A college football backup quarterback prepares before kickoff by learning the offense in meetings and practice, then stays engaged with the game and ready to execute if called. The exact sideline routine varies by program; there is no single checklist or guaranteed headset, tablet, or warmup that applies to every reserve.
What preparation looks like before the game
The essential work is knowing the offense well enough to act without a long reset. That means learning its terminology, assignments, play calls, and decision rules through team meetings and practice. Boise State said in September 2024 that it continued team meetings so players could master the playbook even as the program adopted coach-to-player communication (Boise State’s account).

A 2015 report on Arizona State reserve Mike Bercovici offers a specific illustration: it described him immersing himself in the playbook and approaching practice and game preparation as though he were the starter. When the starter was injured, Bercovici got his opportunity (ESPN’s 2015 report). That is one player’s experience, not proof that every backup follows the same routine.

During play, the reserve’s practical task is to follow the game and remain prepared to receive the team’s communication and execute if the role changes. Understanding the offense beforehand matters: a substitution can come suddenly, leaving little time to learn a call or ask for a detailed explanation.

Some teams use video review or coach feedback between series. An Associated Press report from January 2024 described video tablets being used to give players immediate context during bowl-game experimentation, including feedback on what had just happened (AP’s bowl-game report). It does not establish that every backup has a tablet or that reserves everywhere have the same sideline duties.
How coach communication and video fit in
The NCAA announced optional football technology rules for the 2024 season, including coach-to-player communication through a helmet and video tablets for team personnel (NCAA’s 2024 announcement). Whether a reserve is equipped with a communication device, and how any system is configured or used, depends on the applicable rules and the team’s procedures. Permission for a technology does not mean every backup receives a live feed.

Boise State’s 2024 account described keeping traditional signal-calling as a fallback while the team adjusted to coach-to-player communication. That illustrates why technology does not replace learning the offense or planning how to communicate without it.
The AP report covered 2023 postseason experimentation and the transition into the 2024 rules—not a universal account of ordinary games in every season. It quoted Ohio State coach Ryan Day saying, “Down the road it makes a lot of sense,” as he discussed the preparation time needed to adopt new communication technology. For current eligibility, configuration, and limits, consult the NCAA football rules page, since rules and interpretations can change by season.

Why there is no universal sideline routine
Programs differ in how they communicate calls and use available tools. A reserve might get information through a coach, established signals, or technology permitted and configured for that team. The available college-football examples do not establish a standard routine for tablets, wristbands, headsets, or warmups. The consistent preparation principle is broader: know the offense, track the game, and be ready to carry out the team’s plan when called.
