The two amounts on your bill are different obligations
AT&T phone financing and promotional credits are related, but they are not the same thing.
Installment payments are the device debt
Your device installment agreement sets a scheduled payment amount and a term. AT&T’s published device terms describe the cited agreement as a “0% APR installment transaction,” with no finance charge, interest, origination fee or other cost connected with that agreement. Scheduled installments remain your responsibility if the associated wireless line is canceled. The balance you see in your account is the amount still owed under that agreement, not the value of future promotional discounts.
Promotional credits are conditional discounts
A promotion may reduce the monthly device charge by applying a credit during the installment term. AT&T describes many offers as equal monthly discounts over a term often lasting 36 months, but 36 months is a common example, not a universal rule. Eligibility can depend on the device, qualifying service, account standing, trade-in requirements and keeping the device and line on the specified agreement. The individual offer’s legal terms take priority over general billing guidance.
A credit does not create a payoff fund that AT&T must apply after you leave. It is a discount earned each month while the promotion’s conditions remain satisfied.

What happens when you cancel the line
AT&T’s cancellation support page states: “The remaining unpaid installment balance is due immediately when you cancel the line linked to the plan.” That amount is placed on the final bill. Under the cited promotional terms, canceling wireless service also ends the associated credits. You therefore can face two simultaneous changes: the remaining device installments accelerate onto the final bill, and the monthly discounts that would have reduced later installments stop. Do not treat the amount or conditions of one advertised offer as universal; your own promotion governs.
Cancellation does not necessarily prorate the service period
AT&T says a mid-cycle cancellation does not prorate the service period. In other words, ending service partway through a billing cycle does not automatically produce a proportional service refund. This service-billing rule is separate from the device payoff and from any credit eligibility decision.

Why paying off early or upgrading can remove credits
AT&T’s billing help says customers generally need to retain service and keep the same device on the installment plan for the full promotional term to continue receiving monthly discounts. If you pay off the device early or upgrade, remaining credits may stop. AT&T’s trade-in terms give the same warning for promotional trade-in credits. Review AT&T billing support and the AT&T Trade-In terms before making either change.

“May stop” is intentional. Some offers define a specific trigger, while others impose additional conditions. An early payoff can eliminate the installment plan that the credit was designed to offset; an upgrade can replace the qualifying device or alter the line’s eligibility. Neither action should be assumed to preserve the remaining credits.
How credits appear, and how long they can take
Credit timing is not identical across all AT&T offers.

Compare the three choices before you act

These are decision paths, not a guarantee of a particular dollar outcome. The installment agreement, promotion and account history determine your result.
A practical checklist before cancellation or payoff
- Identify the exact line and device. Make sure you are reviewing the line linked to the installment plan; a multi-line account can show several devices and discounts.
- Record the unpaid installment balance. Use the account’s device details and retain the statement showing the balance. Do not estimate it from the original retail price.
- Open the promotion’s legal terms. Look for the required service, device, account standing, trade-in acceptance, installment term and events that end credits.
- Check whether a payoff or upgrade is a qualifying event. AT&T’s general guidance warns that either action may stop discounts, even when service remains active.
- Review the billing center. Go to Last bill and View discounts to see which credits have posted and whether a credit is still pending.
- Ask AT&T for an account-specific explanation before submitting the change. Request the current installment payoff, the credit end date under your offer and how each amount will appear on the final bill. General web pages cannot calculate those figures for you.
- Keep documentation. Save the offer, installment agreement, recent bills, trade-in acceptance information and any case or chat reference connected with the change.
What to check after the final bill arrives
Confirm the accelerated device amount
The final bill should show the unpaid installment balance for the canceled line. Compare that amount with the balance you recorded before cancellation. A difference can reflect a payment that posted, a credit already applied or another account transaction; ask AT&T to identify the line item rather than assuming it is a new fee.
Separate service charges from the device payoff
Because AT&T does not automatically prorate a mid-cycle service period, review service charges independently from the device amount. A service-period charge and an accelerated installment balance are different entries with different rules.

A credit that posted before cancellation is different from a future credit that would have required continued eligibility. Review the statements leading up to the final bill and the promotion’s language about delayed or catch-up credits. Do not assume a later credit will arrive after the line is closed unless your offer says it will.
If a credit is missing or late
- Wait through the stated window. General guidance allows up to two bill periods; trade-in promotions may take two or three cycles. An offer that promises credits within three bills has its own schedule.
- Verify the qualifying line. On a multi-line account, the discount may be attached to a different number than the one you first opened.
- Confirm the device and service requirements. A plan change, early payoff, upgrade, account-status issue or device change can affect eligibility under the offer.
- Check for catch-up credits. Some offer terms apply accumulated credits after the first credit posts, but that feature is offer-specific.
- Contact AT&T with records. Provide the promotion name, order date, trade-in status, billing cycles elapsed and the line receiving the offer. Ask for a written explanation of approval, denial or pending status.
Important limits on public offer information
Published pages explain general mechanics, but they do not reveal an individual account’s payoff. The same is true of advertised credit amounts and schedules: an offer page may describe one promotion while your account is enrolled in another. AT&T’s offer-specific legal terms illustrate why you must read the exact document tied to your transaction.
Do not calculate your expected final bill by multiplying a promotional credit by the number of months left. That arithmetic ignores whether the offer ends at cancellation, whether credits were delayed, and whether an early payoff or upgrade changes eligibility.
