How Bloober Team’s “Japanese approach” rebuilt its reputation—and led to a Switch 2 exclusive

Bloober Team’s path to a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive began with a credibility test, not a marketing stunt. Silent Hill 2 Remake turned a Polish studio once associated with uneven horror releases into a trusted specialist. CEO Piotr Babieno then explained that Bloober’s “Japanese approach” means protecting knowledge, staff and company culture for decades rather than chasing one-off hits. Nintendo’s support and the studio’s longstanding Nintendo ties helped turn that new credibility into Onyx: The Dark Grip, a psychological-horror game designed exclusively for Switch 2 handheld play.

Silent Hill 2 Remake was the reputation turning point

Bloober’s public image changed most visibly after Konami entrusted it with Silent Hill 2 Remake. GamesRadar described the project as the catalyst for a “reputational 180”: its strong reception validated Konami’s decision and gave audiences evidence that Bloober could handle a prestigious horror property with care.

That distinction matters because a remake of a famous game carries a different risk from an original release. Players already know the characters, tone and expectations, so technical problems or misguided creative changes are immediately exposed. Bloober’s performance made it easier for publishers and platform holders to view the studio as a dependable horror partner instead of a gamble.

What Babieno means by a “Japanese approach”

Babieno is not saying Bloober is Japanese-owned or that it follows a formal Japanese corporate structure. The phrase describes how the company makes decisions. Although Bloober is publicly traded and must run a profitable business, Babieno says retaining knowledge inside the company is more important than maximizing the next quarter’s result.

Long-term company building

Bloober evaluates projects against a practical question: can the work be completed without creating a future need for mass layoffs? If staffing would have to be cut after a title ships, management considers changing the scope, pursuing a different plan or declining the project. The objective is a stable team that accumulates experience instead of repeatedly rebuilding after each game.

“For us, it was never a one-shot,” Babieno said. “It was never that we would like to create a game, and that’s it. It’s [about] the long run, and so we would like to build not just the next successful title, but a successful and very stable company.”

Why retained knowledge matters in horror

Horror depends on accumulated craft: pacing, sound design, environmental storytelling, enemy behavior and the discipline to remove ideas that weaken tension. Keeping experienced developers together lets those skills carry from one project to the next. Babieno said the company wants to build its “DNA” and team for decades, rather than treat each release as an isolated production.

He also cites Nintendo president Satoru Iwata’s warning that if a company lets go of 5% of its staff, the remaining 95% may live with fear. That idea explains why Bloober’s growth strategy emphasizes predictable continuity over rapid expansion followed by contraction.

Star Fox™ - Nintendo Switch 2
  • Blast off on a high-octane adventure to save a star system from invasion
  • Tear through space, soar across planets, and shoot loads of foes out of the sky at every step of the way
  • A cinematic take on the Star Fox 64 story, featuring fully voiced dialogue, an epic orchestral soundtrack, and a complete visual overhaul for the Nintendo Switch 2 system
  • Enter first-person mode to experience the action from inside the cockpit, and even use mouse controls to fly
  • Invite a second player* to join you as a gunner using Nintendo Switch 2 mouse controls

Why this philosophy made Nintendo’s project credible

Bloober’s Nintendo connection predates its current success. Babieno says he founded Poland’s first website devoted exclusively to Nintendo and an online store selling Nintendo consoles and games. Bloober was originally formed around making horror for Nintendo platforms, although its first Wii project, Sadness, was never completed.

That history gave the studio a genuine reason to design for Nintendo hardware rather than simply port an existing game. GamesRadar reported that Konami’s endorsement of Bloober appeared to extend into Japanese-market credibility. Nintendo has generally been cautious about third-party horror, so an exclusive required confidence in both the team and a concept built for its hardware.

Nintendo provided direct support for the project formerly known as Project M. Babieno told Nintendo Insider: “Without the support of the incredible people at Nintendo, this game would never have had a chance to exist. Their trust guided and empowered us at every step of the journey.”

Onyx: The Dark Grip explained

Onyx: The Dark Grip is a psychological-horror game developed by Bloober Team and published in-house by Broken Mirror Games. It is exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2 and built entirely for handheld mode, rather than being a conventional console game with optional touch support.

Donkey Kong Bananza (Nintendo Switch 2)
  • Explore a vast underground world—by smashing your way through it!
  • A brand-new 3D platforming action adventure starring Donkey Kong and Pauline
  • Bash through just about anything in groundbreaking exploration! Crash through walls and carve tunnels—the more you smash, the more areas open up to you
  • Pair up with Pauline to use Bananza Transformations: smash through obstacles with the raw strength of Kong form, gallop with incredible speed as a Zebra, and more
  • Team up with a friend in two-player co-op as Donkey Kong and Pauline! Blast foes and terrain alike with Pauline’s voice as you explore together

How the handheld design works

  • The player uses the Switch 2 touch screen to unlock doors.
  • Touch controls allow the player to read non-player characters’ minds.
  • Objects can be moved directly through the screen.
  • The player guides a supernatural entity that manipulates a lone traveler.

Nintendo summarizes the premise as “Survive as a vessel and interfere as a god.” A traveler reaches a desolate ghost town; the player manipulates the environment, solves puzzles and confronts creatures while trying to stop the puppet from descending into madness. Babieno has said fans of Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Limbo and Eternal Darkness should recognize the project’s influences.

The exact release date and price had not been published in the available announcements as of October 17, 2026. Treat any retailer listing or social-media estimate as provisional until Nintendo or Bloober confirms it.

Cronos: The New Dawn showed the bridge from theory to shipping product

Before Onyx, Bloober demonstrated its ability to carry an original idea through a major release with Cronos: The New Dawn. SEGA’s official release lists September 5, 2025 as the launch date for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.

The third-person survival-horror game alternates between a ruined future and 1980s Poland. Its defining threat is that enemies can merge with nearby corpses unless the player burns them, turning corpse management into a constant resource decision rather than a simple combat cleanup.

Pokémon Pokopia - Nintendo Switch 2
  • Shape the world and build a cozy new life with Pokémon as a Ditto transformed to look like a human.
  • Use other Pokémon’s moves, like Bulbasaur’s Leafage, to revitalize and navigate the world around you.
  • Meet and befriend more Pokémon as you help nature flourish.
  • Gather materials to create items and furniture, till the fields to grow delicious crops, build homes for the Pokémon you meet, and more—there’s so much to do!
  • Experience a world with varied weather, real-time days and nights, and other surprises.

Bloober’s investor announcement said SEGA would manage boxed and digital distribution for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 in Japan and South Korea under a three-year partnership beginning at launch. The announcement identified those markets as important because of strong gaming culture and collector demand for high-quality physical editions. That regional execution complements, rather than replaces, Bloober’s global digital releases.

What the partnership says about Bloober now

The sequence is the important point: Silent Hill 2 Remake supplied public proof of quality; Bloober’s staffing and knowledge-retention policy supplied a reason to believe that quality could last; and its Nintendo history made a hardware-specific horror concept believable. Nintendo’s backing then gave Onyx room to be designed around a single device instead of diluted across platforms.

That does not guarantee that Onyx will succeed, and no confirmed release date or price was available by October 17, 2026. It does show why the Switch 2 deal is more than a platform surprise: it is the commercial result of Bloober rebuilding trust, preserving the people who make its games and aligning a long-term business model with a partner willing to support an unconventional horror design.
