How Bitcoin Capital Gains Taxes Work and What Records to Keep (U.S.)

For U.S. federal tax purposes, Bitcoin is treated as property. When you sell, exchange, or otherwise dispose of Bitcoin held as a capital asset, calculate gain or loss in U.S. dollars by subtracting its adjusted basis from the amount realized. Keep records that support the acquisition, value, fees, holding period, and Bitcoin units involved; a Form 1099-DA may not provide your basis.

What Bitcoin transactions can create capital gain or loss?

Buying Bitcoin with real currency and simply holding it generally does not, by itself, trigger a taxable disposition. A sale for dollars, an exchange for another digital asset, or spending Bitcoin can be a disposition. A transfer between wallets or accounts you control is not automatically a sale, though a digital-asset fee paid to make a transfer can itself have tax consequences. The IRS explains the treatment in its digital-asset transaction FAQs and on its Digital assets page.

This article covers U.S. federal income tax treatment for an individual holding Bitcoin as a capital asset. Mining or other receipt of Bitcoin can involve ordinary income and a basis calculation separate from a later capital gain or loss. State and local rules, business activity, gifts, estates, trusts, and individual circumstances may require separate analysis.

How do you calculate gain or loss on Bitcoin?

For a disposition, the basic calculation is amount realized minus adjusted basis. The result is a gain if positive and a loss if negative. Report amounts in U.S. dollars. Basis generally begins with the Bitcoin’s cost in U.S. dollars, but how it is calculated can depend on how the Bitcoin was acquired, fees, whether its value was previously included in income, and other facts.

Amount realized and transaction costs

For a sale for dollars, amount realized is generally the cash received, adjusted for eligible costs to effect the disposition. If you receive services rather than cash, use their fair market value as part of the amount realized. IRS FAQ 52 describes this calculation; FAQ 53 says transaction costs may include commissions, transfer taxes, and transaction or “gas” fees paid for services to effect a purchase, sale, or disposition.

Do not treat every fee or wallet movement alike. Under the IRS FAQ, fees for transferring Bitcoin between your own wallets or accounts are not digital-asset transaction costs. If you pay a transaction-service fee using digital assets, that payment is itself a disposition and may produce gain or loss.

How does the Bitcoin holding period affect the result?

A Bitcoin capital asset held for one year or less before disposition produces a short-term gain or loss; holding it for more than one year produces a long-term gain or loss. The holding period begins the day after acquisition and ends on the disposition date. Tax rates depend on your overall circumstances and current law, so the holding-period label alone does not determine your tax bill. See the IRS FAQs on digital-asset transactions.

How do you identify which Bitcoin units you disposed of?

If you acquired units at different times or prices, the units assigned to a disposition affect basis and holding period. Specific identification is not simply selecting a favorable lot after the transaction. The IRS requirements depend on whether the units are held with a custodial broker or in an unhosted wallet, the transaction date, and whether the required identification and records are in place.

Specific identification

For units held with a custodial broker, identify the particular units to the broker no later than the date and time of disposition, using the broker’s designated identifiers sufficient to establish basis and holding period, and retain supporting records. The IRS FAQs describe temporary relief for 2025 transactions under Notice 2025-7. For transactions after Dec. 31, 2025, the instruction generally needs to be in place with the broker by the time of the transaction. Check the current FAQ and the broker’s procedures for the transaction year.

Default identification rules

If valid identification is not made, default rules may apply. For an unhosted wallet, IRS FAQ 86 describes using the earliest-acquired units of the same asset in that wallet, regardless of when units were transferred into it. Related FAQs 87 and 92 address custodial wallets and brokers. This is not a universal rule to use the oldest Bitcoin across every wallet: custody, wallet or account, and transaction date matter.

Transition allocation for existing holdings

Revenue Procedure 2024-28 provides an eligible taxpayer a transition safe harbor to allocate unused basis to digital-asset units held in each wallet or account as of Jan. 1, 2025. It does not apply to assets acquired or transferred to the taxpayer on or after that date, and its requirements and deadlines apply. It is transition guidance, not a general rule for moving basis among wallets. Read the full Revenue Procedure 2024-28 before relying on it.

What records should you keep for Bitcoin taxes?

The IRS requires records sufficient to establish the positions on your federal tax return. For a Bitcoin capital gain or loss, keep records that show:

  • The number of Bitcoin units acquired or disposed of.
  • The fair market value in U.S. dollars and how it was determined.
  • The basis of the units and any adjustments used in the calculation.
  • The amount realized and fees associated with the purchase or disposition.
  • Which units you identified, when you identified them, and the records supporting their basis and holding period.

Retain exchange statements, wallet and account histories, transfer details, fee information, and the records behind any lot identification. Keep a clear record of transfers between accounts you control so you can reconcile holdings without misclassifying a transfer as a sale. The IRS lists the core transaction details on its Digital assets page and in its FAQs.

What does Form 1099-DA tell you—and what does it not?

Form 1099-DA does not eliminate the need for your own basis records. The IRS says brokers’ gross-proceeds reporting applies to covered digital-asset transactions on or after Jan. 1, 2025; basis reporting applies to certain covered transactions on or after Jan. 1, 2026. Most 2025 statements will not include basis, so taxpayers need to calculate it. These rules cover brokers generally taking possession of the assets; decentralized or non-custodial brokers that do not take possession are not covered by these final regulations.

In Tax Tip 2026-07, dated Jan. 28, 2026, the IRS said brokers must furnish taxpayers the information reported on Form 1099-DA by Feb. 17, 2026, for the applicable 2025 reporting cycle. Compare any statement with your own transaction history; it may not capture the basis information needed to determine gain or loss. See the IRS reminder for taxpayers about digital assets.

Where do Bitcoin capital transactions go on your tax return?

For individual capital transactions, the IRS generally directs taxpayers to report them on Form 8949 and summarize capital gains and deductible losses on Form 1040, Schedule D. There are exceptions involving broker statements with proceeds and basis under applicable rules. A taxable transaction still must be reported even if you do not receive Form 1099-DA or another information return. Check the current forms and instructions for the filing year.

  1. Reconcile activity: Gather statements and histories from every relevant exchange, wallet, and account; match transfers between accounts you control.
  2. Calculate each disposition: Determine the amount realized, adjusted basis, eligible transaction costs, and holding period in U.S. dollars.
  3. Apply the correct unit-identification rule: Use specific identification only when its timing, broker procedure, and documentation requirements are met; otherwise determine the applicable default rule.
  4. Report and retain support: Complete Form 8949 and Schedule D as applicable, and keep the underlying records that substantiate your return.

Tax software can help reconcile transactions, but it does not replace source records or tax review. Complex histories, missing records, income events, or uncertainty about identification rules may warrant advice from a qualified tax professional.
