Ben Simmons could give Sacramento a tall secondary playmaker who pushes the ball in transition and helps organize possessions when rookie Darius Acuff Jr. is not initiating. But that is a possible use, not a confirmed role: NBA.com’s 2026–27 preview says Acuff is poised to take control of the offense and leaves Simmons’s ultimate role open.
What is confirmed about Simmons and the Kings?
Simmons has not played for Sacramento yet. He missed the entire 2025–26 season and last appeared in 2024–25, splitting that season between Brooklyn and the LA Clippers. Across 51 appearances in 2024–25, he averaged 5.0 points, 5.6 assists and 4.7 rebounds in 22.0 minutes per game. Those are his past numbers, not a projection of what he will produce for the Kings.

NBA.com reported on September 8, 2026, that Sacramento agreed to a one-year, $3.5 million deal with Simmons and officially announced the signing. The report says he met with coach Doug Christie, but does not assign him a specific offensive job. Read NBA.com’s signing report.
The team context makes the distinction important. Sacramento went 22–60 in 2025–26 and ranked 26th in offense with a 110.6 rating; Simmons did not play that season, so those results say nothing about his effect on the Kings. The 2026–27 preview describes Acuff, the seventh overall pick, as poised to lead the offense. Acuff averaged 23.5 points and 6.4 assists and shot 44% from three in his freshman season at Arkansas, but those are college figures, not an NBA forecast. The preview also says Christie must integrate returning players and new additions, with the team’s success depending on how quickly the mix finds an identity. See NBA.com’s Kings season preview.

How could a point-forward role change Sacramento’s offense?
“Point forward” describes a player who initiates or directs possessions from a forward-sized role. It does not automatically mean starting point guard, primary ball-handler, or closer. For Sacramento, the most plausible version is shared initiation: Acuff handles some first actions while Simmons advances the ball, reads the defense, or creates for teammates.
More ways to start a possession
After a defensive rebound, Simmons could push the ball before the opposing defense is set. In half-court situations, he could take a secondary handling role while Acuff draws the first pressure. That gives the offense another route into its actions, but it only matters if the passing leads to rim pressure, open shots, or another concrete advantage—not merely safe ball movement.

A possible bridge when Acuff sits
If the coaches stagger their minutes or use Simmons with a second unit, his passing could help keep those lineups organized. The sources do not confirm that rotation plan. Whether it works would depend on the teammates around him and on his availability and minutes after missing the previous season.

Transition and half-court play are different tests
Simmons initiating in open court could help Sacramento attack earlier, even if the same lineup does not reliably create a scoring edge against a set defense. Those outcomes should be judged separately once the Kings have played together; there is not yet Sacramento game evidence to establish either one.

What could the Kings gain—and what could they give up?
The central trade-off is between adding size and passing to the offense and preserving enough spacing to make those skills useful. The available sources do not establish Simmons’s current shooting level or show how proposed Sacramento lineups will space the floor, so the net effect cannot be assumed in advance.
- Initiation: Track who brings the ball up, starts the first action, and handles late-clock possessions: Acuff, Simmons, or another guard.
- Spacing: Note how many credible shooters share the floor and whether defenders leave Simmons to help elsewhere.
- Advantage creation: Look for passes that produce shots at the rim or open looks, rather than counting assists or completed passes alone.
- Transition: Watch whether Simmons pushing after rebounds leads to earlier attacks before the defense is organized.
- Pressure and turnovers: See whether opponents disrupt his passing windows or slow Sacramento before it can get into an action.
- Fit with the returning core: Evaluate combinations with players such as Zach LaVine, Keegan Murray, and Domantas Sabonis; NBA.com’s preview flags Sabonis’s health as important.
- Role reliability: Judge the role alongside actual availability and minutes, rather than assuming either from the signing.
Preseason and early rotations can help reveal how Sacramento intends to deploy Simmons, but small samples are not proof of a lasting effect. A sound assessment should pair lineup minutes with possession-level film or statistics and distinguish brief stretches from sustained results.

Will Ben Simmons play point forward for the Kings?
It is a plausible role to test, not a confirmed assignment. The available preview identifies Acuff as the expected offensive leader and says Simmons’s ultimate role remains an open question. His 2024–25 line supports describing him as a passer, while his absence in 2025–26 leaves his readiness and Sacramento impact unestablished. The clearest early evidence will be who initiates in different lineups and whether Simmons’s passing creates real advantages without weakening the spacing around him.
