How Browser Ad Blockers Work on Android

Android ad blocking can happen in a browser, at the DNS layer, or through a device-wide filtering app. Each method works differently and has distinct limits.

Android ad blockers work at different layers. A browser blocker can inspect page-resource requests and hide matching elements; a DNS filter can stop lookups to known advertising domains; and a filtering app can route traffic from multiple apps through an on-device network component. These methods have different reach and blind spots. Encrypted DNS, by itself, protects lookups in transit—it does not necessarily block ads.

What a browser ad blocker does

A browser-level blocker checks resources a page tries to load—such as scripts, images, or frames—against filtering rules. When a request matches a rule, the browser can prevent that resource from loading. Some blockers also apply cosmetic rules that hide ad elements still present in the page, including spaces left behind by blocked resources.

The exact mechanism depends on the browser and blocker. Mozilla’s technical documentation for Firefox Focus on Android describes one implementation: Android’s WebView calls WebViewClient.shouldInterceptRequest() as resources load, and Focus checks resource URLs using a trie-based domain matcher. Mozilla says Focus’s blocklists are built into the app and updated with app updates. This is a specific account of Firefox Focus, not a description of every Android browser or every Firefox product. Mozilla Firefox Focus content-blocking documentation.

Three filtering layers, with different trade-offs

Approach What it checks Typical scope Key limitation
Browser content blocker Individual resource URLs and, where supported, page elements One browser Depends on browser support and its rules; blocked resources can also affect site features.
DNS filtering Domain-name lookups Devices or apps that use the filtering resolver Domain-level decisions lack page context and may not separate an ad from content served by the same domain.
Device-wide local filtering Network traffic routed through an on-device filtering component Potentially multiple browsers and apps Requires a filtering app and its network setup; optional HTTPS inspection can involve additional certificate trust.

Browser request and cosmetic filtering

Because a browser sees page-level requests, its rules can be more specific than a domain-only decision. Cosmetic filtering can remove or hide unwanted page elements even when the browser cannot or does not block the underlying request. Whether either feature is available—and whether it works through built-in controls or an extension—varies by browser.

DNS filtering

DNS translates a host name into an IP address. A filtering resolver can refuse or redirect lookups for domains on an advertising or tracking list. It does not have the same understanding of a page’s individual resources as a browser filter: if an ad and wanted content come from the same host, blocking that domain can block both or fail to isolate the ad. AdGuard’s Android overview and AdBlock’s mobile guidance describe these network-level limitations.

Device-wide local filtering

Some filtering apps operate beyond one browser by routing connections through an on-device network component. AdGuard says its Android app uses a local VPN/network driver to route traffic through a filtering engine and can block DNS requests to known ad or tracking servers. That is AdGuard’s documented implementation, not a universal description of filtering apps. AdGuard also offers optional HTTPS filtering that installs a locally generated root certificate so the app can inspect encrypted connections. Installing such a certificate changes the device’s certificate-trust configuration, so it is materially different from using browser rules or ordinary DNS filtering. Does encrypted DNS block ads?

Not automatically. DNS over HTTPS (DoH) encrypts DNS lookups in transit; whether lookups for advertising domains are blocked depends on the resolver’s filtering behavior. A privacy feature and an ad-blocking service are separate things.

Mozilla describes Firefox for Android’s DoH as a secure request to look up a website’s IP address and documents four protection modes. Google describes Chrome’s Android Secure DNS as encrypted DNS lookup. In Chrome’s automatic mode, the browser may fall back to unencrypted lookup if it cannot resolve a site; with a custom provider, Google says it does not use that unencrypted fallback. Google also notes that Secure DNS is unavailable when the device is managed or parental controls are enabled. Check the provider’s filtering behavior separately if your goal is ad blocking. What can you use in Android browsers?

Chrome for Android

Chrome’s Secure DNS setting concerns encrypted lookups, not an ad-blocking extension. AdBlock’s mobile help says its browser extension is not supported in Chrome on mobile. That statement concerns AdBlock’s extension; verify the current capabilities of the exact browser and version rather than assuming desktop extension support carries over to Android. AdBlock mobile help.

Firefox for Android and Firefox Focus

Mozilla documents configurable DoH for Firefox for Android. Firefox Focus’s source documentation provides a separate example of browser-level request interception and matching on Android; it should not be read as proof that all Firefox products use the same implementation. Yandex documents third-party ad-blocking extensions compatible with Samsung Internet for Android, but says the feature is in beta and not available to all users. Why ads still appear—and what to try if a site breaks

  • The ad comes from a domain that also serves wanted content. A DNS filter may be unable to block one without affecting the other.
  • The browser or app is outside the filter’s scope. A browser-only blocker does not necessarily cover other apps, while a DNS resolver’s coverage depends on which connections use it.
  • The rule set does not match the request. Filtering relies on rules and lists, and no method catches every ad in every context.
  • A filter blocks something the site needs. If a page fails to load or a feature disappears, turn blocking off for that site if the browser or extension offers a site exception. Yandex documents this option for its extension setup; controls differ elsewhere.

Try a site-specific exception before changing broader device settings. If the problem persists, the filtering method may not offer the page-level control needed to distinguish the unwanted element from the site’s content.

Choosing an approach

  • Choose a browser-level blocker if you mainly want filtering in one browser and that browser currently supports a built-in blocker or compatible extension.
  • Consider DNS filtering if domain-level filtering fits your needs, while recognizing that it cannot reliably separate an ad from content served by the same host.
  • Consider device-wide filtering if you want coverage beyond one browser and accept the local network component and its setup. Review any optional HTTPS inspection separately, including its certificate implications.
  • Treat encrypted DNS as a privacy setting unless the resolver’s filtering is confirmed. Encryption protects the lookup in transit; it does not establish that the provider blocks ads.

Browser and app features change over time. Check the current support page for your exact Android browser, version, and region before relying on a particular extension or setting.
