How Australian Game Ratings Compare With ESRB and PEGI Ratings

Australian game ratings do not convert directly to ESRB or PEGI labels. Australia uses G, PG, M, MA 15+ and R 18+: G, PG and M are advisory, while MA 15+ and R 18+ are legally restricted. ESRB uses categories such as Everyone, Teen and Mature 17+ as age-appropriateness guidance, and PEGI uses numbered labels from 3 to 18. The letters and numbers can look similar while carrying different legal effects and content thresholds.

For a particular game, check the rating and descriptors assigned in the country where it is being bought or played. In Australia, the National Classification Database entry and its consumer advice are more useful than trying to translate an overseas label. Then use the console, computer or mobile device’s parental controls as a separate access decision.

The short answer: there is no universal conversion chart

Australian, ESRB and PEGI classifications are separate systems. They assess content through different rules, use different wording and attach different legal consequences to their labels. A rating that appears numerically or alphabetically similar is not necessarily equivalent.

The most important example is the letter M. In Australia, M means content of moderate impact and is an advisory classification; it does not legally bar a child under 15 from accessing the game. In the ESRB system, M means Mature 17+, a recommendation that the game is generally intended for people aged 17 and older. Australia’s legally restricted category is MA 15+, not M.

An Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC) report published an illustrative correspondence between PEGI and Australian categories: PEGI 3 roughly with G, PEGI 7 with PG, PEGI 12 with M, PEGI 16 with MA 15+, and PEGI 18 with R 18+. That table is a policy comparison, not a PEGI-issued conversion rule. It does not prove that two releases contain identical material or that their legal access rules match.

Use the local rating for the release in front of you, read its descriptors or consumer advice, and treat any cross-system mapping as a rough orientation only.

How Australia’s classification system works

Australian Classification describes game impact levels as G (Very mild), PG (Mild), M (Moderate), MA 15+ (Strong) and R 18+ (High). Context affects the result. The Board considers a work’s purpose, tone, style, detail, duration, realism and interactivity rather than counting isolated words or scenes.

Australian label Impact wording Access status What it communicates
G Very mild Advisory Content is suitable for a general audience, subject to the listed advice.
PG Mild Advisory Parental guidance is recommended for younger children.
M Moderate Advisory Some material may be unsuitable for children, but the label is not a legal minimum age of 15.
MA 15+ Strong Legally restricted People younger than 15 may not legally access the game unless an applicable adult-supervision rule and venue policy permit it.
R 18+ High Legally restricted Access is limited to adults aged 18 and over.

Australian classifications consist of a rating and consumer advice. The symbol alone is therefore incomplete. A game can carry advice about themes, violence, coarse language, drug use, nudity or sex, plus game-specific information about online interactivity, in-game purchases, chance-based purchases and simulated gambling.

“Advisory” does not mean meaningless. A retailer, school, platform or family can still impose a stricter rule, and a parent may decide that an M-rated game is unsuitable for a particular child. It means the classification itself does not create the same statutory age barrier as MA 15+ or R 18+.

What the ESRB labels mean

The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) presents its categories as age-appropriateness suggestions. Its main categories are Everyone, Everyone 10+, Teen, Mature 17+ and Adults Only 18+. It also uses Early Childhood for some educational products and Rating Pending while a product is awaiting a final rating.

ESRB category Typical label wording How to interpret it
Everyone Suitable for all ages General-audience guidance, subject to descriptors.
Everyone 10+ May be suitable for ages 10 and older May include more cartoon, fantasy or mild content than Everyone.
Teen Generally suitable for ages 13 and older Read descriptors for violence, language, suggestive material and other triggers.
Mature 17+ Generally suitable for ages 17 and older This is ESRB’s M; it is not the same as Australia’s M.
Adults Only 18+ Intended only for adults ESRB’s highest standard category; it should not be treated as Australia’s R 18+ automatically.

ESRB places content descriptors beside the category. These identify content that triggered the rating or that buyers may reasonably want to know about, such as violence, sexual content, strong language, drugs or gambling. The descriptor is not a second age rating; it explains why the category was assigned or highlights a potentially important element.

ESRB also displays interactive elements. These can flag features such as user interaction, online communication or purchases. ESRB states that interactive elements do not affect the rating assignment. They are notices about how the product operates, not evidence that the content category should be raised.

Digital games and mobile apps may receive a rating through the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) process. IARC allows participating storefronts to obtain regional ratings through a streamlined questionnaire, which helps explain why a digital listing may show regional labels without a conventional boxed-game review in each country.

How PEGI labels work

PEGI (Pan European Game Information) uses the numbers 3, 7, 12, 16 and 18. The number is accompanied by content descriptors, such as violence, bad language, fear, sex, drugs, discrimination, gambling or in-game purchases, depending on the release and current PEGI presentation.

PEGI label General age guidance Important qualification
PEGI 3 Suitable for all ages Very mild material may still be explained by descriptors.
PEGI 7 Suitable from age 7 May include mild fear or violence in a fantasy context.
PEGI 12 Suitable from age 12 Content thresholds differ from both Australian M and ESRB Teen.
PEGI 16 Suitable from age 16 Often indicates stronger violence, language, sex or realistic treatment, but the descriptors remain essential.
PEGI 18 Adults only The number is PEGI guidance; local law and storefront enforcement can differ.

PEGI numbers are not Australian legal categories. A PEGI 16 label does not itself create or remove an Australian MA 15+ restriction, and a PEGI 18 label is not a substitute for checking whether the Australian release is R 18+, MA 15+ or another classification.

The ALRC’s indicative PEGI-to-Australia correspondence

The ALRC report provides the clearest published side-by-side illustration, but it must be read as indicative. It was a policy comparison rather than a current conversion chart issued by PEGI or Australian Classification.

PEGI label Indicative Australian correspondence in the ALRC table What the table does not establish
PEGI 3 G It does not prove identical content thresholds or advice.
PEGI 7 PG It does not determine local legal access.
PEGI 12 M It does not mean Australian M is a legal minimum age of 12 or 15.
PEGI 16 MA 15+ The apparent age numbers are not identical legal rules.
PEGI 18 R 18+ Each jurisdiction can apply different tests and restrictions.

“Roughly corresponds” is the safe way to describe this table. It is useful when orienting yourself to broad severity, but it cannot answer whether a particular scene, mechanic or purchase feature will receive the same treatment in another country.

Why Australian M is not ESRB M

Comparing the letters without reading their definitions creates the most common error. Australian M is a moderate-impact advisory classification. ESRB M expands to Mature 17+ and communicates a much older target audience. The two systems are not using the same scale.

Australian MA 15+ is the closer legal comparison to an older-teen restriction, but even that is not a guaranteed ESRB equivalent. ESRB categories are age-appropriateness suggestions, whereas Australian MA 15+ and R 18+ are legally restricted categories. A game could receive different labels because of differences in content thresholds, context, regional law, release edits or the information supplied during a digital-rating process.

Do not use a sentence such as “Australian M equals ESRB Mature.” A precise explanation is: “Australian M is advisory and has no legal 15-year minimum; ESRB Mature 17+ is an ESRB category suggesting suitability for adults and older teens. Check the descriptors and the local release.”

Consumer advice and descriptors: the part people skip

Two games with the same broad category can raise very different concerns. Australian consumer advice is designed to identify impactful or frequent elements, while ESRB and PEGI descriptors explain the content behind their labels. Read the text next to the symbol or number before making a decision.

Content themes and violence

Look for the specific treatment, not merely the presence of a genre. Stylised fantasy combat, realistic injury, horror imagery and prolonged cruelty can be evaluated differently because context, realism, tone, detail and duration matter.

Language, drugs, nudity and sex

Descriptors can distinguish coarse language from stronger language, references from depiction, and incidental material from sustained or interactive content. A category does not tell you which of these elements is present; the advice does.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Online interactivity

Online play can involve communication with strangers, user-generated material or interactions that are not fully controlled by the publisher. Australian advice may identify online interactivity, while ESRB interactive elements can flag user interaction. These notices are practical safety information, not a replacement for family settings and supervision.

In-game purchases

An in-game-purchase notice indicates that money can be spent inside the game. It does not, by itself, mean every purchase is treated as gambling or that the age category has been raised. Check whether the notice specifies chance-based purchases.

Australia’s special treatment of chance and simulated gambling

Australian classification has a notable distinction for gambling-like mechanics. Paid in-game purchases that include an element of chance, such as loot boxes, receive a minimum Australian classification of M. Simulated gambling receives a minimum classification of R 18+.

That rule does not mean every in-game purchase triggers M. A fixed-price cosmetic item, expansion or other purchase without an element of chance is not the same category of feature described by the chance-based threshold. Likewise, “simulated gambling” is a specific concept; the presence of a casino setting or a minigame should be assessed through the actual Australian advice and classification, not guessed from a screenshot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because ESRB and PEGI handle purchase and gambling notices through their own descriptors and criteria, an overseas label may not signal the same warning that an Australian listing does. For a game with loot boxes, card packs or casino-style mechanics, the Australian database entry is essential.

How to compare a specific game correctly

Use this process whenever a box, storefront or video shows a rating from another region.

  1. Identify the exact release. Confirm the title, platform, edition, downloadable version and whether the listing is for Australia, North America, Europe or another market. Expansions and re-releases can have their own entries.
  2. Find the Australian entry. Search the National Classification Database for the game’s title. Record the Australian symbol and every line of consumer advice, including online, purchase and gambling-related notices.
  3. Record the overseas label separately. Note the ESRB category and descriptors or the PEGI number and descriptors. Do not replace them with an assumed Australian equivalent.
  4. Compare age guidance. Ask what audience each system suggests. Treat the ALRC table only as a rough PEGI-to-Australia orientation, not as proof of equivalence.
  5. Compare legal access. Determine whether the local label is advisory or legally restricted. In Australia, that distinction changes at MA 15+ and R 18+.
  6. Compare content explanations. Match the actual descriptors: violence, language, sexual material, drugs, fear, gambling, online communication and purchases. A shared age number does not guarantee shared content advice.
  7. Check the storefront and account region. Digital stores can display a rating tied to the account or territory. Make sure the rating you are reading belongs to the place where the game will be accessed.
  8. Set access controls separately. Use the device’s parental-control settings to enforce the household rule. A classification label informs the decision; it does not configure the console, computer or phone.

Parental controls and legal restrictions are separate decisions

A parent may choose to block an advisory M game, allow a PG game only with supervision, or permit an MA 15+ game when the applicable legal and household conditions are satisfied. The classification system does not know a child’s maturity, family values or online circumstances.

On a console or mobile device, review age filters, content restrictions, purchase authentication, communication permissions and spending limits. Turn on a passcode so a child cannot change the settings. For online games, review voice and text chat, friend requests, user-generated content and cross-platform communication as separate controls where available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a legally restricted Australian category, also consider the retailer or platform’s enforcement. A parental-control setting cannot authorise access that local law or a venue’s policy prohibits. Conversely, a device may block content more strictly than the classification requires.

Common mistakes when translating ratings

Assuming the same letter means the same age

Australian M and ESRB M are the classic trap. Always expand the label in words and check whether it is advisory or restricted.

Subtracting or adding years mechanically

PEGI 16 is not automatically “Australian 15,” and PEGI 18 is not automatically R 18+. The ALRC comparison is broad and indicative, not arithmetic.

Ignoring descriptors

A category cannot tell you whether the concern is horror, language, sexual content, gambling or online interaction. The accompanying text is part of the rating information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating purchase notices as identical

An ESRB interactive-element notice and Australian advice about chance-based purchases serve different purposes. A general purchase notice does not establish that loot boxes are present, while a chance-based notice is materially more specific.

Using an old screenshot or a different edition

Ratings belong to a particular release and territory. A remaster, downloadable edition or edited regional version may have different advice. Verify the current local database entry.

Confusing advice with enforcement

G, PG and M in Australia are advisory. MA 15+ and R 18+ are restricted. ESRB categories are presented as age-appropriateness suggestions, not as a universal legal access system in every country where an ESRB logo appears.

Worked examples of the right reasoning

A game marked Australian M and ESRB M

Do not call these equivalent. Explain that the Australian label is moderate-impact advice without a legal 15-year minimum, while ESRB M means Mature 17+. Read both sets of descriptors and follow the Australian entry for an Australian purchase.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

A game marked PEGI 16 in Europe

The ALRC table places PEGI 16 roughly alongside Australian MA 15+, but that is only an indicative comparison. Find the Australian classification before deciding whether the game is legally restricted, and inspect the consumer advice for the exact release.

A game with loot boxes

Check whether the Australian advice identifies chance-based purchases. Paid purchases containing an element of chance receive at least M in Australia. Do not infer the same result from a generic overseas in-game-purchase icon.

A game with a casino-style minigame

Look for the Australian classification and whether the advice identifies simulated gambling. Australian simulated gambling has a minimum R 18+ classification, which is a legally restricted result.

Quick reference for parents and players

Question Best source to consult Why it matters
What is the Australian age category? National Classification Database entry It identifies the local rating and consumer advice.
Is access legally restricted in Australia? Australian category definition Only MA 15+ and R 18+ are restricted; G, PG and M are advisory.
Why did the game receive that label? Australian consumer advice or ESRB/PEGI descriptors The text identifies the relevant content or feature.
Does the game include online or purchase features? Interactive elements and Australian game advice These notices address communication, spending and chance mechanics.
Can my child launch it? Device parental controls plus local rules Classification informs the decision; settings enforce the household choice.

What to remember when labels disagree

A disagreement between Australian, ESRB and PEGI labels is not automatically an error. The systems may apply different criteria, describe different legal environments, receive different release information or classify an interactive feature differently. The reliable comparison is not the logo alone; it is the local category, the descriptors and the access rules attached to that category.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For Australian players, start with the National Classification Database entry for the exact title and edition. For an ESRB listing, read the category, content descriptors and interactive elements together. For a PEGI listing, read the number and its descriptors, then avoid treating the ALRC’s indicative table as a binding conversion. This approach answers the practical question—what is this game and who should access it—without pretending that three regional systems are interchangeable.
