Beauty brands monitor online retail distribution by comparing sellers and listings across retailer sites, marketplaces, and other storefronts with an up-to-date record of authorized sellers. They investigate exceptions—such as an unfamiliar seller, an unexpected market, or unusual buying patterns—but an alert or low price is a reason to check, not proof of counterfeiting or wrongdoing.
What online distribution monitoring is—and what it is not
Distribution monitoring helps a brand answer who is selling its products, where listings appear, and whether those sellers and listings fit the brand’s authorized channels and commercial policies. It can also feed investigations into suspected diversion or counterfeiting.

Keep three related jobs distinct:
- Seller discovery: finding sellers and storefronts offering the brand’s products.
- Price or MAP monitoring: checking observed prices against the brand’s own applicable pricing policy. A minimum advertised price policy is not a universal legal rule; the relevant law and agreements depend on jurisdiction and circumstances.
- Brand protection: investigating suspected counterfeiting, diversion, or misuse and deciding whether a response is justified.
These functions can share data, but they answer different questions. A seller outside a public list may warrant verification with the brand; the available evidence does not establish that every unlisted seller is unauthorized or that its goods are counterfeit.

Maintain an internal registry that identifies authorized sellers by brand, product, market, channel, and current authorization status. Keep it current as contracts and distribution arrangements change. Without a reliable baseline, a monitoring system can surface listings but cannot reliably distinguish expected distribution from exceptions.

Public verification pages can help customers and business partners check some sellers, but they are not necessarily a complete record of a brand’s arrangements. Murad publishes authorized-retailer guidance and describes its Amazon seller policy (Murad Authorized Retailers). ghd publishes seller information and guidance for consumers checking retailers (ghd Help Center). One Master Distribution says its own verification tool lists official retailers for selected brands and is updated daily; that is a description of its tool, not an industry-wide standard (One Master Distribution FAQ).
How a monitoring workflow works
1. Discover relevant listings and sellers
Monitor the websites and marketplaces that matter to the brand’s actual distribution footprint, including authorized retailers and other relevant storefronts. Some providers describe scanning marketplaces, country-specific Google Shopping results, and the broader web, then collecting seller identities, listings, prices, and first-seen dates. Smart Protection describes cross-channel monitoring and reporting on grey-market activity. Coverage depends on provider, country, site access, and service configuration, so confirm what is actually monitored before choosing a service.

2. Match listings to the product catalog
Compare discovered listings with the brand’s product catalog using identifiers and product attributes. Altosight describes matching by product names, images, and attributes, including when titles change or barcodes are absent. Those are provider-described capabilities; no independent match-accuracy figures are established here. Ask how the system explains a match and how staff can correct a false one.

3. Flag exceptions without treating them as findings
Useful review signals can include a seller missing from the current registry, an unexpected country or channel, unusual buying patterns, an apparent price-policy discrepancy, duplicate or altered listings, or suspected counterfeit or diverted stock. Each is a lead that needs context. ghd says it monitors unusual buying patterns and investigates suspected fraudulent accounts; that is a company-reported practice, not evidence that every unusual pattern is misconduct.

- QUALITY INVOICES: Adams Order books provide a professional invoice or customer receipt; a great way to create and maintain a professional image for small businesses and service providers
- 50 TWO-PART CARBONLESS FORMS: Customers get the perforated white top copy; retain the canary and pink copies for your records
- WRAP-AROUND COVER: Fold the back cover between sets to keep invoices neat and legible
- ROOM FOR CUSTOMIZATION: A blank space at top leaves room for your company stamp; a big savings over custom-printed forms
- CONSECUTIVELY NUMBERED: Large 6-digit numbers in the upper right hand corner help you thumb through orders quickly
4. Preserve evidence and investigate
For each case, keep the seller identity, listing URL, matched product, channel and country, visible price and availability, first-seen date, and dated evidence of the listing. Check the seller against current contracts, distributor records, and the brand’s own authorization data before deciding what the listing means.
Companies describe different investigation practices. Murad says it uses tracking systems to trace diverted products back to their original source. ghd says it may purchase from unauthorized sellers to investigate product origin. These are company-reported examples, not a guarantee that every brand can trace every unit or a universal recommendation to make test purchases.

5. Choose a proportionate response
Depending on the evidence, a brand might contact a seller, report a suspected seller to the brand, send a notice, use a marketplace or intellectual-property process, or consider legal or commercial action. VantageBP says personnel confirm flagged listings before notices are sent; Smart Protection describes requests to cease unauthorized activity. The appropriate response depends on the brand’s rights and contracts, marketplace rules, product authenticity, evidence, and jurisdiction. An automated alert alone should not trigger an accusation.
How to evaluate monitoring systems
Ask providers to demonstrate coverage and workflow using the channels, countries, and products relevant to your distribution—not just a feature list. Vendor descriptions establish what providers say their services do, but do not provide independent accuracy or performance comparisons.

| Evaluation area | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Channel and country coverage | Which retailer sites, marketplaces, direct sellers, and other storefronts are monitored? Which countries, and how does access vary by site? |
| Seller-level visibility | Does the service identify individual sellers and connect storefronts to a business identity, or mainly report product prices? |
| Product matching | Can it match products when titles, images, attributes, or identifiers vary? What evidence is shown, and how are corrections handled? |
| Captured data | Are seller, listing URL, product match, price, availability, location, and first-seen details available? |
| Price and content checks | Are MAP or other policy checks distinct from seller discovery? Can the service monitor Buy Box state or listing text and images? |
| Evidence and review | Are listing records dated and retained? Is human review available before seller contact or enforcement? |
| Investigation and action | Does the provider only alert, or also support investigation, outreach, takedown workflows, and reporting? |

A screenshot can document what a public listing showed at a particular point in time, but it does not by itself establish seller authorization, ownership of inventory, or product authenticity. If your team uses browser automation to capture pages, decide in advance which page elements and conditions matter: consent banners, popups, chat widgets, country or device-specific content, and pages that load listings after a delay can all affect what appears in the record.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its clean-shot options accept cookie and consent banners as a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
