Their practice duties vary by program, but the job is more than waiting on the sideline.
They prepare for a chance they may not get
A backup cannot assume he will play, but he has to be ready if the starter is injured, ineffective, or otherwise unavailable. Tyler Mizzell described that approach at a Ball State news conference on September 28, 2026, after making his starting debut: “As the backup quarterback at the start of the season, you’re asked to prepare like the starter even though you might not get the opportunity to play.” He said he had followed the same preparation approach through the season’s first five weeks, including watching film and executing the game plan. Film and meetings keep the backup on the same plan
Preparation begins with learning the same opponent and weekly offensive plan the starter is learning. At Lehigh, backup Holden Nagin said the quarterbacks reviewed film together: “We’re almost always doing the exact same thing, looking at the same exact film at the exact same time.” Shared study helps a backup understand the calls and expectations the offense is using that week, rather than preparing for a separate version of the game. Studying alongside the starter does not necessarily mean taking the same practice reps. At Lehigh, Nagin said he sometimes ran the opponent’s plays against the first-team defense while the starter worked with the offense. That assignment let him simulate the opponent for the defense while continuing to learn the team’s offense through meetings and film. It is a Lehigh example, not a standard assignment for every college program; the available accounts do not establish a universal balance of starter reps, scout-team work, or opponent simulation.

Knowing the call is not enough
A quarterback stepping in must understand what the call asks the entire offense to do and how to respond to the defense. Lehigh backup Patrick Coan emphasized the mental side: “For me, it’s just like the mental side of the game, like knowing coverages and all that stuff.” That means studying defensive looks and recognizing what is happening before and after the snap, rather than simply memorizing a play’s words. Lehigh’s report on backup quarterback preparation
Nagin also said a backup needs to know the responsibilities of the other offensive positions so he can direct a play. A quarterback who knows the protection, routes, and teammates’ assignments is better equipped to communicate clearly when the offense is moving quickly or has to adjust.

The role combines acceptance with competition
Being prepared for a backup role does not mean giving up on the starting job. Lehigh offensive coordinator Dan Hunt described the balance: “The best ones understand their role as being the backup quarterback, but they are not satisfied with it, and they are going to push every day to show they should be the starter.” Accepting the present assignment allows a backup to contribute to the team; continuing to compete keeps pressure on his own development and readiness. What varies from team to team
The accounts show shared film study, opponent-simulation work, and a need to command more than the quarterback’s own assignment. They do not establish a universal policy for how much of the offense a backup must know, whether he receives first-team reps, or how a staff announces a depth-chart change. Those details are program-specific, so a particular team’s weekly routine should not be assumed to apply across college football.
