Video becomes a strategic business asset when an organization can find, interpret, and reuse information in recordings—not simply when it accumulates more files. Searchable training, support, sales, and operations video can help teams spot recurring questions, improve learning, and inform product choices. The value depends on having a clear use, reliable context and metadata, appropriate rights and access, and a plan for storage and retention.
Why business video is becoming a data-management issue
Organizations now create video for employee training, internal communication, marketing, sales, customer support, and recorded operations. Those recordings can contain useful knowledge, but unmanaged files are difficult to discover and expensive or risky to retain. Treating video as governed information means deciding who can access it, how it is described and searched, and when it should be kept or deleted.

Vimeo’s 2025 survey of 1,000 global enterprise business leaders found that 65% of organizations reported a surge in video creation over the prior two years. Another 73% expected volume to accelerate over the following three years; that is respondents’ expectation, not a measured forecast. Vimeo also reported that 79% of organizations said video contributes to business outcomes. These vendor-published survey results describe reported practices and perceptions, not independent proof that video causes financial gains. Vimeo’s 2025 State of Video at Work findings

What can businesses learn from video data?
Transcription, searchable metadata, and analytics can make recordings easier to navigate and compare. Instead of replaying an entire call or training session, a team may be able to find the relevant passage, identify recurring themes, and share the result with people who need it. Vimeo’s report describes these as potential uses; its survey does not measure the outcomes each organization achieved.

Why potential and readiness do not yet match
In Vimeo’s 2025 survey, 98% of enterprise leaders recognized potential value in insights from video data, while 45% said they had tools to extract those insights effectively. The gap suggests that collecting video and making it useful are separate challenges. Among large enterprises, Vimeo reported an average of five video platforms in use. It also found that 57% of organizations lacked a clear, consistent, well-communicated video strategy.
Fragmented systems can make recordings harder to find and govern across departments. Privacy and compliance are part of this operational problem: 63% of respondents cited privacy regulations as a top concern and 57% worried about compliance. These are reported concerns in a vendor survey, not measurements of violations or legal risk for a particular organization. Vimeo’s survey findings on video insights and platform needs
What makes video an asset—and what can erode its value?
A recording alone is not necessarily an asset. Its usefulness depends on whether people can understand its subject, locate relevant sections, rely on its quality, and lawfully access and reuse it for a defined purpose. Context, rights, metadata, and a repeatable way to apply insights all matter.

Deloitte’s December 2025 framework for valuing data assets describes datasets, contextualized insights, and reusable models as forms of data built for consumption and repeatable value. It identifies income, cost, and market-benchmarking approaches to valuation, with adjustments for quality, rights, and context; no single method fits every asset. Deloitte also describes “data debt”: lifecycle costs and liabilities, including poor quality, security and compliance exposure, and decay, that can reduce value. Broader data studies provide context, but they do not establish video-specific returns. The UK’s 2025 business data study found that 83% of UK businesses handled digital data and 72% of those businesses analyzed it; 27% of businesses handling digital data used AI-based technologies. It also found that 26% of businesses investing in raw data or databases introduced a new business model, compared with 10% of businesses not investing. That is an association in a descriptive study, not proof of causation, and none of these figures is specific to video. UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology’s 2025 study
Deloitte reported that survey respondents who treated data as an asset and invested in monetization were more likely to outperform peers and achieved two to three times the ROI on key metrics. This is a reported association about data assets generally, not a causal finding or a video-specific return. Deloitte’s data-asset analysis

How to assess an enterprise video approach
A platform or workflow should be judged by whether it solves an organization’s retrieval and governance problems, not by the volume of features. These criteria are practical evaluation questions, not a ranking of vendors.
- Search and retrieval: Can users search within video and reach relevant segments rather than only locate whole files?
- Transcription and metadata: Are transcripts and descriptive tags accurate enough for the recordings, languages, and terminology involved?
- Analytics quality: Can teams understand how insights are generated and validate automated interpretations before acting?
- Security and governance: Are access controls, privacy protections, retention policies, and compliance needs addressed?
- Cross-department access: Can relevant teams find and reuse material without exposing confidential recordings too broadly?
- Workflow and usability: Does the approach fit how people create, approve, search, and share video?
- Cost and scale: Do storage, processing, administration, and retention costs remain workable as the library grows?
Vimeo’s 2025 report says enterprise leaders sought security and compliance, AI, analytics, support across departments, lower cost, streamlined workflows, and scalability in video platforms. A unified platform was seen as advantageous by 66% of leaders in its executive summary. Those findings describe reported preferences; they do not show that consolidation is right for every organization. Vimeo’s 2025 executive summary and platform findings
What broader data governance adds to the picture
The asset idea applies beyond video. The OECD describes data as a production input and as a bridge that can enable transactions and markets, while also emphasizing the risks of data misuse. That framing helps explain why video can matter to business strategy, but it is not empirical evidence of video-specific value. OECD, Going Digital to Advance Data Governance for Growth and Well-being
Likewise, the European Commission estimated EU cloud data flows at 46,000 petabytes in 2024 and their economic value at €77 billion in the EU. Those estimates concern cloud data flows overall, not video volumes or the value of an individual company’s recordings. European Commission’s 2024 cloud data-flow estimates
