They combine the planet’s orbit, the energy it receives from its star, its estimated size, evidence about its atmosphere, and the behavior of its planetary system. Spectroscopy can reveal gases, but even a molecule associated with life is only a clue until scientists test whether nonbiological processes could produce it and whether the planet’s surface, interior and environment are compatible with the interpretation.
What astronomers mean by “could support life”
“Habitable” is a conditional scientific description, not a synonym for inhabited, Earth-like or safe for humans. NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center Science and Exploration Education Center gives the standard working definition as a planet that “can sustain life for a significant period.” Based on the only inhabited world known, the basic requirements are liquid water, energy and nutrients. That framework describes life as we know it; it does not prove that every possible form of life must use exactly the same chemistry.

In practice, astronomers usually say that a world is potentially habitable when observations show that surface liquid water could exist under suitable conditions. The qualification matters. A planet may orbit in a region where water is physically possible yet have no atmosphere, no water, a runaway greenhouse climate, a frozen surface or atmospheric chemistry that makes the surface hostile. A habitable-zone designation identifies a candidate for further study, not a detection of life.
Step 1: Establish that the planet exists and measure its orbit
Transit observations
One of the most useful discovery methods is the transit. When a planet crosses in front of its star from Earth’s viewpoint, it blocks a small fraction of the star’s light. The depth and timing of repeated dips help establish the planet’s size relative to the star and its orbital period. The geometry is restrictive: only systems whose orbital plane is aligned closely enough with our line of sight produce observable transits, so many genuine planets never show this signal.

A transit also creates an opportunity for atmospheric work. During the crossing, a small amount of starlight passes through the edge of the planet’s atmosphere before reaching a telescope. The atmosphere can therefore be studied even though the planet itself is not spatially resolved.
Other orbital and planetary estimates
Astronomers combine the transit signal, the host star’s measured properties and, where available, other observations to estimate the planet’s radius, orbital distance and period. These values determine how much stellar energy reaches the top of the atmosphere. They also provide the baseline for judging whether a later atmospheric signal is physically plausible.
Step 2: Check the habitable-zone energy range
NASA Science defines the habitable zone as “the distance from a star at which liquid water could exist on orbiting planets’ surfaces.” The zone is an orbital screening concept: its location changes with the star’s luminosity and other stellar properties. A planet closer to a dim star can receive a similar energy supply to a planet farther from a bright star.

If it lies inside, water is physically possible, but the result remains conditional on the atmosphere and the planet’s climate.

Why distance alone fails
- Atmospheric pressure and composition: Greenhouse gases can warm a surface; a thin or absent atmosphere can leave it cold even when the orbit receives moderate energy.
- Clouds and circulation: Clouds reflect starlight, while atmospheric circulation moves heat between the day and night sides or between the equator and poles.
- Planetary history: Impacts, geological activity and the loss or replenishment of an atmosphere can change conditions over time.
- Stellar variability: Flares and high-energy radiation can alter atmospheric chemistry and accelerate atmospheric escape.
For these reasons, “in the habitable zone” should be read as “worth investigating for the possibility of surface liquid water,” not “has liquid water.”
Step 3: Use size and mass to estimate what kind of world it is
Radius and mass help astronomers distinguish broad classes of planets. A relatively small radius is consistent with a rocky-sized candidate, while a much larger world may have a deep gaseous envelope. If both mass and radius are available, their combination gives an average density that can constrain interior models.
These measurements are clues rather than a compositional verdict. Two planets with similar sizes can have different mixtures of rock, metal, water and gas. A planet with an Earth-like radius can still possess a very different atmosphere or surface pressure, and a larger planet can have an atmosphere whose lower layers hide any solid or liquid surface. Size therefore narrows the possibilities; it does not establish that a planet is an Earth analogue.
Step 4: Characterize the atmosphere with spectroscopy
How a transit spectrum is made
Different molecules absorb particular wavelengths of light. Astronomers measure the star’s spectrum during a transit and compare it with measurements outside transit. Wavelengths absorbed by gases in the planet’s atmospheric limb produce small changes in the apparent transit depth. Repeating observations across wavelengths can reveal or constrain molecules such as water vapor, carbon dioxide or methane, depending on the planet, star and telescope sensitivity.

The James Webb Space Telescope is designed to study exoplanet atmospheres. NASA describes its observations as a way to analyze atmospheric composition and obtain clues about habitability and possible biosignatures. That capability does not mean Webb, or any other telescope, has established life on an exoplanet.
Why a spectrum is not a simple inventory
- Clouds and hazes can mute molecular features or make an atmosphere appear less transparent than it is.
- Temperature and pressure structure affect the strength and shape of absorption lines.
- Stellar contamination can mimic or obscure a planetary feature when the star has spots, faculae or changing activity.
- Signal size is small, so instrument noise, limited observing time and data-analysis choices contribute uncertainty.
- Model dependence means that several combinations of gases, clouds and temperatures can fit the same data.
A responsible result therefore states which molecules are detected or constrained, the uncertainty of the measurement and which atmospheric models remain possible. It should not present a tentative feature as a complete, direct inventory.
Step 5: Test whether a possible biosignature has nonbiological explanations
A biosignature is not simply a gas that can be made by life. It is an observed feature whose biological explanation remains plausible after environmental alternatives are considered. NASA’s astrobiology work emphasizes that interpretation requires context and explicit attention to both false positives and false negatives.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFalse positives
A false positive occurs when a nonliving process produces a signal that resembles a biological one. Photochemistry driven by stellar ultraviolet radiation, volcanic or geological reactions, atmospheric escape and interactions between gases can all alter abundances. The same molecule can have different meanings in different mixtures and under different stellar conditions. Astronomers therefore examine the host star’s spectrum and activity, the planet’s temperature and pressure, companion gases, and plausible surface or interior sources before assigning biological significance.

False negatives
A false negative occurs when life is present but the available observations fail to reveal a recognizable signal. Clouds may hide gases, the relevant molecule may be below a telescope’s detection threshold, or an ecosystem may not produce a globally detectable atmospheric change. A nondetection is consequently a constraint on the models tested, not proof that a planet is sterile.
Context is the decision point
Scientists seek a coherent set of observations: an atmosphere that can persist, chemistry that is difficult to explain without biology, and a planetary environment in which the proposed biological process is physically credible. They also ask whether another explanation fits the data better. No single atmospheric molecule can bypass those tests.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How the host star changes the assessment
The star supplies the energy that drives climate and atmospheric chemistry, but it can also threaten atmospheric survival. Astronomers consider the star’s type, luminosity, age and activity, including flares and high-energy radiation. Persistent activity can change the chemical pathways that produce or destroy gases and can contribute to atmospheric loss. The same planet may therefore have a different habitability outlook around a quiet star than around an otherwise similar but highly active star.
Stellar activity also affects measurement quality. Starspots and other surface features can imprint wavelength-dependent signals that resemble a planetary atmosphere. Observing the star over time and modeling its variability helps separate stellar effects from the much smaller planetary signal.

Compare candidate worlds on the same dimensions
There is no single validated score that ranks every exoplanet by its probability of hosting life. A disciplined comparison keeps the evidence categories separate:
| Dimension | What astronomers examine | What it can and cannot show |
|---|---|---|
| Orbit and received energy | Orbital distance, period, host-star luminosity and estimated incident flux | Whether surface liquid water is physically plausible under suitable conditions; it does not prove water or an atmosphere |
| Size and broad composition | Radius, mass when available, and density or interior-model constraints | Whether a rocky-sized or gas-rich interpretation is plausible; it does not establish an Earth-like surface |
| Atmosphere | Transit or other spectra, molecular absorption, clouds and temperature-pressure models | Which gases may be present or absent within uncertainty; it does not by itself identify life |
| Host-star environment | Stellar type, activity, radiation and variability | How climate, atmospheric retention and signal interpretation may be affected |
| Evidence quality and alternatives | Signal strength, repeatability, model degeneracy, false-positive and false-negative scenarios | How convincing an interpretation is; it does not create a probability of life unless a validated statistical model supports one |
Keeping these axes distinct prevents a strong result in one category from being mistaken for confirmation in another. For example, an excellent transit measurement can establish an orbit while leaving the atmosphere unknown.
Example: what K2-18 b does—and does not—demonstrate
NASA’s 2025 Webb overview describes K2-18 b as 8.6 times as massive as Earth and about 120 light-years away. The example illustrates why atmospheric observations attract attention: Webb can analyze a distant planet’s atmosphere for clues about its environment and possible habitability.
Those facts do not establish that K2-18 b is inhabited, that it has a surface ocean or that its atmosphere has a biological origin. NASA cautions that determining life from an atmosphere alone also requires knowledge of the planet’s surface, interior and environment. Any interpretation must still address atmospheric structure, stellar context, alternative chemistry and the limits of the observations.
A practical evidence ladder
- Planet confirmed: Repeated observations establish a planetary signal and constrain its orbit.
- Energy assessed: The host star and orbit indicate how much stellar energy arrives at the planet.
- World type narrowed: Radius, mass and density models constrain whether a rocky-sized or gas-rich world is plausible.
- Atmosphere measured: Spectra reveal or limit molecular features, with clouds, stellar contamination and uncertainty reported.
- Environment checked: Surface, interior, stellar activity and atmospheric persistence are considered together.
- Biosignature tested: Biological and nonbiological explanations are compared, including possible false positives and false negatives.
- Claims calibrated: The conclusion remains “potentially habitable” or “a candidate for further study” unless multiple independent lines of evidence justify a stronger statement.
This ladder explains why a headline about a promising molecule is not equivalent to a discovery of life. Each level answers a different question, and the later levels depend on information that may be unavailable for a particular planet.
What current observations cannot yet tell us by themselves
- A habitable-zone orbit cannot confirm surface liquid water.
- Earth-like size cannot confirm Earth-like composition, pressure or climate.
- A detected atmospheric molecule cannot prove biological production.
- A nondetection cannot rule out life that produces a weak, hidden or different signal.
- Webb’s ability to study atmospheres is an observing capability, not evidence that it has detected life.
- The field has no source-established, universal statistic for the number of exoplanets that support life or the frequency of inhabited worlds.
The scientifically defensible conclusion for most candidates is therefore conditional: the available measurements may make surface liquid water plausible, constrain an atmosphere or motivate additional observations, while leaving the presence of life unresolved.
