending the picture to the TV. A USB socket on a television does not, by itself, make a webcam work.
“Cam TV” can mean either a camera accessory for a television or a webcam used while the TV acts as a large display. This guide covers both interpretations and shows how to verify the exact TV model, camera, software and calling app before spending money.

Quick picks
| Use case | Best-supported choice | Connection path | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct video calls on a compatible Sony television | Sony BRAVIA Cam CMU-BC1 | Camera connected to the specified BRAVIA TV | Works only with listed TV families, software and supported apps; some televisions include the CMU-BC1M variant. |
| Flexible setup for almost any TV with an existing computer | Logitech BRIO 4K | BRIO to USB computer; computer to TV | Logitech documents this as a computer-mediated setup, not universal direct USB operation on a smart TV. |
| Historical “TV webcam” hardware | Logitech TV Cam | Logitech Revue with Google TV and Logitech Vid HD | Legacy 720p product and not a practical general-purpose recommendation today. |
The first decision is therefore the connection path, not resolution. Decide whether you need a dedicated TV accessory, an officially supported direct-USB camera, or a computer-based system. Then verify model and app compatibility.
What a TV camera actually needs to work
A successful call requires four pieces to cooperate:
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Television: The TV must support a camera input and provide an operating system, app or accessory integration that can use it.
- Camera: The camera must expose a format and USB connection the TV or computer understands.
- Software: The operating system and video-call application must recognize the camera, microphone and permissions.
- Network: The calling device still needs a stable internet connection and an account for the selected service.
Sony’s support documentation explicitly limits compatibility to listed TV and camera combinations. It also states: “Some video chat apps may work with a USB camera for Android™, but Sony does not guarantee compatibility.” That warning matters even when a camera’s plug fits the TV. A port can provide power or storage access without providing a webcam driver, camera permissions or an app that can place calls.
Check the exact model number printed on the TV, not just a family name such as “BRAVIA” or “Google TV.” Region, firmware version and app availability can change the result. Update the television before testing, and confirm that the calling app you intend to use is available for that TV’s software.
Option 1: Sony BRAVIA Cam CMU-BC1 for direct TV calling
What it is
Sony describes the BRAVIA Cam as an external, optional accessory for BRAVIA televisions. The CMU-BC1 supports video chat and additional Sony camera features. The CMU-BC1M version is included with only select television models, so an included camera and a separately purchased CMU-BC1 are not interchangeable assumptions.

Sony lists support across specified BRAVIA families from 2022 through 2025, with named series exclusions. Because the list is model-specific, treat “compatible BRAVIA” as a claim that must be checked against the complete model number. When it is the right choice
- You own a BRAVIA model on Sony’s compatibility list.
- You want the TV itself to run the call instead of keeping a laptop connected.
- Your preferred calling app is supported on that TV and region.
- You are willing to keep TV software current and use Sony’s documented camera path.
How to verify before buying
- Open Sony’s support page for your country and search the exact TV model code.
- Confirm that the model is listed for the CMU-BC1 or that the supplied CMU-BC1M is supported.
- Read the supported-app information for your TV software and region.
- Install pending TV firmware updates before pairing or testing the camera.
- Check the camera placement point, cable reach and any included mounting hardware against your installation.
Do not substitute a generic USB webcam merely because the TV has a USB port. Sony says some Android camera-and-app combinations may work but are not guaranteed. If the desired app is absent or the model is excluded, use a computer-mediated setup instead.
Option 2: Logitech BRIO 4K through a computer
Specifications that matter
| Feature | Logitech BRIO 4K specification | Why it matters for a TV call |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum video mode | 4K at 30 frames per second | Useful when the call service and computer support 4K; higher resolution does not guarantee higher transmitted quality. |
| High-frame-rate mode | 1080p at 60 frames per second | Can make movement look smoother when the calling app supports it. |
| Diagonal field of view | 65°, 78° or 90° | Choose a narrower view for one seated person or a wider view for more people, then confirm the room framing in practice. |
| Focus | Autofocus | Helps maintain a sharp face when the subject moves slightly. |
| Microphones | Two built-in microphones | Provides audio capture at the camera position; room acoustics and distance still determine clarity. |
| Privacy | Attachable privacy shutter | Allows a physical lens block when the camera is not in use. |
These are Logitech’s published specifications; they are not an independent quality ranking. A calling service may downscale 4K, limit frame rate or select a different microphone, so configure the app as well as the camera.
Why BRIO is not a universal direct-TV webcam
Logitech’s support instructions describe BRIO connected to a USB-enabled computer running video-conferencing software, with that computer connected to the TV. The TV is the large screen; the computer supplies the camera drivers, app and call processing. This is materially different from plugging BRIO into the TV and expecting the television to discover it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Computer-based setup
- Place the BRIO above or below the TV at approximately eye level for the people on the call. Attach the privacy shutter so it can be closed when needed.
- Connect BRIO directly to a USB port on the computer. Avoid an unpowered hub during initial setup.
- Connect the computer to the TV using the display input your computer supports, then select that input on the TV.
- Install any current camera software or driver offered for your computer’s operating system.
- Open the calling application on the computer and select BRIO as the camera and microphone, unless you use a separate audio system.
- Run the application’s preview. Choose 65°, 78° or 90° framing, set the supported resolution and frame rate, and confirm that faces are not clipped.
- Start a short test call before relying on the setup for an important meeting.
This arrangement is usually the most adaptable choice when the TV is not on Sony’s supported list, when the desired app is unavailable on the TV, or when you already own a suitable computer.

Why the Logitech TV Cam is historical context
The older Logitech TV Cam specification lists 720p video, 5× digital zoom and two directional microphones. It was designed to plug into a Logitech Revue with Google TV and use Logitech Vid HD. Those requirements make it a product for a particular discontinued ecosystem, not a general recommendation for a current smart TV.
Its specifications illustrate an important distinction: a camera can be technically capable yet unusable without the host device and calling software it was designed for. Do not buy used TV Cam hardware unless you specifically maintain that Revue and Vid HD setup and accept its age and limited software support.
How to choose between the two current paths
Choose the BRAVIA Cam when
- Your exact BRAVIA model is listed by Sony for the CMU-BC1 or CMU-BC1M.
- You prefer a clean, TV-only installation with no computer beside the screen.
- The app you need is available on that television.
- You accept Sony’s model, software and app boundaries.
Choose BRIO plus a computer when
- Your TV has no documented direct-camera support.
- You need a calling app that runs reliably on a computer but not on the TV.
- You want to move the same webcam between a desk and the TV.
- You need selectable 65°, 78° or 90° framing, 4K/30 or 1080p/60 modes, autofocus and a physical shutter.
Do not choose based on resolution alone
Resolution is only one part of a call. A 4K camera cannot overcome an unsupported TV app, weak network, poor lighting or a microphone placed too far from the speakers. Compatibility and connection path should be settled before comparing pixels.

Field of view and seating distance
A 65° diagonal view generally concentrates on one person at a normal seated distance; 78° offers more surrounding space; 90° includes a wider group but can show more of the room. Those angles are camera specifications, not guarantees of room coverage. Measure the distance from the TV to the seating area and use the camera preview to check headroom, side margins and whether anyone is hidden at the edge.

Camera height and angle
Mount the lens near eye level. A camera far below the screen points upward, while one high above the TV points downward; both can make participants look away from the conversation. Center the camera horizontally with the main seating position. Secure the mount so cable tension cannot shift the view.
Lighting
Place the strongest light in front of the speakers rather than directly behind them. A bright window behind a participant can turn the face into a silhouette. Test the image with the room lights on and curtains in their normal position.
Microphone placement
The BRIO’s two microphones sit at the camera, so distance and reflective walls affect intelligibility. Keep the camera close enough for voices to be clear, or select a separate microphone in the computer’s call settings. If the TV is playing its own audio, use echo cancellation and keep speaker volume moderate to prevent feedback.

- Record the TV’s full model number and region.
- Install TV, computer and camera updates before troubleshooting.
- Confirm the calling app is available on the device that will run the call.
- Verify camera, microphone and privacy-shutter states in the app preview.
- Check that the TV is on the correct input when using a computer.
- Make a short test call from the final seating positions.
- Close the physical shutter or disconnect the camera when it is not needed.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The TV does not detect a USB camera
- Confirm that the television model appears on the manufacturer’s supported list for that camera.
- Update the TV software and restart it completely.
- Check whether the desired app supports camera input on that TV version.
- Try the documented camera connection and cable, not an unpowered hub or extension.
- If the model or app is not listed, stop treating the issue as a driver fault and switch to a computer-mediated setup.
On Sony televisions, an unlisted generic USB camera may function in some Android combinations, but Sony does not guarantee it. An intermittent success is not the same as supported compatibility.
Best Value

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
The computer sees BRIO but the call shows a black image
- Make sure the privacy shutter is open.
- Select BRIO explicitly in the calling app instead of leaving the camera on “default.”
- Close other applications that may have exclusive camera access.
- Reconnect the camera directly to the computer and test another USB port.
- Check operating-system camera permissions and the app’s own permissions.
People can see you but cannot hear you
- Select the intended BRIO or external microphone in the call’s audio settings.
- Check the system input meter while speaking.
- Move closer or reduce background noise and TV speaker volume.
- Run the app’s microphone test before changing video settings.
The picture is cropped or the group does not fit
- Move the camera farther from the seating area.
- Switch from 65° to 78° or 90° when a wider group view is needed.
- Recenter the mount and check the preview at the actual seating distance.
- Do not assume digital zoom creates more usable room coverage; it only narrows the image.
Privacy and household security
A camera in a shared room can reveal people, conversations and routines. Use the BRIO’s physical shutter when it is idle, or disconnect the camera. For a BRAVIA Cam, follow the TV’s camera and microphone permissions and disable features you do not need. Tell other household members when a call is active, and avoid placing the camera where it captures private areas unnecessarily.
Keep the TV or computer software updated, protect the calling account with a strong unique password and enable available sign-in protections. A camera indicator or app status is useful, but a physical shutter or unplugged cable is the clearest off state.
Cost, availability and what to verify at purchase
Current prices, stock and regional bundles were not established in the available specifications, so check the seller and manufacturer immediately before ordering. The BRAVIA Cam may be an optional accessory or included as CMU-BC1M with a particular television. BRIO pricing should be evaluated together with the cost of any computer, display cable, mount or separate microphone required for your room.
Before checkout, confirm:
- Exact TV model and market region.
- Camera variant: CMU-BC1, included CMU-BC1M or BRIO 4K.
- Required operating-system and app support.
- USB cable length, mounting method and available ports.
- Return policy in case the TV’s software or app does not support the camera.
Bottom line: buy for the supported path
For a listed BRAVIA television, Sony’s BRAVIA Cam CMU-BC1 is the clearest direct-to-TV choice because Sony documents the integration. For an unsupported or mixed-brand TV, Logitech BRIO 4K is a capable webcam when a USB computer runs the call and feeds the TV display. No camera should be called a universal TV webcam solely because its connector fits a USB port; the exact television, software and app determine whether the setup works.
