How Bitcoin’s Price Moves: Market Cycles, Liquidity, and Volatility

Bitcoin’s price rises or falls when buyers and sellers change the prices they are willing to accept. Their decisions respond to expectations, news, demand, broader market conditions and leveraged positions. Liquidity affects how much trading moves the price; volatility describes how much the price fluctuates. These forces interact, so no single headline, indicator or historical cycle explains every move.

Why does Bitcoin’s price go up and down?

A market price is the point at which buyers and sellers are willing to trade. When buyers are more willing to pay higher prices than sellers are willing to accept, trades can push the price up. When sellers accept lower bids or buyers step back, trades can push it down. The price changes as expectations and willingness to trade change—not because Bitcoin has a fixed, continuously updated value.

Those expectations can shift for several reasons at once. The Bank for International Settlements (BIS), in its 2026 Annual Economic Report, describes crypto volatility as driven primarily by speculative demand and notes that negative news, including major exchange failures, can exert downward pressure. Its account supports a multi-factor explanation, not a rule that any one event or indicator predicts Bitcoin’s next move.

The BIS also wrote that crypto volatility “does not reflect an expansion in their use as a payment network but rather a sharp influx of speculative funds driven by expectations of price increases.” That statement concerns crypto markets broadly; it should not be read as a claim that every Bitcoin price movement has the same cause.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

What makes Bitcoin so volatile?

Volatility is the size or variability of price changes over a period. It is a description of how prices behaved, not an explanation of why they moved. Bitcoin can react sharply when expectations change or when a relatively small set of trades meets limited available liquidity. Speculative demand and negative news are among the factors the BIS identifies, while broader market conditions can also matter.

Risk appetite is part of that context, but it is not a dependable one-variable explanation. Federal Reserve Vice Chair Lael Brainard’s July 8, 2022 speech discussed Bitcoin’s sharp decline and correlation with riskier equities during the market conditions of that period. That is a dated observation, not evidence that Bitcoin always moves in step with stocks.

Leverage can magnify a move. A trader who borrows or uses a leveraged product has exposure larger than the capital they put down. If the price moves against the position, the trader may have to add funds or close it. When positions are forcibly closed, the resulting trades can add to buying or selling pressure. The direction and size of any such effect depend on the positions and market conditions; leverage does not make every price change self-reinforcing.

A dated example of leveraged selling

In its March 2026 Quarterly Review, the BIS reported that Bitcoin slumped by about 50% from its 2025 highs and touched 2024 levels during the period from late November 2025 to early March 2026, following a drop in technology stocks. The BIS said liquidations of leveraged long positions probably exacerbated the decline. This is a qualified explanation of that particular episode, not a typical drawdown estimate or a forecast of future declines.

How do liquidity and trading volume affect Bitcoin’s price?

Liquidity is the ability to trade without materially moving the price. Trading volume is the amount traded over a period. They are related, but they are not interchangeable: high volume alone does not show how much trading the market could absorb without a substantial price change. Liquidity can also differ by venue, instrument and market conditions.

In practical terms, a large order can move the price more when there are fewer willing counterparties near the current price. When more buyers and sellers are available at nearby prices, a similar order may have less effect. This helps explain why the same amount of trading activity need not produce the same price response at different times or on different venues.

A peer-reviewed May 2024 study, “On the robust drivers of cryptocurrency liquidity: the case of Bitcoin,” found realized volatility to be the sole relevant variable in its robustness analysis of candidate liquidity drivers. That is a study-specific association, not proof that volatility causes liquidity to change in every setting or a universal rule for Bitcoin markets.

To interpret a price move, consider the price change alongside trading activity, current market conditions, relevant news and evidence about positioning. No single metric or universal liquidity threshold is established here as a reliable signal that a Bitcoin venue is about to become illiquid.

Do Bitcoin market cycles repeat?

“Market cycle” is a way to describe a sequence of price advances, peaks, declines and recoveries. It can help people organize a chart’s history, but a label is not evidence that a cycle follows a fixed schedule or that its next phase can be predicted.

The available evidence does not establish a complete chronology of Bitcoin cycles, a dependable cycle duration or a reliable rule for forecasting future returns. The BIS’s discussion of speculative flows and negative news helps explain possible sources of price swings; it does not establish a repeatable cycle mechanism. A past chart shape or a halving date alone is not enough to infer what price will do next.

What can Bitcoin’s price tell you—and what can’t it?

A price chart shows executed market prices over time. It does not by itself reveal every investor’s position, the full depth of trading across venues, or why a particular order was placed. Public blockchain data also cannot provide a complete picture of off-chain trading and investor positions. The BIS’s 2025 paper on crypto and decentralized finance (DeFi) describes information asymmetries and market inefficiencies in those markets; that broader observation is relevant context, not a Bitcoin-only measurement.

When comparing two price episodes, keep the dates and evidence distinct. A useful comparison asks how large and long each move was, what trading activity and liquidity measures show, what news or macroeconomic conditions coincided with it, and whether there is evidence of leveraged positioning or liquidations. It should also distinguish a directly observed price move from an official interpretation of its cause or a study-specific statistical association.

Can Bitcoin market swings affect the wider financial system?

The New York Fed’s November 2024 review identified valuation pressures, funding risk, widespread leverage and interconnectedness as vulnerabilities in the digital-asset ecosystem. It said those vulnerabilities had so far made a limited contribution to systemic risk at that time, citing the ecosystem’s relatively small size and limited links to traditional finance. That is a dated assessment, not a guarantee about present or future conditions.

Brainard’s July 2022 speech also described familiar risks in crypto finance, including leverage, settlement, opacity and liquidity transformation. These observations help explain why regulators and financial institutions consider more than price volatility alone when assessing risk; they should be understood in the context of the period in which she spoke.
