A candidate wins in the first round only by receiving an absolute majority of valid votes; if no one does, the two leading candidates face each other in a new election. For 2026, the first round is scheduled for October 4 and a runoff, if needed, for October 25.
How the presidential vote is decided
The first-round test is an absolute majority of valid votes—not a majority of everyone who went to the polls. Blank and null votes are excluded from the valid-vote total used to calculate the threshold. The Tribunal Superior Eleitoral (TSE) explains the rule in its guide to how Brazil elects its president.

If no candidate reaches that threshold, the two candidates with the most votes advance to a second round. It is a new election: first-round votes do not carry over, and the candidate who receives more valid votes in the runoff wins.

When Brazil votes in 2026
The TSE’s 2026 election calendar sets the first round for October 4. If a presidential runoff is necessary, it is scheduled for October 25. Those dates are specific to the 2026 general election, not permanent dates for every Brazilian election. The dates appear in TSE Resolution No. 23.751 of February 26, 2026.
How to vote for president in Brazil
Voting is direct and secret, using electronic ballot boxes. For the 2026 election, voting is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Brasília time. The TSE’s 2026 guide to the electronic ballot order says the presidential choice comes after these offices:

- Used Book in Good Condition
- Federal deputy
- State or Federal District deputy
- Two Senate choices
- Governor
- President
At the presidential screen, enter the candidate’s number. The ballot displays the candidate’s name, photograph, office and party so you can check the selection before confirming. The order and hours above are for 2026; consult the TSE’s current voter guidance for the applicable election.

Where to check Brazil election results
For 2026, the TSE identifies its Results website and its mobile app as official public channels. The 2026 results information says disclosure is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. Brasília time. The public display of partial results is not itself the final formal approval and proclamation.

The 2026 rules provide for official disclosure systems developed or approved by the TSE, and for publication of totaled polling-place bulletins. Those published bulletins can be checked against the bulletins produced at polling sections. This gives readers a specific record to compare when following the count; it is distinct from the later formal conclusion of the tally.

After the 2022 presidential runoff, the TSE reported that 124,252,796 votes were counted. That figure is the reported number of votes counted in that election, not a claim about valid votes or turnout in another election. On December 6, 2022, the TSE plenary approved the final second-round tally report and proclaimed Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Geraldo Alckmin elected president and vice-president. The example distinguishes the public count from the subsequent formal approval and proclamation.
