They observe angles, redshifts, spectra, images, gas and motions, then infer a physical size from distance and a defined boundary. They infer mass from the way gravity moves galaxies and stars, bends background light, heats intracluster gas and alters the cosmic microwave background. Because each method sees a different tracer and relies on different assumptions, a credible result states the radius, boundary convention and estimator used.
What “size” means in astronomy
A telescope records an object’s position and angular extent on the sky. That apparent size is not yet a physical diameter. A small nearby galaxy can span the same angle as a much larger distant one. Astronomers first estimate distance, then convert angular extent into a projected physical length. For a small angle measured in radians, the relationship is approximately physical size = angular size × distance. For larger angles, the calculation uses the appropriate angular-diameter-distance relation from the adopted cosmological model.

Redshift is a distance clue, not a tape measure
Galaxy and cluster spectra contain redshift, the displacement of spectral features caused largely by cosmic expansion. A cosmological framework converts redshift into a distance. That conversion depends on assumptions such as the expansion history and matter content of the universe, so two analyses using different cosmological parameters can obtain slightly different physical scales from the same angular observation.

There is usually no sharp edge
Galaxies fade gradually into their surroundings, and clusters sit in extended dark-matter halos and gas atmospheres. Instead of a visible rim, a paper chooses a reproducible boundary. Common choices include a virial radius, intended to describe the region that has reached approximate dynamical equilibrium, and an overdensity radius such as R500, where the mean enclosed density is 500 times the universe’s critical density at that redshift.
The boundary is part of the measurement. A mass inside R500 is not automatically comparable with a mass inside a virial radius or another aperture. The NASA Technical Reports Server abstract for the Abell 1995 analysis, for example, specifies a mass evaluated at the radius where the overdensity is 500 times the critical density. Omitting that convention can make two values appear inconsistent when they refer to different regions.
Useful distance units
Intergalactic distances are often expressed in megaparsecs (Mpc). NASA’s glossary defines 1 Mpc as 1 million parsecs, or 3.26 million light-years. The unit is convenient for converting angular measurements and for describing cluster separations, filaments and voids.
How astronomers infer mass
Total mass is inferred through gravity. Stars, galaxies, gas and dark matter all contribute to the gravitational field, even when some of that matter emits no detectable light. The observable may be a velocity, an image distortion, an X-ray spectrum or a change in the cosmic microwave background; a physical model connects that signal to a mass profile.
Stellar and galaxy-member dynamics
In a galaxy, the speeds and orbital directions of stars reveal the depth of its gravitational potential. Spectrographs measure Doppler shifts in stellar absorption lines, producing a velocity distribution. Faster motions generally require more enclosed mass to keep the system bound, although the inference depends on the orbit distribution, inclination and assumed shape of the mass profile.

For a cluster, astronomers measure redshifts of many member galaxies. The spread of their line-of-sight velocities, called the velocity dispersion, provides a dynamical mass estimate. Interloping foreground or background galaxies, recent mergers and departures from equilibrium can bias the result. A sufficiently large member sample and a clearly stated aperture are therefore important.
Gravitational lensing: weighing invisible matter
Gravity bends light. A cluster between Earth and a more distant galaxy can produce weak distortions across many background images or dramatic strong-lensing arcs and Einstein rings. The amount and pattern of distortion depend on the projected mass between observer and source, including dark matter that does not shine.
Weak lensing statistically stretches background galaxies by a small amount, allowing astronomers to reconstruct a two-dimensional mass map over a wide area. Strong lensing uses multiple images, arcs or rings near the densest central region and can constrain the inner mass distribution. Lensing measures projected mass, so analyses model the three-dimensional profile and account for unrelated structures along the line of sight when quoting a mass within a radius.
ESA/Hubble describes cluster lensing as a way to “weigh” clusters and map unseen dark matter. In the galaxy ESO 325-G004, astronomers compared stellar-velocity measurements with an Einstein-ring lensing measurement. Agreement between these independent gravity probes is more informative than either estimate alone because the methods have different failure modes.
“When we first observed the galaxy cluster Abell 2218 with Hubble in 1995 we mainly aimed at studying the cluster and its galaxies. But we got a surprise. The images showed dozens and dozens of gravitationally lensed arcs. When we showed these ultrasharp images to our colleagues they could immediately see the importance of using gravitational lensing as a cosmological tool.”

X-ray measurements of hot intracluster gas
Clusters contain a tenuous plasma heated to millions of degrees. This intracluster medium emits X-rays through processes such as thermal bremsstrahlung and line emission. An X-ray telescope measures the surface brightness and spectrum, from which researchers estimate the gas density and temperature as functions of radius.
If the gas is close to hydrostatic equilibrium, its pressure gradient balances gravity. Applying that equation gives an inferred total mass profile, not merely the mass of the luminous gas. Mergers, turbulence, magnetic fields and cosmic rays can provide additional pressure support, causing a hydrostatic estimate to differ from a true gravitational mass. The assumed temperature profile and the chosen outer radius must be reported.
The thermal Sunyaev–Zel’dovich effect
Microwave photons from the cosmic microwave background gain energy when they scatter from hot electrons in cluster gas. This produces a characteristic spectral distortion known as the thermal Sunyaev–Zel’dovich (SZ) effect. The signal is closely related to integrated electron pressure along the line of sight, so it traces the hot gas rather than directly counting galaxies or stars.
SZ observations are especially useful for finding clusters at substantial redshift because the surface-brightness signal does not fade with distance in the same way ordinary emitted light does. Turning an SZ signal into mass requires a calibrated relation, usually established with simulations and clusters whose masses have been estimated by lensing or dynamics. The APEX-SZ project documentation describes this complementary, survey-friendly role; the page was last updated in 2009, so its physical explanation should not be read as a statement about current instrument operations.

Combining tracers
Galaxy velocities, lensing, X-rays and SZ measurements do not answer exactly the same question. Velocities respond to the gravitational potential, lensing to projected total mass, X-rays to gas density and temperature, and SZ to integrated gas pressure. Researchers compare them to test assumptions, identify mergers or non-equilibrium gas, and improve calibration. The available studies establish that these are complementary estimators, but they do not provide one universal error percentage that applies to every cluster or method.
A practical measurement workflow
- Define the structure. Decide whether the target is a galaxy, group, cluster, filament, wall, void or supercluster. State the selection rule and redshift range.
- Collect positions and spectra. Imaging supplies angular coordinates and apparent extent; spectroscopy supplies redshifts and, where possible, stellar or galaxy-member velocities.
- Adopt a distance model. Convert redshift to an angular-diameter distance using a specified cosmological framework. Record the parameters because they affect the physical scale.
- Choose a boundary. Select a virial radius, an overdensity radius such as R500, a photometric aperture or a classification rule for a web feature. Do not mix values defined at different boundaries.
- Convert angles to projected lengths. Apply the distance relation and label the result as projected unless depth has been modeled.
- Measure one or more gravity tracers. Obtain velocity dispersions, weak or strong lensing, X-ray profiles and/or SZ pressure measurements, depending on the target and available data.
- Fit a mass model. Infer a density or mass profile, propagate measurement errors and include assumptions such as equilibrium, spherical symmetry or a calibrated SZ–mass relation.
- Cross-check and report conventions. Compare independent estimators, explain discrepancies and quote the radius, diameter-versus-radius distinction, redshift and cosmology with every headline number.
What a cluster mass number actually includes
A visible-light inventory counts stars and galaxies, but a cluster’s total gravitating mass also includes dark matter and the intracluster gas. Lensing and galaxy dynamics respond to the combined gravitational field. X-ray and SZ observations primarily reveal the gas component and infer the total through a physical model. Consequently, “the mass of the galaxies” and “the total cluster mass” are different quantities.
Mass profiles also grow with radius. A value inside a small central aperture excludes material farther out; a value inside a virial radius includes more of the halo. A quoted mass without its aperture is incomplete, even when the numerical value is precise.
Perseus: a concrete scale-and-mass example
NASA’s 2011 account of Suzaku observations of the Perseus cluster illustrates the method. Researchers used the density and temperature of its X-ray-emitting gas to infer a virial radius and the mass associated with that boundary. The report described Perseus as 11.6 million light-years across and containing more than 660 trillion times the Sun’s mass.

Those figures belong to that study’s virial-radius interpretation and are a historical case study, not universal values for clusters or a current all-sky measurement. The wording “across” refers to a diameter; a radius-based result is half that span only when the quoted shape and definition justify such a conversion. The study’s co-author Adam Mantz emphasized why the gas matters: “Understanding the content of normal matter in galaxy clusters is a key element for using these objects to study the evolution of the universe.”

Groups, clusters and the cosmic web are not interchangeable
Galaxy groups and clusters
Groups and clusters are collections of galaxies held together by mutual gravity. Their boundaries can be described dynamically or with an overdensity criterion. These are the systems for which velocity, lensing, X-ray and SZ mass estimators are most directly applicable.
Superclusters
Superclusters are broader associations of groups and clusters. NASA descriptions note that they are generally not gravitationally bound as a whole. Treating a supercluster as one object with a single virial mass would therefore misuse a cluster concept.
Filaments, walls and voids
Filaments and walls are patterns in the large-scale distribution of galaxies; voids are underdense regions. Their “size” depends on the catalog, smoothing scale, density threshold and classification algorithm used to map the cosmic web. There is no single edge independent of those choices.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →For the same reason, claims about the “largest structure in the universe” require a defined population and criterion. A structure can be largest by length, volume, membership, density contrast or another statistic, and those rankings need not agree.
Where distance-scale tools fit
Baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) leave a preferred separation in the clustering of galaxies. Because that feature acts as a standard ruler, BAO measurements test cosmic expansion and help calibrate distance scales. BAO is not a direct weighing technique for an individual cluster; it constrains the background geometry used when converting redshifts and angles into physical distances.
How to read a reported size or mass
- Check whether the number is a radius or diameter.
- Identify the boundary: virial, R500, another overdensity, photometric aperture or a web-classification rule.
- Ask whether the size is projected or modeled in three dimensions.
- Note the redshift and cosmological parameters used for the distance conversion.
- Identify the observable and tracer: velocities, lensing, X-rays or SZ.
- Read the assumptions, especially equilibrium, spherical symmetry and calibration relations.
- Look for method-specific uncertainty and systematic effects rather than applying a generic percentage.
- Compare only values defined at compatible radii and conventions.
The central idea is simple but easy to lose in a headline: astronomers infer dimensions from angular observations plus distance and a declared boundary, and infer mass from how matter and light respond to gravity. Multiple tracers make the inference testable, while explicit definitions make different studies genuinely comparable.
