CuCrP₂S₆ crystals produced a zero-bias photocurrent along one crystal axis from 15 K through room temperature, even when their time-averaged room-temperature structure was centrosymmetric. Researchers propose that moving copper ions create short-lived local regions that break symmetry, allowing the light-driven response to persist. The result points to a materials-design idea—not a demonstrated gain in commercial solar-cell efficiency.
How can a material generate photocurrent without a p–n junction?
The bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE) is the generation of photocurrent in a material without relying on a conventional p–n junction. In the 2026 study, Ryoga Murata and colleagues investigated this effect in bulk single crystals of CuCrP₂S₆, abbreviated CCPS. Their paper appeared in Advanced Functional Materials on 9 August 2026: “Unusual Temperature-Enhanced Bulk Photovoltaic Effect Beyond the Centrosymmetric Phase in CuCrP₂S₆ van der Waals Crystals”.

The researchers measured current along the crystal’s in-plane a- and b-axes while varying temperature, light polarization, power and wavelength, and comparing silver and platinum electrodes. They observed the zero-bias response along the a-axis, but not the b-axis, throughout the measured range of 15–300 K. Changing electrode material affected the absolute photocurrent, while the response’s direction and temperature behavior remained qualitatively consistent.

Why is the room-temperature result surprising?
Inversion symmetry matters because the conventional BPVE response under discussion is expected to vanish in a centrosymmetric structure. CCPS changes its crystal structure as it warms, however, and its average structure does not tell the whole story.

At low temperature: a non-centrosymmetric phase
At lower temperatures, CCPS has a non-centrosymmetric Pc structure. This lacks inversion symmetry, so a photocurrent in the material is consistent with the usual symmetry-based expectation.
At higher temperature: a centrosymmetric average
As the material warms, copper ions become mobile. The structural evolution includes a dynamically disordered interval described as roughly 145–190 K. At room temperature, the time-averaged structure is centrosymmetric C2/c. Yet the measured a-axis photocurrent persists through this phase and, according to an Institute of Science Tokyo release published by Phys.org, its magnitude at room temperature was approximately 1.5 times that in the low-temperature phase. That is a comparison of photocurrent in the studied crystals—not a solar-cell conversion-efficiency measurement.

How could copper-ion motion sustain the effect?
The authors propose that mobile copper ions create fluctuating local configurations that temporarily break symmetry and form nanoscale polar regions. Although averaging over time restores the centrosymmetric C2/c structure, the electronic response to light occurs on femtosecond timescales, while the relevant lattice fluctuations occur on picosecond or longer timescales. In the researchers’ interpretation, electrons can therefore respond to an instantaneous local arrangement before longer-term averaging erases its asymmetry.

This is the authors’ proposed explanation for the observed response, not a claim that the average room-temperature crystal structure is non-centrosymmetric. Their abstract describes instantaneous local symmetry breaking and nanoscale polar clusters as capable of sustaining and enhancing shift-current responses in a nominally centrosymmetric phase.

What does “beyond conventional limits” mean here?
The finding concerns a physical mechanism that may guide future optoelectronic and energy-harvesting materials: atomic motion could matter alongside a material’s average, static crystal structure. It does not show that a commercial solar panel has exceeded the Shockley–Queisser limit or that CCPS has delivered a measured improvement in solar-cell efficiency. The approximately 33% theoretical limit for an ideal single-junction silicon cell, mentioned as background in the institutional release, is not an experimental result from the CCPS study.
The experiment was performed on bulk single crystals of one compound. It does not establish that conventional silicon panels, other photovoltaic materials, or finished devices exhibit the same behavior. Turning this crystal-scale photocurrent into a practical photovoltaic technology would require device research beyond the reported measurements.

What the study establishes—and what it does not
- Established: a zero-bias photocurrent along CCPS’s a-axis across the measured 15–300 K range, including the room-temperature phase with a centrosymmetric average structure.
- Proposed explanation: dynamic copper-ion motion produces transient local symmetry breaking that lets the light-driven response persist.
- Not established: a commercial product, a solar-cell efficiency improvement, or a breakthrough showing operating panels have surpassed a conventional efficiency limit.
