For Belgium’s senior men’s team, the Federal Coach announces the squad about a week before each international period. The Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) publishes the selected players and individual player statistics, but its public material does not explain the goalkeeper-specific reasoning behind each call-up.
Who makes the selection, and when is it announced?
The RBFA says the Federal Coach announces the senior men’s selection about a week before each international period. Its Belgian Red Devils squad page records players who represented the men’s A team at the latest gathering and provides individual statistics.

As of 4 October 2026, the RBFA identifies Mark van Bommel as national coach from 15 August 2026, with a contract through UEFA EURO 2028. The coach and squad can change, so the latest RBFA announcement is the authority for any new international window.

Being named in a squad does not establish who will start, who is the reserve, or whether every goalkeeper has the same match role. The page documents the selected group; it does not publish a formal depth chart.
What does the RBFA say about how candidates are evaluated?
The federation’s public pages establish who announces the squad, when it is announced, and which players were selected. They do not set out a goalkeeper-specific scoring system or say how the staff weigh individual candidates.

The RBFA has published broader material about coaching. A December 2022 head-coach recruitment profile said the coach should support choices “with data, technology and objective parameters.” That describes a general expectation for the head-coach role at that time; it is not a goalkeeper-selection formula or evidence of the metrics used by Van Bommel’s staff.

The RBFA also listed specialist goalkeeper coach Max Urwantschky on the senior-team technical staff announced on 9 March 2023, under then-coach Domenico Tedesco, for the campaign through EURO 2024. This is historical context, not confirmation of the goalkeeper-coaching staff in 2026.

What the public information does not establish
The cited RBFA material does not specify a minimum number of club starts, a save-percentage threshold, an age preference, or a fixed first-, second- and third-choice order. Although the squad page provides player statistics, it does not connect a particular statistic to a call-up decision.
Factors such as club form, fitness, distribution, command of the area, tactical fit, experience or training performance may be relevant in football generally, but these sources do not identify them as official RBFA criteria. It would therefore be misleading to present any one of them—or a numerical cutoff—as Belgium’s published rule.
