Fix ordinary search fundamentals before chasing generative-engine-optimization (GEO) tricks. For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, a page must first be crawlable, discoverable, indexable and eligible for a normal Search snippet. Google says those AI features add no separate technical eligibility layer. The practical work is therefore familiar SEO: open access to important URLs, connect them with internal links, keep essential information in readable text, align structured data with what visitors see, and publish genuinely useful material for a defined audience. Only after those conditions are sound should you use platform reports to see whether AI systems cite or send traffic to your pages.

What AI search SEO means for a website builder

“GEO” is often presented as a new discipline involving special files, markup or content formats. Google’s own position is narrower and more useful: “From Google Search’s perspective, optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.” That statement comes from Google Search Central’s guide to generative-AI features on Google Search.

In Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, the system may answer a query with a generated response and show supporting links. A page can be considered for those links only when it is indexed and eligible to appear with a Search snippet. Google’s documentation says, “There are no additional technical requirements” for that supporting-link eligibility. This is a condition, not a guarantee: satisfying it does not ensure that Google crawls the URL, indexes it, selects it for a particular query or displays it in an AI response.

That guidance applies to Google’s products. Other AI services can use different crawlers, indexes and ranking systems, so a Google-ready site is not automatically visible everywhere. Treat each platform’s reporting and documentation as evidence about that platform rather than as a universal score for “AI visibility.”

Eligibility comes before optimization

Allow the relevant crawlers to reach important pages

Review your site’s robots.txt, hosting firewall and CDN rules. A disallow rule, bot challenge, login wall or accidental noindex directive can prevent an otherwise excellent article from entering the search system. Check both the site-wide rules and any path-specific controls created by a page builder, security plug-in or deployment platform. Keep private areas private, but make public product, service, documentation and editorial URLs accessible to the crawlers you intend to serve.

Do not assume that a successful browser visit proves crawler access. A browser may execute scripts, present a cookie challenge or use a logged-in session that a crawler cannot. Look for blocked resources, intermittent server errors and redirects that end at a different canonical URL. Resolve access problems on the smallest set of templates that controls the largest number of pages.

Make pages indexable and snippet-eligible

For each high-value URL, verify that the canonical version is the one you want indexed, that it is not marked noindex, and that the main content is available without an interaction that a crawler cannot complete. The same page should be capable of appearing in ordinary Google Search with a useful snippet. If a page is intentionally excluded from Search, it should not be part of an AI-search growth plan.

Use Search Console’s URL Inspection tool to check a representative sample: your home page, a key category, a new article, a conversion page and a deep URL. Inspect both the published URL and the canonical selected by Google. “Eligible” means the technical conditions are met; it does not mean that indexing or an AI citation will follow.

Connect pages with crawlable internal links

Important URLs should be reachable through ordinary HTML links, not only through an on-site search box, filters or a JavaScript event. Give each major page a sensible path from navigation, a hub, a related article or another contextual link. Descriptive anchor text helps people and crawlers understand the destination.

Audit orphan pages, links that return errors, chains of redirects and navigation that changes only after a script runs. An XML sitemap can help discovery, but it does not replace internal links or guarantee indexing. Link to the canonical URL and keep duplicate parameterized versions from diluting your site’s structure.

Keep critical information in text

AI systems need content they can retrieve and interpret. Put specifications, prices, eligibility rules, definitions, procedures and answers in selectable page text. An infographic, screenshot or video can improve understanding, but it should not be the only place a material fact appears. Provide meaningful alternative text for images and a transcript or written summary when a video carries essential instructions.

Check the rendered page, not just the source template. Some builders ship an empty HTML shell and insert the article after a client-side request; others hide tab content until a click. Progressive enhancement, server-rendered text or otherwise accessible content gives both visitors and crawlers a reliable baseline. Good page experience and relevant visual media remain useful, but neither compensates for missing text or blocked access.

Keep structured data honest

Google does not require special schema.org markup for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Use structured data when it supports ordinary Search features or helps describe the page, and make sure every marked-up fact is visible to visitors on that URL. Do not add reviews, prices, authorship, dates or other properties that the page does not actually show. Mismatched markup can create confusion and may make a rich-result feature ineligible; it is not a shortcut into an AI answer.

Publish material that deserves to be retrieved

Start with a defined reader and a complete task

Choose an identifiable audience and the decision or job the page should help them complete. A builder’s guide might be for a small business owner choosing a site platform, a developer fixing crawlability or a marketer interpreting AI citations. State the context, prerequisites and limits instead of writing a generic paragraph intended for every query.

Map the page to the reader’s likely follow-up questions. If you explain a technical fix, include the symptom, the setting to change, how to verify the result and what to do if it fails. If you describe a policy or specification, include the applicable edition, geography and date. Completeness is not a demand for length; it means the page resolves the user’s real goal without forcing them to repeat the search.

Add information that is original and checkable

Google’s people-first guidance favors original reporting, analysis, research, examples and first-hand expertise. Explain how you know a claim, identify the document or authority behind it, and separate a measured result from an expectation. A page that merely rephrases several existing articles gives an AI system little reason to select it as a supporting source.

Demonstrate expertise through precise terminology, maintained documentation, author context where relevant and transparent update dates. Google says E-E-A-T is not itself a single ranking factor; its systems use a mixture of signals to identify helpful content. Treat that as a quality objective, not a checklist that guarantees a position.

Avoid scaled sameness and trend chasing

Publishing many near-identical pages around trending prompts, locations or keywords without adding local facts, data or a distinct use case can create a large crawl burden and a thin experience. Consolidate overlapping pages, redirect obsolete versions and give each surviving URL a reason to exist. AI-assisted drafting does not change the need for editorial review, accurate sourcing and a human answer to a human problem.

A practical AI-search audit for builders

Run the following sequence in order. Fix a blocking issue before spending time on experiments that cannot overcome it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. List the URLs that matter. Export or manually record the pages tied to revenue, support, reputation and strategic topics. Group them by template so one fix can improve many URLs. Mark pages that should remain private or excluded from Search.
  2. Test access. Read the effective robots.txt rules for the relevant paths, then review CDN, WAF and hosting logs or controls for blocked bots, rate limits and challenge pages. Remove accidental blocks, but do not open administrative or customer-only areas.
  3. Check indexability. Use URL Inspection on representative URLs. Confirm the HTTP status, canonical, indexability directives and rendered content. Correct accidental noindex, conflicting canonicals, soft-404 pages, redirect loops and server errors. Request recrawling only after the underlying page is fixed.
  4. Trace discovery. Starting at the home page, follow normal links to each priority URL. Add contextual links from relevant hubs and articles where a page is hard to reach. Repair broken links and avoid relying on search forms or script-only menus as the sole route.
  5. Read the rendered page as a visitor. Confirm that the answer, steps, tables and qualifications appear as text without requiring a click, login or unusual script execution. Add transcripts, captions, text alternatives or visible summaries when media contains essential information.
  6. Validate structured data. Compare each marked-up property with the visible page. Remove unsupported claims and update dates, prices, authors and ratings when the page changes. Keep useful markup for ordinary Search, but do not create an AI-only schema layer.
  7. Evaluate usefulness. For every priority page, identify the audience, task, evidence, original contribution and missing follow-up questions. Replace boilerplate with examples, limitations, maintenance notes or data that another site does not provide.
  8. Record a baseline. Save the affected URLs, the date, indexation status and relevant Search Console or Bing Webmaster Tools observations. This lets you distinguish a technical repair from a change in query demand or platform behavior.

GEO shortcuts that are not established requirements

Google’s guidance does not require a special schema vocabulary, a separate AI instruction file or a particular chunk size for AI Overviews or AI Mode. The documentation specifically advises ignoring tactics such as mechanically chunking content, creating unnecessary files such as llms.txt and pursuing inauthentic mentions as standalone visibility hacks.

That does not make every technique useless in every context. Sensible headings, short sections, descriptive lists and clear entities improve reading and conventional retrieval. A machine-readable file may serve a product’s own documented workflow. Legitimate public relations can earn attention. None of those outcomes should be promised as a direct route to a Google AI citation, and none should displace crawlability, indexation or useful content.

How to measure whether AI search is finding you

Google Search Console

Google includes traffic from AI features in the overall Performance report for Web search. Use the report to watch impressions, clicks, queries, pages and dates for your site’s Google Search presence, then annotate deployments and content changes. The report is a Search measurement surface, not a universal inventory of every AI product that may read your page.

Interpret movement carefully. A click is not the same as a citation, and an appearance in an AI response may not produce a click. Search Console’s aggregate reporting may not answer which sentence was used or why a page was selected. Combine trend data with URL-level inspection and a manual review of important queries where you are allowed to see the result.

Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance

Microsoft’s February 2026 public-preview documentation describes an AI Performance report for supported Microsoft experiences. It can show reported citations, cited pages, grounding queries and trends. These fields help you see which URLs and query themes appear in the experiences covered by the report.

Microsoft cautions that citation and cited-page metrics do not establish ranking, authority or placement. A citation count is therefore not interchangeable with a rank, a traffic number or a quality score. Availability and definitions can change while the feature remains in preview.

Keep the metrics separate

Question Google Search Console Bing AI Performance What it cannot prove
Did people reach my site from Search? Web-search performance data, including traffic from Google AI features Not the primary purpose of the cited-page view That every AI appearance generated a click
Which pages were cited? Not presented as a universal citation ledger Reported cited URLs and citation activity for supported experiences That citation equals ranking, authority or prominent placement
What queries grounded an answer? Search queries associated with your Search data Reported grounding queries for covered AI experiences That either platform represents all AI products or all queries
Can I compare sites or vendors? Use your own Search performance history Use the report’s definitions and trends for your property A universal market-share, visibility or quality score

Use both dashboards as complementary evidence, not as a combined ranking. Label the platform, reporting period, URL and metric whenever you share a result internally. A sudden change can reflect a definition, interface or coverage update as well as a site change.

Prioritize fixes by impact, evidence and effort

When a builder has more issues than time, score each candidate fix on four dimensions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Eligibility impact: Does the problem block crawling, indexing or snippet eligibility, or is it an enhancement?
  • URL reach: How many pages share the template, and how important are those pages?
  • Platform evidence: Is the problem documented by Search Console, a crawler log or a reproducible page inspection, or is it only a theory about AI behavior?
  • Cost and risk: Can you correct it in a setting, or does it require a migration, redesign or content rewrite? Could the fix remove useful content?
Example issue Likely priority Reasoning Typical next action
Robots or firewall blocks priority URLs Immediate Access failure can prevent crawling entirely Permit public paths; keep private paths restricted; verify again
Important page has no internal links High Discovery is weak even if the URL is technically indexable Add contextual links from relevant, already-discovered pages
Core answer exists only in an image or script interaction High Retrieval may miss the information and users face an access barrier Publish equivalent visible text and accessible media support
Structured data omits a nonessential property Usually lower It does not create AI eligibility by itself Add or correct markup only when it serves a documented Search use
No llms.txt file Not an established blocker Google does not require it for AI features Spend the time on access, links and page quality instead

Troubleshoot common builder symptoms

“The page is live, but it never appears”

First inspect access, status, canonical and indexability. Then follow internal links to the URL and check whether the visible answer is present in rendered text. Only after those checks should you investigate content differentiation or query intent. A live URL is not the same as an indexed, snippet-eligible URL.

“Our schema validates, but AI search ignores us”

Validation means the markup is syntactically acceptable; it does not promise a rich result or an AI citation. Compare every property with visible content, then improve the page’s usefulness and evidence. Remove markup that describes information visitors cannot verify.

“We added short chunks and an AI file, with no change”

No result is expected from treating those items as mandatory Google signals. Keep readable headings and sections for people, but redirect the project toward crawl access, internal discovery, indexability and original answers. Record the change so future reporting does not confuse a failed experiment with a technical outage.

“Search Console and Bing show different stories”

They report different products and metrics. Google’s Web performance report is centered on Search traffic, while Bing’s preview emphasizes citations, cited pages, grounding queries and trends in supported experiences. Compare like with like, preserve each platform’s definitions and avoid turning either view into a claim about every AI system.

A maintainable operating routine

  1. At every release: test robots rules, status codes, canonicals, navigation and rendered text on one URL per important template.
  2. Each month: review Search Console Web performance, inspect new or changed priority URLs and look for sudden coverage or click changes after deployments.
  3. When content is updated: preserve the page’s purpose, refresh evidence and dates, update internal links and remove obsolete claims rather than appending contradictory paragraphs.
  4. When a platform changes its report: capture the new definition and date before comparing it with older numbers. Treat preview metrics as directional until their coverage is stable.
  5. Before adding a GEO experiment: write down the hypothesis, affected URLs, platform, success metric and stopping rule. Do not call a citation, click or ranking a universal measure of AI visibility.

The durable strategy is straightforward: make the site accessible, make important pages easy to discover, make their useful information readable, and make every claim worth citing. Platform reports can reveal where that foundation is working, but no dashboard or file can substitute for it.
