Your final liability depends on the tax year, your status and regime, and your total taxable income.
There is also a date-based rule change: dividend credits or payments up to 31 March 2026 fall under the Income Tax Act, 1961; events on or after 1 April 2026 use the Income Tax Act, 2025 withholding provisions. Check the official guidance for the year and event relevant to you.

How are dividends on Indian shares taxed?
Dividend income is reported in your income-tax return as income from other sources. The return schedule asks for gross dividend amounts and provides separate categories, so use the applicable schedule rather than reporting only the amount received after withholding.

Reconcile the gross figures with your broker, bank, and tax information records. The relevant return form and tax calculation depend on your full income and taxpayer circumstances—not just the fact that you received a dividend.

Is TDS on dividends the final tax?
No. Tax deducted at source (TDS) is withheld and credited during the year; it does not, by itself, determine your final personal tax liability. When you calculate tax under the rules for your year and circumstances, the amount withheld may be set against the liability. You may have additional tax to pay, or the withholding may exceed the final amount due.
The Finance Bill, 2026 schedule specifies withholding rates of 10% for the dividend category it identifies and 20% for other dividend income. These are category- and framework-specific withholding rates, not universal final tax rates for every shareholder. Confirm the rate and provision applicable to your status and the date the dividend was credited or paid.
Which rules apply before and after 1 April 2026?
| Dividend credit or payment event | Withholding framework | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| On or before 31 March 2026 | Income Tax Act, 1961 provisions | Use the section references and rules applicable to that event. |
| On or after 1 April 2026 | Income Tax Act, 2025 withholding provisions | Use the corresponding provisions and references under the new Act. |
The Income Tax Department says TDS rates and monetary thresholds were retained under the new Act, while provisions were consolidated and renumbered. Its TDS compliance FAQ states: “No. The TDS rates and monetary thresholds for all categories of payments have been retained as they are under the Income Tax Act, 1961.” The change in governing Act and section numbering makes the event date important even where the rate or threshold is unchanged. See the Department’s TDS Compliance FAQs and official portal.
How does your tax regime affect the amount due?
Your final tax is calculated using the rules for your tax year and personal circumstances, not by applying the payer’s withholding percentage to the dividend alone. For the Department’s AY 2026-27 ITR-2 guidance, the new-regime slabs are:
| Total income band | Listed new-regime rate |
|---|---|
| Up to ₹4 lakh | Nil |
| ₹4 lakh to ₹8 lakh | 5% |
| ₹8 lakh to ₹12 lakh | 10% |
| ₹12 lakh to ₹16 lakh | 15% |
| ₹16 lakh to ₹20 lakh | 20% |
| ₹20 lakh to ₹24 lakh | 25% |
| Above ₹24 lakh | 30% |
The same AY 2026-27 guidance states a section 87A rebate of ₹60,000 for eligible taxpayers under the new regime whose total income is up to ₹12 lakh. Eligibility and the tax-year rules matter; these figures should not be carried into later-year advice without checking the current guidance. The Department’s AY 2026-27 ITR-2 guidance gives the cited slabs and rebate.
Where do I report dividend income in my ITR?
Report gross dividends in the return’s “Income from other sources” schedule. The notified AY 2026-27 return form’s Schedule OS includes dividend categories, including a general dividend category alongside specifically listed subcategories. Match the amounts to the form’s categories and retain records that support the gross amounts and tax withheld.
The Income Tax Department’s return guidance identifies dividends as other-source income; the notified form is Notification No. 47 of 2026.

The form depends on your entire income and eligibility profile. Receiving dividends alone does not decide whether ITR-1 or ITR-2 is appropriate.

ITR-1
ITR-1 is limited to taxpayers who meet its detailed conditions. The AY 2026-27 guidance lists exclusions that include certain capital gains, unlisted equity shares, foreign assets or foreign-source income, company director status, and total income above ₹50 lakh. Check the current form’s full eligibility rules before choosing it.
ITR-2
ITR-2 is for individuals, resident or non-resident, and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) with income other than income chargeable under “Profits and gains of business or profession.” If you have business or professional income, the appropriate return may differ. See the Department’s pages for ITR-1 applicability and ITR-2 applicability.
When must you pay tax on dividends?
The dividend date is not a universal deadline for paying your final tax. Keep these separate:
- Dividend credit or payment: the event date helps determine which withholding Act applies.
- TDS: tax the payer withholds during the year; this is not automatically your full tax settlement.
- Any additional tax: the balance depends on your final tax calculation and applicable payment rules.
- Return filing: the deadline depends on your taxpayer category and the relevant tax year.
The official material cited here does not establish one payment or filing deadline that applies to every investor. Confirm current advance-tax, balance-payment, and return-filing dates on the Income Tax Department portal for your taxpayer category and year.
