How Bitcoin’s Price Affects the Value of a Company’s Bitcoin Holdings

A company’s gross Bitcoin holdings value is the number of BTC it owns multiplied by the BTC price used for the valuation. If its BTC quantity stays fixed, a 10% price rise increases that asset value by 10%; a 10% fall reduces it by 10%. That arithmetic does not mean the company’s shares or total equity value must move by the same percentage. Liabilities, accounting rules, business results, financing, and how freely the BTC can be used all matter too.

How do you calculate the value of a company’s Bitcoin holdings?

Use a BTC quantity and a BTC price that apply to the same valuation date. The basic calculation is:

Gross Bitcoin holdings value = BTC held × price per BTC

For example, 1,000 BTC valued at $60,000 per BTC have a gross value of $60 million. If the quantity remains 1,000 BTC and the valuation price rises 10% to $66,000, the gross value becomes $66 million. The price-driven change is $6 million, or 10%. If the price instead falls 10% to $54,000, the gross value becomes $54 million.

This is a mark-to-market calculation of an asset, not a calculation of cash on hand. A company would generally have to sell BTC, borrow against it, or otherwise use it to turn that marked value into funds available for spending. A quoted price also does not guarantee that a large position could be sold at that exact price without affecting execution.

Why might the holdings value change by more or less than Bitcoin’s price?

The simple percentage relationship holds only when the BTC quantity stays the same and the same valuation approach is used. Companies can change their holdings by buying, selling, mining, lending, or engaging in other treasury activity. Their BTC balance is therefore a separate variable from Bitcoin’s market price.

To understand a reported change, compare both the number of BTC and the price per BTC on each date. A rising total value could reflect a higher price, more BTC, or both. A falling total could reflect a lower price, fewer BTC, or a combination. Comparing a company’s current quantity with an earlier price—or comparing values measured on different dates—can produce a misleading explanation.

Even when the BTC quantity and its marked value are clear, the holdings are only one part of a company’s financial position. The effect on equity depends on the company’s liabilities, financing arrangements, share issuance or other dilution, operating business, liquidity needs, and market expectations. The asset calculation alone cannot establish a company’s total equity value or predict its share price.

What do dated company examples show?

The figures below come from company filings and are snapshots for specific dates, not current market quotes. They illustrate how quantity and unit price combine; they should not be read as a live comparison of companies or as a forecast.

Company disclosure BTC quantity and valuation date Price or stated value What the figures illustrate
Strategy Inc., 2026 filing Approximately 717,131 BTC as of February 13, 2026 Reported Coinbase BTC market price: $68,734 per BTC. The filing also reported an aggregate purchase price of $54.5 billion and an average purchase price of approximately $76,027 per BTC. Multiplying the approximate quantity by the cited market price gives an indicative gross value of about $49.29 billion. That is a calculation from approximate holdings and a dated price, not a current valuation or a statement of cash proceeds. The reported aggregate purchase price is a cost figure, not the same measure as market value.
Strategy Inc., 2026 quarterly filing Approximately 818,334 BTC as of April 26, 2026 $78,258 per BTC; stated value of $64.04 billion The quantity multiplied by the dated unit price produces the reported approximate total. The example demonstrates the basic calculation, not a value that applies on another date.
SEC registrant filing 12,205 BTC as of June 30, 2026 Fair value of $58,524 per BTC; total fair value of $714.293 million The filing also compared this with 10,428 BTC at $114,068 per BTC as of September 30, 2025. Multiplying those earlier figures gives about $1.190 billion. The later total is lower even though the BTC quantity is higher, illustrating how a substantial change in unit price can outweigh a change in units. These snapshots alone do not explain every factor behind the company’s treasury movements.

Each figure answers a different question. A market or fair value estimates what the position is worth at a selected price and time. Aggregate purchase price and average purchase price describe acquisition cost on the terms reported by the company. Comparing market value with cost can provide context about a position, but it does not by itself tell you when the company bought each unit, whether it has sold other units, or how a particular accounting period’s earnings were affected.

How do accounting rules affect reported gains and losses?

Market value and accounting profit are related, but the accounting treatment and reporting period determine where and when price changes appear in financial statements. Under FASB ASU 2023-08, qualifying crypto assets are measured at fair value, with period-to-period changes recognized in net income. Strategy Inc. disclosed that it adopted the standard on January 1, 2025, and reported that adoption affected its financial results and carrying value. It also said Bitcoin’s volatility increased earnings volatility under the fair-value approach.

This date matters when comparing periods. A company’s statements from before it adopted the standard may present Bitcoin differently from its later statements. Do not assume that two reported earnings figures are directly comparable without checking the issuer’s accounting policy, adoption date, and reporting period. Nor should a fair-value gain in net income be mistaken for cash generated by operations: it reflects a change in the measured value of the asset.

Valuation timing and price selection also matter. Bitcoin trades continuously rather than having one universally applicable exchange closing time. One SEC registrant said it used a BTC-USD spot price of $59,007.48 at 23:59:59 UTC on June 30, 2026, from its identified principal market, and classified that observable quoted price as Level 1. That is an example of one issuer’s disclosed method—not a universal closing-price rule for all companies, markets, or jurisdictions. When reading a filing, check the stated date, time, market, and valuation policy.

Does a 10% rise in Bitcoin make the company worth 10% more?

No such conclusion follows from the holdings calculation alone. With a fixed BTC quantity, a 10% rise increases the gross marked value of the BTC asset by 10%. It does not establish a 10% increase in the company’s share price, market capitalization, or total equity value.

A company has assets and obligations beyond its BTC. Debt and other liabilities affect the residual value available to shareholders; new shares can dilute existing ownership; and the operating business may gain or lose value for reasons unrelated to Bitcoin. Investors may also anticipate purchases, sales, financing needs, or other risks before those events appear in reported holdings. The reviewed filings do not support a one-for-one rule between BTC price movements and company stock-price movements.

For the same reason, a BTC price decline does not mechanically translate into an identical percentage decline in the company’s entire equity value. The BTC asset is one input. The company’s balance sheet, capital structure, business performance, and market expectations shape how that input is reflected in the broader valuation.

Can the company use all of its reported Bitcoin?

A headline BTC balance does not necessarily mean every unit is immediately available to sell or use. Bitcoin may be pledged as collateral, lent, held in custody, or affected by derivatives and settlement terms. Those arrangements can constrain liquidity or change economic exposure even if the disclosed quantity is unchanged.

When a company borrows against BTC, for example, a price decline may matter not only because the marked asset value falls but also because collateral terms or financing needs could become more demanding. The precise consequences depend on the company’s agreements and disclosures; do not infer that all holdings are unencumbered simply from a headline quantity. Check the filing for pledged or restricted assets, lending activity, derivative positions, and relevant financing terms.

What risks should readers include in the picture?

Bitcoin does not generate cash flows in the way an operating asset may produce revenue, interest, or rent. A company holding it may face costs and risks that are not captured by multiplying BTC units by a spot price.

  • Market risk: the price can move sharply, changing reported asset value and potentially increasing earnings volatility under fair-value accounting.
  • Liquidity risk: a quoted market price does not guarantee that a large position can be converted into cash immediately at that price, particularly if holdings are restricted or markets are stressed.
  • Custody and cybersecurity risk: safeguarding digital assets entails operational and security concerns, alongside custody costs.
  • Counterparty risk: lending, custody, financing, or settlement arrangements can expose a company to risks involving other parties.
  • Financing and collateral risk: borrowing or pledging BTC can connect a price decline to liquidity requirements or other contractual consequences.

These risks do not change the basic multiplication, but they help explain why a gross holding value is not a complete picture of economic benefit, accessibility, or financial resilience.

How to compare companies’ Bitcoin holdings

Use the same questions for each issuer, and rely on its filings for the details rather than comparing headline totals in isolation:

  1. What quantity is reported, and as of what date? Check the BTC count and whether the number is approximate. A later balance may reflect purchases, sales, mining, lending, or other treasury activity.
  2. What price and valuation date were used? Note the market or principal market, the timestamp if disclosed, and whether the value is a spot price or another stated measure.
  3. Are you comparing cost with fair value? Keep aggregate purchase price, average cost, carrying amount, and period-end fair value distinct. They answer different questions.
  4. What accounting policy applies to the period? Check the framework, relevant accounting standard, adoption date, and any change in presentation before comparing reported earnings or carrying values across years or issuers.
  5. Are holdings pledged, loaned, or restricted? Determine whether some BTC is less readily available than the headline balance suggests.
  6. What financing, derivatives, and liquidity arrangements matter? Read disclosures for borrowing, collateral, derivative exposure, settlement terms, and cash needs that may affect the company’s economic exposure.

Strategy Inc. described its own position in its Form 10-K by saying, “We view our bitcoin holdings as long-term holdings and expect to continue to accumulate bitcoin.” That statement expresses the company’s stated approach; it is not an independent assessment of the value or risk of its holdings.
