Automatic defrost is a controller-managed sequence that removes ice from a commercial evaporator so the coil can transfer heat effectively again. The controller starts defrost by schedule, command or configured evaporator conditions; applies electric heat, hot gas, warmer air or another supported method; then ends the cycle using temperature, time or a signal. Drainage, equalization and a fan delay may occur before cooling resumes.

Why commercial refrigeration systems need defrost

The evaporator is the part of the refrigeration system that absorbs heat from the refrigerated space. Ice accumulating on its heat-transfer surface acts as an insulating layer and restricts the intended exchange between room air and refrigerant. Danfoss describes the fundamental objective as restoring “a heat exchanger (evaporator) that is free of ice whereby the transfer of heat from the air in the room to the refrigerant is not hampered by the accretion of ice.” Danfoss explains the purpose of defrost.

Defrost is therefore not simply a comfort feature or a timer that briefly pauses cooling. It is a coordinated operating mode involving the controller, compressor, refrigerant valves, heaters, evaporator sensors, fans and drains. The exact order and timing depend on the installed equipment, controller configuration and defrost method.

The stages of a typical automatic defrost cycle

There is no single sequence used by every freezer, display case or walk-in. The following stages describe the functions commonly coordinated by commercial refrigeration controls.

1. The controller initiates defrost

A controller can begin a cycle from a programmed time schedule, an external command or an adaptive strategy. A particular Danfoss ERC 112 configuration monitors evaporator temperature after a minimum interval and can request defrost when configured temperature criteria indicate that it is needed. That adaptive behavior belongs to the documented controller and should not be treated as a universal algorithm. The ERC 112 user guide describes the relevant control functions.

Some installations use regular time-based initiation because it is predictable. Others use temperature information or a supervisory signal to avoid running a cycle when the evaporator does not need it. A controller may also coordinate several evaporators so that participating sections enter or leave defrost in an agreed sequence.

2. Refrigeration is prepared for the heat application

Before heat is applied, the control may stop or isolate parts of the normal refrigeration circuit. In a documented Parker Refrigerating Specialties hot-gas sequence, a pump-out phase allows liquid refrigerant to leave the evaporator through the suction line. An optional soft-gas phase can precede the main hot-gas stage. These are configurable phases in that control strategy, not mandatory steps for every commercial system. The sequence is shown in Parker Catalog C12.

In other systems, solenoid valves, suction controls or compressor commands perform the preparation differently. The important principle is that the controller changes the refrigerant path and operating outputs before exposing the iced evaporator to the selected heat source.

3. Heat melts the ice

The controller energizes the equipment used by the chosen defrost method. Electric systems use resistance elements mounted around or near the evaporator. In a Danfoss controller description, the compressor and solenoid are stopped during electric defrost while the heater supplies the melting heat. Hot-gas systems route compressor-discharge gas through controlled valves to the evaporator, using the compressor circuit as the heat source. Suitable installations can also use warmer room air or natural off-cycle warming, while some industrial controllers support water or brine arrangements.

4. The controller terminates defrost

Termination can be based on an evaporator sensor reaching a configured temperature, a maximum elapsed time, an external contact or a combination of these safeguards. Danfoss documentation describes temperature-based and time-based stopping options for particular controllers. Parker documents a hot-gas sequence that uses a preset time, with the option to stop earlier from an analog temperature measurement or remote contact.

These settings are not universal industry targets. A factory default, termination temperature or maximum duration applies only to the controller, model and installation for which it was specified. Room temperature, evaporator design, refrigerant circuit and control settings all affect the appropriate values.

5. Water drains and the system may equalize

Once ice has melted, water must leave the evaporator and drain pan without being carried into the refrigerated space. Some hot-gas sequences include an equalization phase, and a drip-tray heater may remain active as part of the configured sequence. The availability and order of these functions depend on the controller and the equipment wiring.

6. Fans restart after a delay

Evaporator fans commonly remain off during defrost and for a period afterward. Danfoss describes fan delay as a way to let remaining droplets freeze on the evaporator or drain away before air movement can blow water into the case or room. Parker also documents a configurable fan-delay stage. The delay is not merely a noise or energy setting: it is part of moisture management and must match the installation.

7. Normal refrigeration resumes

After the configured stages finish, the controller returns outputs to refrigeration mode. In systems with multiple evaporators, one section may wait for the other participating sections before normal cooling is restored. The precise interlock and restart logic are controller-specific; a system that appears to remain in defrost may be waiting for another stage or a required signal rather than failing outright.

Electric, hot-gas and off-cycle defrost compared

Method Heat source and principle Where it fits Important limitations
Electric Resistance elements heat the evaporator while the controller changes normal refrigeration outputs. Applications designed with dedicated heater elements and the necessary electrical controls. The heater hardware, compressor and solenoid sequence, safety limits and duration are model-specific. No universal energy or cycle-time advantage is established.
Hot gas Compressor-discharge gas is routed through valves to the evaporator to melt ice. Systems designed with the required hot-gas, suction, liquid and drain controls. The valve order, pump-out, soft-gas, equalization and termination safeguards vary by installation. It is a refrigerant-circuit operation, not a generic retrofit procedure.
Off-cycle, air or natural Cooling stops and warmer room air or natural temperature conditions melt frost. Danfoss describes air defrost for positive-temperature rooms where the coil and room conditions make it suitable. It is not appropriate for every freezer or coil. Applicability depends on room temperature, frost load and the ability to warm the evaporator sufficiently.
Water or brine Water or brine supplies the melting action in supported industrial arrangements. Industrial evaporator controls may provide these options; Danfoss lists them for the EKE 400 controller family. The cited documentation establishes controller support, not a general design, flow rate or performance recipe.

The available manufacturer documentation does not establish a universal ranking for efficiency, cost, defrost duration or temperature recovery among these methods. Selection is an equipment-design decision rather than a rule that one method is always best.

How the controller knows when to start and stop

Scheduled initiation

A time schedule starts defrost at programmed intervals. This approach is straightforward and predictable, but the interval and number of cycles must be set for the particular evaporator and operating conditions. The existence of a timed function does not establish a standard interval for all commercial refrigerators.

Temperature or adaptive initiation

An evaporator sensor can provide the controller with evidence about coil conditions. In the documented ERC 112 adaptive mode, the controller waits through a minimum period and evaluates evaporator temperature against configured criteria before requesting a cycle. Adaptive control should be understood as a capability of a particular controller, not a guarantee of a specific energy saving or frost reduction.

External initiation and termination signals

A supervisory controller, remote contact or other configured input may request or end a cycle. Parker documents remote-contact termination as an option in its hot-gas sequence. Such signals have meaning only when the connected controller, wiring and sequence are designed to use them.

Termination safeguards

Temperature termination can prevent unnecessary heating after the coil is clear, while a maximum-time limit provides a fallback if a sensor does not reach its target. A system may use both. If the evaporator remains iced after the time limit, the cycle can end without solving the underlying problem; if it never reaches the configured termination condition, refrigeration may not resume normally.

Why fans stop during defrost

Stopping the evaporator fans prevents the defrost heat and liquid water from being distributed through the refrigerated space. The post-defrost delay is especially important: water left on the coil can be blown into products, onto surfaces or into the room if airflow starts immediately. The controller waits for the configured drainage or refreezing condition before restarting fans, as described in Danfoss and Parker control documentation.

A fan that is off during defrost is therefore often behaving correctly. The diagnostic question is whether it restarts after the configured delay and after the controller has returned to refrigeration. A fan that remains off in normal cooling may indicate a separate control, motor, wiring or interlock problem.

What makes hot-gas defrost different

Hot-gas defrost uses heat already available in the refrigeration circuit. Instead of energizing a dedicated resistance heater, valves direct compressor-discharge gas toward the evaporator. Because refrigerant flow direction and pressure relationships change, the sequence can include pump-out, soft gas, hot gas, equalization and controlled return to refrigeration.

This is why hot-gas defrost cannot be reduced to “send hot refrigerant into the coil.” The controller must coordinate the compressor and multiple valves, protect the circuit during transitions, manage liquid refrigerant and provide a defined termination path. The Parker documentation illustrates one industrial sequence; other systems use different hardware and logic. Hot-gas work should be performed from the exact equipment documentation by a qualified refrigeration professional.

Controller and component roles

  • Evaporator sensor: Supplies temperature information used for termination and, on supported controllers, adaptive initiation.
  • Controller: Starts the cycle, commands heaters or valves, applies time limits, handles termination, controls fan delay and returns the system to refrigeration.
  • Electric heater: Provides resistance heat where electric defrost is installed.
  • Compressor and hot-gas valves: Supply and route discharge gas in a hot-gas arrangement.
  • Drain pan or drip-tray heater: Keeps melted water moving in systems that include this output.
  • Evaporator fans: Stop during the heat and drainage stages, then restart after the configured delay.
  • External or supervisory input: Can request or terminate defrost when the controller supports that signal.

Commercial control families documented for these functions include Danfoss ERC 21x and EKC 223/224 controls, the ERC 112 controller, AK-CC evaporator controllers and the industrial/heavy-commercial EKE 400. Copeland also documents a universal replacement controller with timed initiation, temperature termination and fan delay. These product pages describe capabilities, not interchangeable parts or guaranteed compatibility: ERC 211/213/214, EKC 223/224, EKE 400 and the Copeland universal replacement controller.

Diagnosing an automatic-defrost problem

Observed symptom What the sequence suggests Checks for a qualified technician
Ice remains on the evaporator after a completed cycle The heat source may not have operated, termination may have occurred too early, or drainage may have left refrozen water. Verify controller records, heater or hot-gas outputs, sensor reading, termination settings, valves and drain condition against the equipment manual.
Water is blown into the room when cooling resumes Fans may be restarting before drainage or the configured fan delay is complete. Check fan-delay settings, drain-pan operation, evaporator level and whether the controller is actually completing its defrost stages.
Cooling does not return after defrost The controller may still be waiting for termination, equalization, another evaporator or an external signal. Check the active control state, sensor value, time-limit status, interlocks and supervisory inputs.
Defrost happens too often or at unexpected times A schedule, adaptive criterion or external command may be initiating cycles. Review programmed times, minimum intervals, adaptive parameters and command inputs rather than changing a generic setting.

Do not bypass a sensor, valve interlock or time limit simply to force cooling. Refrigeration circuits can contain high pressure, electrical hazards and regulated refrigerants; diagnosis and adjustment require the system’s wiring diagram, controller manual and appropriate technician qualifications.

Choosing or replacing a defrost controller

A replacement controller is not selected by the word “defrost” on the product label. Before any substitution, verify:

  • the exact evaporator and refrigeration application;
  • refrigerant and pressure requirements;
  • sensor type, range and location;
  • heater, compressor, fan and valve voltage and current ratings;
  • the required electric, hot-gas, off-cycle, water or brine sequence;
  • termination, maximum-time, equalization and fan-delay functions;
  • communication, remote-contact and multi-evaporator coordination requirements; and
  • the manufacturer’s wiring, firmware and parameter documentation.

Manufacturer pages establish that these controller families and functions exist, but they do not establish current stock, retail price or fit for a particular refrigerator. Compatibility must be confirmed from the installed model documentation or by a qualified refrigeration technician.

What automatic defrost does not guarantee

  • It does not guarantee a fixed cycle duration; duration varies with method, settings, coil design and operating conditions.
  • It does not guarantee a universal defrost frequency; schedules and adaptive criteria are controller-specific.
  • It does not guarantee a particular energy saving; the cited documentation provides no comparable industry-wide percentage.
  • It does not mean every fan, heater or valve runs in the same order; the installed sequence determines the outputs.
  • It does not make a system maintenance-free; a failed sensor, blocked drain, heater, valve or controller can still prevent proper defrost.

Bottom line

Automatic defrost is a controlled change of operating state: the controller initiates a cycle, prepares the evaporator, applies an approved heat source, waits for a temperature, time or signal-based termination, manages melted water and delays the fans before restoring refrigeration. Electric, hot-gas, off-cycle and industrial water or brine systems follow different hardware sequences, so the correct behavior is always the one specified for the particular evaporator and controller.
