The announced changes are significant, though: the whip is also a traversal tool, movement is designed to be faster, and equipment and boss-derived abilities add new ways to shape combat.
As of October 13, 2026, the game is scheduled to release on October 15. Those descriptions establish the developers’ intentions, not the finished game’s quality, balance or reception. Here is what the announced comparison does—and does not—show.

Is Belmont’s Curse a sequel to Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse?
Yes. KONAMI describes Belmont’s Curse as an official-canon continuation of Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse, set 23 years after that game. Its protagonist, Rose Belmont, is identified as Trevor Belmont’s daughter. This makes the connection more specific than a shared name or an allusion: the new story follows the next generation of the Belmont family in the established series timeline. KONAMI’s June 8, 2026 announcement gives the interval and family relationship; the official game page describes the game and its setting.

The announced premise moves the story forward to a new protagonist and a new setting: Paris in 1499. The predecessor is therefore the story’s foundation, while Rose’s adventure is a new chapter. The available announcements do not establish how much of the earlier game’s plot a player must remember, or how extensively its events will be revisited.

For a reader comparing eras of the series, this is the most concrete distinction to start with. Belmont’s Curse is being positioned as a continuation that carries forward a family legacy, not as a remake whose purpose is to reproduce an older adventure.
What does it keep from the older Castlevania games?
The Vampire Killer remains central
The whip is still Rose’s signature weapon and a core part of the game’s identity. In an interview with Xbox Wire, KONAMI producer Tsutomu Taniguchi said, “The whip remains true to Castlevania’s identity, but we wanted to give it a new dimension.” He and Evil Empire creative director Emmanuel Nouaille describe the Vampire Killer as one of the foundations the team agreed to preserve alongside the 2D action-exploration format and the game’s place in official canon. The interview presents these as the developers’ design pillars, not as a universal definition of what every Castlevania game must be.
Action, exploration and gothic horror
KONAMI calls the game a 2D action-exploration title. Its announced setting—1499 Paris, including catacombs and Dracula’s castle—keeps it within the series’ gothic-horror territory while giving this story a distinct location. The publisher also names familiar figures and threats such as Death, Medusa and Carmilla, alongside new material. These are recognizable series cues, but the setting and Rose’s role mean the game is not simply presented as a return to an earlier cast or place. Continuity without a claim that everything is unchanged
The developers’ stated aim is to modernize while preserving the series’ identity. Taniguchi said the controls, gameplay and overall feel needed to meet players’ expectations, while Nouaille described first agreeing on the core pillars before building a new game. Their comments explain the intended balance: recognizable foundations, with room for new systems. They do not establish that the finished game will feel identical to any one predecessor, or that every long-time player will agree on what counts as authentic Castlevania.
What is new about the whip?
In Belmont’s Curse, the whip is announced as both a weapon and a way to move through the environment. Rose can use it to swing through spaces; KONAMI and the developers describe this as a way to make movement more fluid and the pace more energetic. The studio also characterizes exploration as more demanding. KONAMI’s February 12, 2026 PlayStation Blog overview introduced the traversal emphasis, which is also reflected in the later official game information and developer interview.
This changes the whip’s announced role rather than replacing its combat identity. A weapon that also helps Rose cross spaces can connect traversal and fighting: where the player moves, when they use the whip, and how they respond to threats may all matter during an encounter. That is a design implication of the described mechanic, not confirmation of exactly how any level or fight will play.

The comparison with older games should be phrased carefully. The official materials establish that swinging traversal is a newly emphasized dimension of the whip in this game; they do not provide a complete, entry-by-entry mechanic comparison with every previous Castlevania. Nor do they quantify how much faster it is, how often swinging is required, or how the mechanic affects difficulty. The Xbox Wire interview is an early preview and developer conversation, not a review of the released version.
How do exploration and progression differ?
The game’s announced progression adds several ways to shape Rose’s capabilities. KONAMI says equipment spans seven weapon categories; relics can affect offense and defense; and Arcana abilities are created from defeated bosses. Its maps are described as combining new features with familiar elements inspired by classic entries. Those details appear on the official game page.
Weapons and relics
Seven weapon categories suggest that the whip will not be the only equipment choice, while relics provide another layer of offensive or defensive adjustment. Together, these systems point toward more build choices than a design centered solely on one signature weapon. The official description does not list the seven categories, specify how many items are available, or explain whether equipment can be changed at any time. It would be premature to infer a particular inventory system or the relative strength of one setup.

Arcana from bosses
Arcana abilities are tied to bosses the player defeats. That creates a stated link between overcoming major encounters and gaining abilities, giving boss victories a role in progression as well as story or spectacle. The available description does not explain the number of Arcana, whether players can equip several at once, or how these abilities compare with weapons and relics. Those details are important to how flexible the system feels, but are not established in the announcements.
Maps that mix familiar and new elements
KONAMI describes the maps as combining new features with elements inspired by classic entries. That is a useful signal of intent: the game is not being framed as a purely linear action sequence, nor is it described as a direct recreation of an earlier map. Beyond that, the publisher has not supplied a full map structure in the cited overview. The announcements do not settle the size of the world, how much backtracking it requires, or how its exploration compares in length with any particular older game.
How does the Paris setting compare with Castlevania’s familiar imagery?
The new adventure takes place in Paris in 1499, with the catacombs and Dracula’s castle among its named locations. That setting combines a specific historical city and year with the series’ supernatural gothic imagery. KONAMI also identifies Death, Medusa and Carmilla as familiar presences, while describing the game as introducing new material. The developers say the setting is intended to give the title its own identity rather than simply repeat an earlier one. The official site and Xbox Wire’s interview provide those details.

That combination is the clearest announced answer to whether the game is meant to feel familiar or fresh. The named characters, castle and gothic atmosphere tie it to Castlevania; Rose, Paris and the new map and progression elements distinguish this particular chapter. The sources describe the intended art direction and setting, but do not establish how varied the finished environments are or how much time the game spends in each location.
What does the comparison mean for returning players?
Returning players can reasonably expect several recognizable anchors: a Belmont protagonist, the Vampire Killer, 2D action-exploration, gothic horror and a direct narrative connection to Dracula’s Curse. They can also expect the design to place more emphasis on using the whip to traverse spaces and on choosing equipment and abilities. Those are announced features, not a guarantee that the game will recreate the feel of a favorite earlier entry.
Players approaching Castlevania for the first time do not need to assume that this is a remake or that they must have played every game in the series. Its official placement after Dracula’s Curse gives the story a predecessor, but the sources do not say that knowledge of the earlier game is a prerequisite. KONAMI’s announcements establish the family link and setting; they do not explain how the new story will onboard newcomers.

The developers have also emphasized the challenge of carrying forward a series that means different things to different fans. Nouaille said, “Castlevania means something different to everyone. We all grew up with different games, different characters, and different memories.” That interview context is useful: the comparison is not a promise that one older game’s exact formula will return. It is an account of the specific foundations this team says it chose to preserve while creating a new installment. Xbox Wire’s July 24 interview also records Taniguchi’s view that the collaboration combined Evil Empire’s passion for Castlevania and expertise in action games.
What can’t be judged before release?
The game is scheduled for October 15, 2026, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam and Nintendo Switch, according to KONAMI’s release announcement. On October 13, two days before that scheduled date, the announced mechanics and story can be compared with earlier games, but the finished experience cannot yet be treated as established by those sources.
In particular, the announcements do not establish:
- How difficult the game is, or whether its challenge is consistent across its levels and bosses.
- How long a playthrough takes or how much optional exploration it contains.
- Whether the weapon, relic and Arcana systems are balanced or meaningfully change the best approach to encounters.
- How well the movement controls feel in practice, including whether whip-swinging is precise or satisfying.
- How the released game performs across platforms, or what players and critics will think of it.
KONAMI’s official descriptions and the Xbox Wire preview establish what the developers have announced and the goals they have described. They are not evidence of final quality or broad player reception. A fair comparison can therefore explain the game’s lineage and planned design, but should leave verdicts on execution until the released version can be assessed.
