Babel helps JavaScript run on chosen older browsers by transforming newer syntax into forms those browsers understand. With separate, deliberate polyfill configuration, a build can also supply selected missing JavaScript built-ins. It does not make every part of a website compatible: CSS, browser APIs, dependencies, and real application behavior still need their own checks.
What Babel does for browser compatibility
Babel is a JavaScript toolchain primarily used to convert ECMAScript 2015+ code into JavaScript compatible with current and older browsers or other environments. Babel’s overview describes that role. The compatibility target is determined by the browsers and runtimes your project chooses to support.
@babel/preset-env uses target environments and compatibility data to select syntax transforms. Babel maintains that data through @babel/compat-data. Instead of manually selecting every transform, you specify targets and let the preset choose the transforms relevant to them.
What Babel does not fix automatically
Syntax transforms are not polyfills
A transform rewrites syntax in compiled JavaScript—for example, newer language constructs may be expressed using syntax older engines can parse. A polyfill is an implementation of a runtime feature that the browser does not provide. Transforming code that calls a missing built-in does not, by itself, add that built-in.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Polyfills must be selected and injected separately. Babel’s Usage Guide describes target-aware polyfill use; the appropriate configuration depends on the Babel version and the project’s requirements.
JavaScript is only part of a web page
Babel does not establish that CSS works in every target browser, that every browser API exists, or that a third-party dependency supports your targets. Nor can compilation prove that the complete application behaves correctly in each browser. Treat Babel as one layer of a compatibility plan, not a universal browser-compatibility switch.

Choose and configure browser targets deliberately
Start by deciding which browser versions your product promises to support. Babel recommends a Browserslist configuration for browser projects. You can place a query in a .browserslistrc file or in package.json; alternatively, configure explicit target versions in preset-env. These choices express different policies: a query can describe a maintained browser range, while explicit versions make particular minimums clear.
For example, a project may place a Browserslist query in package.json and configure preset-env to read it:

"browserslist": ["defaults"]
}
{
"presets": ["@babel/preset-env"]
}
These are configuration examples, not a universal support recommendation. The defaults query is a moving target as its underlying data changes. Choose a query that matches your users and support commitments, and review it when those commitments or tooling change. Babel’s options documentation says preset-env assumes Browserslist’s defaults query when no targets are specified. If legacy browsers matter to your product, state and maintain the intended targets rather than relying on an unstated assumption.
Configure polyfills for your Babel version
Polyfill instructions are version-sensitive. Older preset-env examples use useBuiltIns with corejs, but the current preset-env documentation says those options have been removed in Babel 8 and directs users to babel-plugin-polyfill-corejs3 for injection. Do not copy an older snippet into a Babel 8 setup without checking the current instructions.

- Identify the Babel major version used by the build, including the versions of the preset and related packages.
- List runtime features that need support in the target browsers; distinguish missing built-ins from syntax that requires transformation.
- Follow the polyfill plugin’s instructions for that Babel version and configure injection for the features and targets the project needs.
- Inspect the build output and test it in the supported browser range. Confirm that required implementations are present without assuming every feature needs a polyfill.
For version-specific setup details, consult the current preset-env documentation and the documentation for the polyfill plugin you install.

A successful Babel build means the configured compiler completed; it does not prove compatibility. Test the application in the actual browser versions your policy names, with particular attention to features used by critical flows and dependencies. If a failure appears, determine whether it is a parse-time syntax issue, a missing runtime feature, CSS behavior, an unsupported browser API, a package limitation, or an application bug. That diagnosis tells you whether Babel transforms, a polyfill, another compatibility measure, or a code change is appropriate.

If your goal is to capture how a page renders across browsers while checking your own compatibility work, a screenshot API can handle capture without local browser automation. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server; its clean-shot workflow accepts cookie banners and removes known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP server, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
One GET request returns an image or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details.
