As its light travels toward Earth, it passes through gas in the Milky Way’s halo or through material between galaxies. Atoms and ions in that foreground gas remove light at specific wavelengths, leaving absorption lines in the background object’s spectrum. Astronomers analyze those lines to determine the gas’s temperature, composition, ionization, density and motion.
The distant galaxy is not physically probing the Milky Way, and astronomers do not obtain an external photograph of our Galaxy this way. They measure the foreground material along selected lines of sight. By combining many background sources with emission observations and data at several wavelengths, they assemble a constrained picture of the Milky Way’s circumgalactic medium (CGM), the diffuse gas surrounding the Galaxy.

What the distant object contributes: a measurable backlight
Why quasars and bright galaxies are useful
Quasars are extremely luminous active galactic nuclei. Their brightness allows a telescope to collect a high-quality spectrum even after the light has crossed enormous distances. NASA astrophysicist Camilla Pacifici described a quasar as “the perfect object in the distant universe” because it is luminous enough to be seen very well. Bright ordinary galaxies can also serve as background sources when their spectra are sufficiently strong.

The information about the Milky Way comes from changes imposed on that light on its journey to Earth. A quasar behind the Galactic halo is therefore analogous to a lamp shining through fog: the lamp reveals the fog by the way the fog alters the light, not because the lamp is part of the fog.

Absorption lines are fingerprints of foreground gas
Each element and ion absorbs photons at characteristic wavelengths. Hydrogen, oxygen, carbon, silicon and other species therefore leave distinctive features in a spectrum. The observed wavelength is compared with the laboratory wavelength. A shift indicates the absorber’s motion along the line of sight, while the line’s strength and shape contain information about the amount of absorbing material and its velocity structure.
This is an absorption measurement: the gas in front of the source is the target. The background quasar or galaxy itself may be thousands or billions of light-years away and is not being measured as a component of the Milky Way. Some absorbers instead belong to intergalactic space or to an unrelated foreground galaxy, so every detection needs an association analysis.
How an absorption observation is carried out
- Select a background source. Astronomers choose a bright quasar or galaxy whose line of sight passes through the halo region or another structure of interest. The source must be bright enough for the planned instrument and wavelength range.
- Obtain a spectrum. A spectrograph spreads the incoming light by wavelength. Ultraviolet, optical, and X-ray instruments reveal different ions and temperature phases. Calibration establishes the source’s unabsorbed continuum as accurately as possible.
- Identify absorption features. The spectrum is searched for groups of lines at mutually consistent redshifts. Matching several transitions from the same ion or element helps distinguish real absorption from noise and from unrelated features intrinsic to the quasar.
- Infer physical conditions. Wavelength gives a line-of-sight velocity after the absorber’s redshift is determined. Line strength, saturation behavior and ratios between ions constrain column density, ionization and, with models, temperature and density. The result is a model-dependent estimate rather than a direct photograph or a single unprocessed measurement.
- Associate the absorber with a foreground system. Astronomers search for galaxies near the sightline and compare their positions, distances and redshifts with the absorber. This step tests whether the gas plausibly belongs to a particular halo, to a group environment, or to the wider intergalactic medium.
- Combine sightlines and other data. A single spectrum samples a narrow pencil-beam path. Many background sources at different angular positions, together with emission maps and observations in other wavelength bands, are required to infer larger-scale halo structure.
What astronomers read from the spectrum
| Spectral evidence | What it can constrain | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Observed wavelength or redshift of a line | Line-of-sight velocity and the absorber’s cosmological distance relative to candidate galaxies | Several systems can overlap in one spectrum; association requires positional and environmental evidence. |
| Equivalent width and line depth | Amount of absorbing material, expressed through a modeled column density | Saturated lines can hide additional gas, so multiple transitions are valuable. |
| Ratios among ions | Ionization state and, with photoionization or collisional models, estimates of density and temperature | Results depend on the radiation field and physical assumptions used in the model. |
| Line width and multiple velocity components | Thermal broadening, turbulence and bulk motions within the absorbing gas | Instrumental resolution must be separated from the intrinsic width. |
| Presence or absence of elements such as oxygen, carbon or silicon | Metallicity and clues about enrichment by earlier generations of stars | Non-detections may reflect limited sensitivity rather than true absence. |
The National Academies’ astronomy survey for the 2020s identifies absorption spectroscopy as a way to constrain circumgalactic and intergalactic gas density, ionization, metallicity and velocity fields. These are usually inferred jointly: no single line independently supplies every property.

Quasars behind the Galactic halo
When a background quasar is observed through the Milky Way’s halo, absorption lines reveal gas along that particular path. The sightline can pass through relatively cool material, warmer ionized gas or hotter phases detectable at different wavelengths. By observing quasars in many directions, astronomers test whether gas properties change with Galactic latitude, distance from the disk or proximity to known structures.

The measurement is still one-dimensional along each sightline. It does not by itself provide the halo’s complete boundary, total mass or three-dimensional geometry. Distances to the absorbing gas are often constrained indirectly through velocity, ionization models and comparison with known Galactic structures.
Why the circumgalactic medium matters
The CGM is the extended reservoir between a galaxy’s visible disk and intergalactic space. It can contain material expelled by stars and black holes, gas falling inward, and recycled matter that may later form stars. Because much of it is diffuse and faint, it is often easier to detect through absorption against a bright background source than through its own glow.
Andromeda as a comparison, not an external photograph
For another perspective, astronomers observe background quasars whose light passes near or through Andromeda (M31). Hubble observations used such quasars to study M31’s dark gas halo. NASA’s 2023 educational summary reported that Andromeda’s halo extends about one million light-years, is roughly six times larger and a thousand times more massive than earlier estimates, and contains a mass about half that of Andromeda’s stars.
Those figures describe Andromeda’s halo, not a direct measurement of the Milky Way’s total CGM mass. Project AMIGA, reported by NASA and the Space Telescope Science Institute in 2020, used comparisons with M31 to infer that the Milky Way likely has a CGM spanning approximately 104 to 105.5 kelvin and extending on a similar scale. The inference suggests that the two halos may overlap; it is not an image of the Milky Way viewed from outside.

How astronomers decide which galaxy owns an absorber
Position on the sky is only the first test
A gas cloud may appear close to a galaxy in projection while actually lying much nearer, farther away or in a shared group environment. Astronomers therefore compare the absorber’s redshift with the redshifts of candidate galaxies and evaluate the impact parameter, the projected distance between the sightline and the galaxy.
Distance, velocity and environment must agree
A plausible halo association requires more than one matching number. The absorber’s velocity should be compatible with the galaxy or group, and its ionization and temperature should make physical sense for that environment. Nearby galaxies, filaments and intragroup gas can all contribute. NASA’s missing-mass investigations illustrate this process by locating galaxies at the same distance as warm gas detected in ultraviolet data before searching for corresponding X-ray absorption.
Statistical samples reveal patterns
One sightline can establish that gas exists along one path. A survey of many quasars can reveal how detection rates and line strengths vary with radius, galaxy mass, star-formation activity and direction. Statistical trends are what turn isolated absorption systems into constraints on a population of halos.

| Approach | Typical information | Strength | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ultraviolet absorption | Cooler to warm ionized gas and ions such as hydrogen, oxygen or silicon | Very sensitive to diffuse gas along a bright background sightline | Samples narrow paths and requires a suitable ultraviolet-bright source. |
| X-ray absorption | Hotter, highly ionized gas through lines from heavy ions | Probes phases that may contain substantial baryonic mass but emit weakly | Lines are faint and demand high sensitivity and careful modeling. |
| Emission measurements | Gas that is sufficiently dense or hot to radiate detectably; can provide projected spatial information | Can show extended structures without a background source | Diffuse gas may be too faint, and emission brightness depends strongly on density. |
| Multiwavelength combination | Joint constraints on temperature, ionization, metallicity, density and kinematics | Reduces the chance that one invisible phase dominates the interpretation | Different instruments, resolutions and models must be reconciled. |
The National Academies survey emphasizes a multiscale, multiwavelength strategy. Ultraviolet detections can identify warm material, while X-ray searches test hotter phases; galaxy catalogs provide the spatial and distance context. Emission data add information that absorption alone cannot supply.

Reliable conclusions from a well-modeled line
- Gas exists somewhere along the measured sightline.
- Detected ions identify elements and ionization stages present above the instrument’s sensitivity.
- Redshift and line profiles provide line-of-sight velocity information.
- With appropriate models, line ratios constrain temperature, ionization, density and metallicity.
Claims that require a larger data set
- The total mass of the Milky Way’s CGM.
- The halo’s complete three-dimensional shape and boundary.
- The fraction of gas in every temperature phase.
- A definitive assignment of every absorber to the Milky Way rather than intergalactic or unrelated foreground material.
A single quasar spectrum cannot establish the global geometry or mass budget. Instrument sensitivity, spectral resolution, uncertain ionizing radiation fields and incomplete sightline coverage all affect the inference. Those limitations are why surveys combine many background sources and independent observing techniques.
A worked example: tracing otherwise hidden warm gas
NASA’s discussion of the universe’s missing matter describes a representative chain of evidence. Ultraviolet observations first reveal absorption from warm gas. Galaxies located at the same distance as those absorbing regions are then identified. Finally, X-ray absorption from hotter ions is sought along corresponding sightlines. Each step answers a different question: what gas is present, where it may be located, and whether another temperature phase exists in the same large-scale structure.

Common misconceptions
“Astronomers look through Andromeda to photograph the Milky Way.”
No. Andromeda is used as a comparison target. Its halo is measured with background sources, and those results help test whether the Milky Way may have a similar CGM.
“The quasar is the gas being studied.”
No. The quasar provides the light. Absorption imprinted by intervening atoms and ions is the measurement of interest.
“A line near a galaxy proves the gas belongs to that galaxy.”
No. Projection can be misleading. Redshift, velocity, distance, environment and compatible physical conditions are needed to support an association.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →“An absorption spectrum is a map.”
It is a measurement along one narrow path. A map-like picture emerges only after many sightlines and complementary emission observations are combined.
Why this technique changes our view of the Galaxy
The Milky Way’s bright disk is only one component of the Galaxy. Much of its surrounding gas is too diffuse to see directly, yet that gas records how matter enters, leaves and circulates through a galactic system. Distant quasars and galaxies make the material detectable by turning otherwise invisible atoms into wavelength-specific fingerprints.
Absorption spectroscopy therefore provides a powerful but deliberately limited view: a set of precise one-dimensional probes. Careful foreground-galaxy identification, observations across ultraviolet and X-ray bands, and comparisons with systems such as Andromeda allow astronomers to infer the CGM’s physical state without claiming a picture or a total mass that the data do not establish.
