Blue Origin’s New Shepard offers a brief, suborbital spaceflight: passengers rise above the 100-kilometre Kármán line, spend a few minutes floating weightless, and return by parachute to West Texas. However, there is an important current limitation: on January 30, 2026, Blue Origin announced that it would pause New Shepard flights for no less than two years while it redirects resources to its human lunar program. The company’s passenger pages and inquiry form still describe the experience, but they do not establish that flights are currently operating or that a submitted inquiry will produce a scheduled seat.
What is a Blue Origin space tourism flight?
New Shepard is Blue Origin’s fully reusable, autonomous suborbital rocket system for people and scientific payloads. “Suborbital” means the vehicle reaches space but does not accelerate to orbital velocity and circle Earth. The capsule travels above the Kármán line, then follows a high arc back to Earth.

Blue Origin identifies the Kármán line as 62 miles (100 kilometres) above Earth, an internationally recognized boundary of space. A published passenger timeline places touchdown in the West Texas desert at about 11 minutes after liftoff. That makes the experience much shorter than an orbital mission: the main attractions are the view of Earth and a short period of weightlessness, not days in orbit.

How the flight unfolds
Blue Origin’s timeline is a set of planned markers rather than a promise that every future flight will match the same second-by-second schedule. The sequence below shows what the company says passengers should expect.

Boarding and launch
Boarding begins around 50 minutes before liftoff. The crew enters a pressurized, climate-controlled capsule and secures itself in the seats. During ascent, the rocket climbs at more than three times the speed of sound, according to Blue Origin’s passenger description. The company does not publish a guaranteed launch-day acceleration profile in the reviewed passenger material, so exact g-forces should not be assumed.
Crossing the Kármán line
At roughly three and a half minutes into the flight, the capsule reaches the altitude Blue Origin uses for the edge of space. Crossing that line is an altitude milestone; it is not the same as entering orbit. New Shepard’s trajectory is a short arc, after which the capsule falls back toward Earth.
Floating in zero gravity
Passengers are told to unbuckle after the capsule reaches the top portion of its trajectory. They can move around the cabin and look through the windows while experiencing weightlessness. The zero-gravity period is measured in minutes, not hours. Blue Origin’s public timeline says passengers return to their seats at about T+6 minutes, but it does not provide a separately guaranteed duration for free-floating time.
Parachute descent and landing
The capsule deploys parachutes at about T+8:30 minutes. Near the ground, Blue Origin says a retro-thrust system expels a burst of air to reduce touchdown speed. The capsule lands in the desert near the launch site, while the booster performs its own controlled landing as part of the reusable system.

The capsule and launch location
Six-seat pressurized cabin
Blue Origin says the crew capsule seats six people. It is pressurized and climate-controlled, so passengers do not wear spacecraft pressure suits inside the cabin during the normal flight. The company also says windows cover about one-third of the capsule’s surface area. That large window area is central to the experience: passengers can watch the curvature of Earth, the darkness of space and one another moving through the cabin.
Window placement and individual viewing angles can vary by seat. The reviewed passenger information does not specify a seat-selection policy, a guaranteed window assignment or how passengers are distributed among the six seats.

Launch Site One and Astronaut Village
Launch Site One is in West Texas near Van Horn, in the Guadalupe Mountains area. Blue Origin says passengers stay at Astronaut Village and complete preparation there before launch. The public passenger pages do not establish a complete travel itinerary, which transportation or accommodation costs are included, or how long guests should plan to remain in the area beyond the stated training period.
Training before launch
Blue Origin describes two days of on-site astronaut training. Its outline includes the mission profile, safety systems, zero-gravity procedures and mission simulations.
- Mission briefing: passengers learn the flight sequence, key timing markers and crew instructions.
- Safety-system instruction: trainers explain the capsule’s procedures and how passengers should respond to abnormal situations.
- Zero-gravity protocols: passengers practise moving safely, controlling their bodies and returning to their seats before descent.
- Mission simulations: rehearsals familiarise the crew with boarding, communications, emergency actions and the transition from launch to landing.
Blue Origin’s reviewed pages do not publish a complete medical or fitness standard, detailed age-related health rules, or a full list of disqualifying conditions. Prospective passengers should not infer that ordinary travel insurance, a general physical examination or a particular fitness level automatically satisfies the operator’s requirements.

What passengers can expect during the experience
A short, highly structured mission
The flight itself lasts about 11 minutes from liftoff to touchdown according to Blue Origin’s published timeline. Most of that time is ascent and descent. The memorable free-floating segment is brief, so passengers must make decisions quickly about when to unbuckle, move, look through the windows and return to their seats.
Views through unusually large windows
The cabin’s windows are designed to make Earth observation a primary activity. Passengers may see the thin atmosphere and the planet’s curvature, but the exact view depends on seat position, vehicle orientation, lighting and weather. Blue Origin’s own passenger page presents the experience in emotional terms. For example, it quotes Ed Dwight saying, “Everybody needs to do this,” Jesse Williams saying, “Look at our beautiful Earth!” and Karsen Kitchen saying, “I am forever changed.” These are company-published passenger testimonials, not independent evaluations.
Physical sensations
Passengers experience powered ascent, a transition into weightlessness and parachute descent in a short interval. The available passenger material does not provide independently measured g-loads, noise levels, vibration data or a medical risk estimate. Anyone with a health condition should seek professional medical advice and wait for the operator’s current eligibility requirements rather than rely on assumptions about the ride.
How to apply and what the published deposit means
Blue Origin’s passenger inquiry form says applicants must be at least 18 years old under federal regulation. The form lists a fully refundable $150,000 USD deposit to begin the order process. It says the applicant is not charged at that step and explicitly warns that submitting the form does not guarantee a seat on a future New Shepard flight.

Because New Shepard flights are paused for no less than two years from the January 30, 2026 announcement, the form should not be treated as a booking page for an available near-term flight. The deposit amount is also not evidence of the complete cost of participation.

Can you book a New Shepard flight now?
There is no established current flight date in the available material. Blue Origin announced a minimum two-year pause while it focuses on its human lunar programme. The passenger pages remain online and an inquiry form remains visible, but the form’s own wording says submission does not guarantee a future seat.
A prospective passenger should therefore distinguish three different things:
- Published experience: the company’s description of the capsule, training and 11-minute flight profile.
- Expression of interest: an inquiry and refundable deposit that begin an order process.
- Confirmed launch: a specific seat and date, which the current material does not establish.
Do not rely on an old launch announcement or an unchanged web page as proof that flights have resumed. A resumption date, queue position and seat availability would need a newer, explicit announcement.
Safety claims and how to interpret them
Blue Origin says New Shepard began carrying humans in 2021 after a flight-test programme. It describes multiple redundant safety systems in the crew capsule and says the crew escape system was successfully tested three times.
Those statements describe the operator’s systems and test history. They are not an independent assessment of passenger risk and do not make the flight risk-free. The reviewed pages do not publish an independently calculated probability of injury, a complete hazard analysis, or a full medical-screening protocol.
Passengers should ask for the current contractual and medical information before paying any amount, including:
- the latest eligibility and health criteria;
- the cancellation and refund terms for the deposit and any later payments;
- the launch-delay and weather policies;
- insurance responsibilities and exclusions;
- emergency procedures and communications arrangements;
- what happens if the programme schedule changes during the announced pause.
How New Shepard differs from orbital spaceflight
New Shepard is a suborbital ride, not an orbital mission. An orbital spacecraft must reach enough horizontal speed to continuously fall around Earth; New Shepard instead rises, provides a few minutes of weightlessness and returns. That distinction affects the duration, training demands, onboard living arrangements and the type of experience passengers receive.

Several practical details remain unspecified in the reviewed Blue Origin passenger material:
- the complete trip price beyond the $150,000 refundable deposit;
- how much travel, lodging and ground transport passengers pay;
- the exact medical and fitness screening process;
- the guaranteed duration of free-floating time;
- seat-selection rules and window access for each passenger;
- a specific date for resuming flights after the announced pause;
- an independent passenger-risk estimate.
These are not minor details for a purchase decision. They should be confirmed directly in current contractual documents if and when Blue Origin resumes accepting passengers for scheduled missions.
Bottom line for prospective passengers
The experience Blue Origin describes is a tightly choreographed, roughly 11-minute suborbital flight from West Texas. Six passengers board a pressurized capsule, cross the 100-kilometre boundary of space, unbuckle for a short period of weightlessness, then return under parachutes. Two days of on-site training at Astronaut Village cover the mission, safety systems, zero-gravity procedures and simulations.
The practical answer to “Can I book one now?” is more cautious. Blue Origin announced on January 30, 2026 that New Shepard flights would pause for no less than two years. Its inquiry form lists a refundable $150,000 deposit, but that starts an order process and does not guarantee a seat; it is not the published total trip price. Until the company announces resumed operations and a specific flight opportunity, the passenger pages describe a planned experience rather than an available scheduled journey.
