In the first pilot phase, the BCB tested privacy-related features using simulated transactions; its report said further work was needed to meet privacy, personal-data protection and security requirements. Drex is described as a pilot and development project, not a public service with proven privacy protections for everyday users.
What privacy means for Drex
Drex is Brazil’s central bank digital currency project. Its pilot explores digital-asset operations and programmable services on a shared platform. That combination creates a design challenge: the system must support transactions and services involving multiple participants while protecting confidential financial information.

The BCB has described the challenge as balancing decentralization, programmability and privacy within Brazil’s legal framework. Its public summaries do not detail the platform’s precise access-control rules or establish which participants can see which transaction data. So it would be inaccurate to say that transaction details are hidden from every institution or counterparty.

How the BCB tested privacy
A simulated delivery-versus-payment transaction
Phase 1 tested a delivery-versus-payment (DvP) transaction involving a federal public security and customers associated with different institutions. In a DvP transaction, the transfer of an asset and its payment are coordinated. The use case was selected in part because it required information to be exchanged among platform participants, making it relevant to testing privacy solutions and interoperability. Phase 1 ran from July 2023 through October 2024, according to the BCB’s release about the Phase 1 report.

Fictional customers and assets
The activity was simulated: Fabio Araujo, coordinator of the Drex Initiative, said no pilot test involved real customers or assets. The pilot page says end users do not participate directly and that end-user operations are simulated. That means the pilot’s results should not be read as a demonstration of how a member of the public’s personal Drex transaction would be protected in live use.
What safeguards the BCB has disclosed
Banking secrecy is a central benchmark
The BCB has tied Drex privacy to Complementary Law 105 of 2001, Brazil’s Banking Secrecy Law. Araujo described the project’s commitment as guaranteeing financial-transaction privacy while advancing programmability and decentralization. The law provides important context for the requirement, but citing it is not evidence by itself that a particular technical safeguard has been implemented or validated.

Further work remained necessary
The BCB’s Phase 1 report says the pilot tested privacy and programmability features, but that further work was needed to ensure the platform met privacy, personal-data protection and security requirements. The report is described by the BCB as a 73-page publication. That page count describes the report, not the effectiveness of its protections.
In a May 2024 update, the BCB said the solutions tested at that point had not yet reached the maturity needed to guarantee compliance with all legal requirements concerning privacy and personal-data protection. It said population testing would follow only after the relevant requirements were adequately resolved, and that a timeline could not then be determined. This is the BCB’s assessment as of May 2024, not a new technical finding about the project’s status today.

What the pilot status does—and does not—tell users
The BCB’s Drex pilot page labels Phase 1 and Phase 2 as ended and lists the Phase 2 report as under construction. It describes participation by the BCB, the Securities and Exchange Commission of Brazil (CVM), the National Treasury and authorized institutions; the page lists 16 selected pilot participants. It also states that end users are not direct participants and that their activity is simulated.
Those details establish that the work described is a controlled institutional pilot, not direct public use. The BCB’s English-language release said that 13 financial services were being tested in Phase 2 when that release was published; that is a historical count, not a current description of the pilot. The latest status on the pilot page does not provide a public launch date.

What is not yet established publicly
The BCB’s public summaries do not specify the cryptographic tools used, the ledger’s access rules, what validators can see, or the safeguards applied by each participating institution. They also do not provide a public privacy-performance measure. Without those details, readers cannot independently assess whether transaction information is concealed from particular participants or how the system would protect a live user’s data.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe supported conclusion is narrower: privacy and compliance are stated requirements, the pilot tested privacy-related features, and the Phase 1 report called for more work. Whether Drex will satisfy those requirements in a public service depends on the outcome of continuing development and official disclosures.

When will Drex launch in Brazil?
The available BCB status information does not establish a launch date. In May 2024, the Central Bank said population testing depended on resolving privacy requirements and that it could not then determine a timeline. The pilot page now marks Phase 2 ended while its report remains under construction; neither label amounts to an announcement of a public rollout date.
