Bitcoin mining revenue in BTC is the block subsidy plus the transaction fees included in the block. To report that gross revenue in US dollars, multiply the BTC total by a BTC/USD price chosen for the same block or measurement period: gross revenue (USD) = [subsidy (BTC) + fees (BTC)] × BTC price (USD/BTC). The result is revenue before operating costs, not profit.
The Bitcoin mining revenue formula
For one block, let S be its subsidy in BTC, F the total fees in that block in BTC, and P the chosen BTC/USD price in dollars per bitcoin. Then:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Gross block revenue in BTC = S + F
Gross block revenue in USD = (S + F) × P
The subsidy and fees are the two sources of BTC proceeds in a block’s coinbase transaction. The BTC price is not a third payment to the miner; it is only the conversion factor used to express the BTC proceeds in dollars. CoreCharts’ methodology page, updated June 21, 2026, describes this USD revenue calculation and treats it as gross revenue before operating costs.

What makes up the BTC proceeds?
Block subsidy: protocol-issued bitcoin
The subsidy is the new bitcoin issuance component of the block reward. It is set by Bitcoin’s protocol schedule and is separate from the fees users attach to transactions. The block’s coinbase transaction is where the miner claims the block proceeds, including the subsidy and fees.
The subsidy applicable to a particular block depends on its height and place in the protocol schedule. A current amount should therefore be tied to the relevant block height or period and checked against current protocol or block data. The Bitcoin Developer Guide explains the subsidy and coinbase concepts; the information available here does not establish an amount for a particular current block, so no current subsidy figure is assumed.
Transaction fees: value left between inputs and outputs
A transaction fee is the difference between the total value of a transaction’s inputs and the total value of its outputs. The miner that includes that transaction can claim the difference. For a block, total fee revenue is the sum of the fees from all transactions included in it.

Fees reflect demand for limited block space and the transactions selected for inclusion. A fee rate is not the same as fee revenue: the fee rate expresses a price per unit of transaction size, while total fees measure the BTC accumulated across transactions in a block or period. A high fee rate on one transaction does not, by itself, tell you the block’s total fees.
BTC/USD price: a conversion, not a reward
Price changes the reported dollar value without changing how much BTC the block pays. If the subsidy and fees add up to the same BTC total in two comparisons, a different selected BTC/USD price will still produce different USD revenue. By contrast, a change in the fee total changes the BTC proceeds themselves.
Keep the BTC subtotal visible alongside any dollar figure. That makes it possible to tell whether a reported change came from mining proceeds, the exchange-rate conversion, or both.

How to calculate revenue for a block or a day
- Define the interval. Decide whether the figure represents one block, a calendar day, or another stated period. Use the same interval when collecting its subsidy and fees.
- Record subsidy in BTC. Use the subsidy that applies to each block in the interval. For a multi-block period, sum the applicable block subsidies rather than assuming one block’s amount represents the whole period.
- Record included fees in BTC. Add the fees from transactions included in each block in the interval. Do not substitute a fee rate, an average transaction fee, or an estimate of fees offered by transactions that were not included.
- Calculate gross proceeds in BTC. Add the subsidy total and fee total. Keep the two components separate in your notes so their contributions can be compared.
- Choose and state a price convention. Use a price tied to the defined interval: for example, an identified daily average for daily totals or a timestamped spot observation for a block calculation. A volatile BTC price should be identified by source and time or averaging window.
- Convert to USD. Multiply the BTC proceeds by the selected USD-per-BTC price. Label the result as gross revenue and retain the BTC amount and price convention with it.
For a period containing several blocks, the calculation is (sum of subsidies + sum of included fees) × selected period price. The chosen price method is a reporting convention; it does not alter the BTC earned. Different reasonable conventions can yield different dollar totals, so comparisons are useful only when the price rule and period are clear.
Worked example with illustrative values
The following numbers are purely illustrative; they are not a statement of the current Bitcoin subsidy, current fees, or current BTC price. Suppose a block has a hypothetical subsidy of 3.0 BTC and included fees of 0.2 BTC. Its gross payout is 3.2 BTC. If the stated price for that block’s measurement time were hypothetically $50,000 per BTC, the calculation would be 3.2 × $50,000 = $160,000 gross revenue.
The example separates the calculation into three checks:

For an actual figure, replace each illustrative input with block or period data and identify the BTC/USD price source and timestamp or averaging window. No live BTC quote is supplied here, so a current dollar estimate cannot be calculated reliably from these inputs.
Gross revenue is not miner profit
The formula measures gross proceeds, before the expenses and other financial obligations of operating a mining business. It does not subtract electricity, hosting or facility charges, ASIC purchase costs or depreciation, pool fees, financing, taxes, or other costs. A gross revenue figure alone cannot establish whether a miner is profitable.

Network revenue, block proceeds, and an individual miner’s payout
A block’s proceeds are not automatically the amount received by every person contributing mining work. A solo miner who successfully finds a block claims its proceeds, but the timing of that payout is uncertain: the miner must find a block to receive one, so income can be highly variable. The Bitcoin Developer Guide also describes mining pools, which combine contributors’ work and distribute proceeds according to a payout method, generally based on shares or contributed work.
For a pool participant, the network’s block revenue is therefore not a personal payout figure. The participant’s amount depends on the pool’s distribution method and their contribution, along with any applicable pool charges. To assess what an individual earned, use the participant’s actual pool payout records rather than assigning the full block reward to each contributor.
ASICs perform the header-hashing work used in Bitcoin mining, but hardware details are not needed to understand the revenue formula. They become relevant when estimating costs or evaluating an operator’s economics, neither of which can be derived from block revenue alone.

Quick Recap
How to compare two mining revenue figures fairly
| Comparison point | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Native BTC and USD | Compare BTC proceeds separately from the BTC/USD price used for conversion. | USD revenue can move because the price changed even when BTC proceeds did not. |
| Subsidy and fees | Show protocol subsidy and included transaction fees as separate BTC amounts before adding them. | This distinguishes issuance from user-paid fees and reveals which component changed. |
| Time period | Match block or day totals to the same stated reporting interval. | Mixing periods can make both BTC totals and converted values inconsistent. |
| Price method | State the price source and timestamp or averaging window. | Different price observations can produce different USD totals for the same BTC proceeds. |
| Gross or net | Identify whether costs have been subtracted and which ones. | The block formula alone gives gross revenue, not profit. |
| Network or participant | Distinguish a block’s proceeds from a pool distribution or an individual solo miner’s receipt. | Pool payout rules and solo-mining variance affect what a participant receives and when. |
Common calculation mistakes
- Calling the BTC/USD price a reward component. It changes the dollar expression of the proceeds, not the protocol payment in BTC.
- Using a fee rate as total block fees. Fee rate is a per-size measure; total block fees are the sum of the included transactions’ fees.
- Pairing totals and prices from mismatched periods. A daily BTC total needs a clearly stated daily price convention, while a single-block figure should use a price tied to its chosen measurement time.
- Reporting gross revenue as profit. Expenses must be supplied and subtracted separately to estimate net economics.
- Assigning a whole block’s payout to every pool contributor. Pools distribute proceeds under their payout rules; use participant payout data for individual earnings.
- Presenting an undated dollar figure as current. BTC price is volatile. A useful USD estimate identifies its price observation or averaging interval.
