Archaeologists test a suspected projectile-impact mark by documenting its three-dimensional shape, comparing it with controlled experiments, examining microscopic residues and fractures, and eliminating carnivore damage, cut marks, corrosion, trampling, weathering and other post-depositional changes. Internal beveling, directional offset, a polygonal outline, impact cracking or flaking, and embedded stone can make a projectile explanation persuasive. Even a well-supported impact mark usually cannot identify the exact weapon: a thrusting spear, thrown spear, dart and arrow may leave overlapping signatures.
What archaeologists are actually trying to identify
Researchers usually begin with a neutral description rather than the word “spear.” A lesion may be a puncture, perforation, drag mark, notch, crack or an irregular cavity. Its position on the skeletal element matters as much as its outline. A hole on a rib, vertebra, limb bone or cranial surface is interpreted in relation to the bone’s thickness, curvature and mechanical properties.

The practical question is whether the damage is consistent with a high-energy projectile impact and inconsistent with other agents. If the evidence supports impact, analysts then ask what kind of point and delivery system could have produced it. Morphology alone rarely resolves that second question.

The step-by-step identification process
1. Record the lesion and its anatomical location
Every analysis starts with scale photographs, orientation and a written description. Analysts record which bone and surface are affected, whether the opening passes through the bone, and whether damage extends away from it. They note the long axis of the lesion, the condition of the surrounding cortex and whether the surface has been eroded or mineral-stained.

Location is an interpretive variable, not a decorative detail. Experimental work on medium-sized animals found that drag marks were concentrated in particular skeletal regions: 40% were on ribs and 34.3% on vertebrae. Those figures describe that experiment, not a universal distribution in hunted animals, but they show why anatomical placement belongs in the comparison.
2. Classify the gross damage
Projectile punctures often have a regular, sometimes polygonal, outline that reflects the cross-section of a point. A perforation may have an entry opening and an exit or internal surface with beveling. An impact can also produce secondary cracks, detached flakes or a short drag where the point moved across the cortex before penetrating.
Shape must be read together with edge form. A clean-looking circular cavity can result from several processes, while an angular outline with an internally beveled edge and directional offset carries more information. Analysts therefore document the complete geometry rather than treating “round” as a diagnosis.
3. Measure the mark in three dimensions
Three-dimensional microscopy and scanning turn a visual impression into quantitative data. Common measurements include opening area, maximum depth, volume, breadth-to-depth relationships and opening angle. A digital model can show whether the walls converge, flare or change direction, and can preserve a record for independent review.
In the experimental reference work, projectile drags tended to be deeper and more U-shaped than many cut marks. Punctures were deeper than carnivore pits and differed in their area-to-volume relationships. These are comparative tendencies, not pass-fail thresholds: point material, impact angle, bone thickness and later erosion can all shift the measurements.

Structured-light scanning, optical microscopy and micro-CT can be combined when the mark is important or fragile. Micro-CT is useful for seeing internal cracks, hidden beveling and mineral-filled cavities without cutting the specimen. The goal is to test a suspected impact against a matched experimental reference, not to apply a single universal number.
4. Examine microscopic traces and residues
High magnification can reveal impact damage that is invisible in a photograph. Analysts look for tiny stone fragments lodged in the lesion, linear striations, crushed bone and fracture surfaces with a directionally coherent pattern. An embedded lithic fragment is especially persuasive when its material and geometry are compatible with a known point technology, although its absence does not disprove impact.

Researchers can also examine the projectile itself. Microscopic linear impact traces (MLITs) are fine, transverse marks that form across the impact zone of a stone point. Their orientation can indicate how the point entered the target. Diagnostic impact fractures (DIFs), together with MLITs and possible hafting traces, can establish that a point was used as a weapon. A point with appropriate armature morphology and these use traces is stronger evidence than either morphology or a single scratch considered alone.
5. Compare the lesion with controlled experiments
Experimental reference collections are central to the argument. Researchers fire or thrust points of known material and shape into bones of known size, then record the resulting marks with the same imaging methods used on archaeological specimens. The comparison should account for point design, projectile material, impact angle, distance, velocity, target species and bone thickness.
A 2020 Scientific Reports study identified drag and puncture marks as the only diagnostic categories in its experimental framework for projectile-impact marks. In its medium-sized-animal reference experiment, drag marks made up 50% of the recorded injuries and punctures 24.3%. Drag marks showed unilateral flaking in 48.6% of cases and cracking in 34.3%. These percentages describe that particular sample and should not be converted into a general probability that any archaeological hole was made by a spear.

A separate small-mammal ballistic experiment involved 90 arrows and documented 66 bone hunting injuries. Its value is methodological: it links known projectiles and impacts to measurable bone damage. It does not supply a universal accuracy rate for identifying every archaeological projectile mark.
6. Exclude other causes of a hole
Projectile interpretation is strongest when competing explanations have been tested explicitly. Analysts compare geometry, depth, edge texture, internal structure and surface microtexture with known damage from carnivores, stone tools, corrosion, trampling and weathering.
| Possible cause | Features analysts compare | Why it can be confused with impact |
|---|---|---|
| Projectile puncture or perforation | Regular or polygonal outline, depth, internal beveling, directional offset, impact cracks or flakes, compatible residues | Bone curvature, point shape and impact angle produce wide variation |
| Carnivore tooth pit | Usually shallower geometry, edge crushing, pit shape and area-to-volume profile | A tooth can create a deep cavity, especially in thin bone |
| Cut mark | Linear groove, V-shaped cross-section, repeated striations and a slicing trajectory | A dragging projectile can also leave a groove; experimental drags tend to be deeper and more U-shaped |
| Corrosion or chemical cavity | Irregular margins, dissolution texture and mineral alteration extending beyond a point-like impact | Mineral loss can enlarge or soften an original mark |
| Trampling | Randomly oriented scratches, crushing, multiple contacts and surface abrasion | Compression against gravel can make pits, notches or fractures |
| Weathering and post-depositional damage | Longitudinal cracking, exfoliation, bleaching and surface deterioration | Later damage can erase the diagnostic edge or modify the original depth |
No single feature in this table is decisive. For example, cracking can accompany an impact but can also arise during burial or weathering. The analyst asks whether the complete pattern is best explained by one agent and whether that explanation fits the specimen’s depositional history.
Why direction and internal beveling matter
When a point enters obliquely, the opening may be offset and one side of the internal wall can be beveled. The angle of the opening and the direction of that bevel can indicate the trajectory through the bone. A perforation with consistent entry and exit geometry is more informative than a shallow, isolated depression.
Directionality is still conditional. A thin or curved bone can deform, and an impact that stops inside the cortex may not produce a clear exit. Bone fragmentation, root etching or mineral replacement can also obscure the original walls. Analysts therefore report the direction as a measured geometric observation and explain how certain—or uncertain—the inference is.

How archaeological context changes the strength of the case
A mark is interpreted alongside the entire site assemblage. Relevant evidence includes the site’s chronology, prey anatomy, the location of the bone, associated stone points, manufacturing debris, fractures on those points and independent signs of hunting. A projectile mark on a prey element found with compatible armatures is a stronger behavioral argument than an identical mark from an isolated fossil with no archaeological association.
Context does not override morphology. A stone point found nearby may have been deposited later, and a genuine impact mark can survive where the weapon itself is absent. Analysts use stratigraphic position, refitting, spatial patterning and preservation to judge whether the association is meaningful.
The Abric Romaní projectile study illustrates this integrated approach. Researchers combined traceology, optical and three-dimensional microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, structured-light scanning and micro-CT. The authors argued that a tool can be considered a hunting weapon when diagnostic impact fractures and MLITs occur with other use signs, such as hafting traces, and when the tool’s morphology is appropriate for an armature. They also stated that their evidence did not establish the delivery mode.
Can the hole distinguish a spear from an arrow?
Usually not. Point shape, target size, impact speed, angle and distance can overlap among thrusting spears, thrown spears, darts and arrows. A 2014 study noted that standardized criteria were lacking and that spear versus arrow, point type and distance could not reliably be separated from morphology alone.

Even then, the delivery method may remain unresolved.

What can weaken or overturn a spear-impact interpretation?
- Altered surfaces: Weathering, corrosion, root etching and mineral replacement can remove the edge features needed for diagnosis.
- Small or thin bones: A point can pass through or split the cortex, producing a mark unlike the same point in a thick bone.
- Experimental mismatch: Comparing a fossil lesion with experiments using a different point material, target animal or impact condition can create a false match.
- Incomplete documentation: A photograph without scale, orientation or a 3D record limits independent evaluation.
- Over-specific wording: Calling every projectile mark a spear wound claims more than morphology usually supports.
- Post-depositional alteration: Burial pressure, trampling and chemical damage may add cracks or enlarge an opening after the original event.
When preservation is poor, the responsible result may be “indeterminate puncture” or “damage consistent with, but not diagnostic of, projectile impact.” That is not a failure of the method; it is a recognition that the available signal cannot support a narrower claim.
How a defensible conclusion is written
A strong report separates observations from interpretation. It states the lesion’s location and measurements, describes beveling and cracks, identifies any residue, lists the experimental references used and explains why carnivore, cut-mark, corrosion, trampling and weathering hypotheses fit less well. It then gives the narrowest conclusion justified by the evidence.
For example, “A deep, polygonal puncture with internal beveling and directional offset is morphologically consistent with experimental projectile impacts; no embedded lithic fragment was detected, and the available evidence does not distinguish a spear from an arrow” is more scientifically useful than “This is a spear hole.”
The practical takeaway
Archaeologists identify a probable projectile-impact mark through converging evidence: diagnostic three-dimensional geometry, directionality, cracking or flaking, microscopic traces, experimental matches and archaeological context. A hole becomes persuasive only after alternative taphonomic causes have been tested. Even then, the result generally identifies an impact event rather than a uniquely named weapon, and published experimental frequencies cannot be used as a universal accuracy percentage.
