Audible sound can guide patterns in certain chemical systems that are far from equilibrium—but it does not act as a universal chemical switch. In experiments reported in 2020, sound-induced vibrations moved liquid and influenced how atmospheric gases dissolved into it. That transport helped organize redox or pH patterns and transient molecular assemblies in space and time.
What the researchers found
In a 2020 paper in Nature Chemistry, Ilha Hwang and colleagues demonstrated that audible sound could control spatiotemporal patterns in aqueous out-of-equilibrium systems. These are systems that change over time rather than settling into a static equilibrium. The team also reported predictable organization of transiently formed supramolecular aggregates—temporary groupings of molecules—in response to sound.

The result matters because these systems can otherwise produce irregular patterns. In the reported comparisons, patterns formed more regularly with the relevant sound input; without it, patterns were random. The study is not evidence that sound can direct any chemical reaction. The original paper appeared in Nature Chemistry 12, pages 808–813, and was published August 10, 2020.

The proposed mechanism is indirect. The sound vibrates the liquid, changing how atmospheric gases such as oxygen and carbon dioxide enter and move through the water. As those gases dissolve, different regions of the solution can develop different redox properties or pH values. Those local differences help create visible patterns and influence the organization of transient aggregates.

In this setting, sound is not supplying enough energy to break or form chemical bonds directly. Its influence comes through liquid motion and gas transport, rather than direct bond activation. Chemistry World’s account of the study describes this distinction and reports a narrow effective frequency range in the experiments.
What the experimental comparisons show
Sound versus no sound
The Institute for Basic Science describes an arrangement with a Petri dish on a loudspeaker. The researchers used low-frequency audible sound below 90 Hz, and the official account reports more regular patterns with sound than without the relevant input. Chemistry World gives 25–90 Hz as the effective range reported for the experiments. These are study-specific conditions, not a universal frequency setting for every liquid or apparatus.

Exposure to air versus inert atmosphere
A supplementary-video description for the paper reports no pattern under an inert atmosphere and a pattern after exposure to air. That comparison is consistent with atmospheric gases playing a key role in the mechanism: sound-driven motion can affect the delivery of gas to the liquid, but the gas itself must be available.
Disturbance and recovery
The researchers also reported recovery of a disturbed pattern while sound continued. This is a behavior of the particular system they studied, not evidence that chemical reactions in general can repair themselves.

What “controlling a chemical reaction with sound” does—and does not—mean
The phrase can suggest that sound directly switches chemical bonds on or off. That is not what this study establishes. It shows a way to influence the spatial and temporal organization of certain aqueous, out-of-equilibrium systems by changing fluid and gas transport.
- Demonstrated: audible sound guided patterns with distinct redox behavior or pH in the studied systems, and organized transient supramolecular aggregates.
- Not demonstrated: a general method for controlling arbitrary reactions, direct sound-induced bond chemistry, or a reliable home experiment using any speaker.
- Still prospective: possible use in materials science or biology. These are research directions, not established industrial or medical applications.
The Institute for Basic Science quoted supervising research leader Kimoon Kim saying, “This is the first study to show that it is possible to control and visualize chemical reactions using audible sound.” That is Kim’s characterization of the study’s novelty, not a separate consensus statement. Its official summary, “Seeing chemical reactions with music,” describes the setup and findings.

Could you reproduce it with a speaker at home?
The published accounts describe a loudspeaker as part of the experimental setup, but they do not validate a consumer speaker, provide a home-replication protocol, or establish that changing a speaker’s frequency alone will reproduce the patterns. The observed range depends on the studied setup and conditions. Without matching the chemistry, liquid geometry, atmosphere, and sound-driven motion, the study does not support treating a speaker as a plug-and-play reaction-control device.
