What Apple TV+ is—and what it is not
Apple’s subscription service is accessed through the Apple TV app on compatible devices or through a web browser. Its subscription catalog focuses on Apple Originals. The Apple TV app is broader than the subscription itself: it can provide links to other services and a store for renting or buying individual titles. Those separate subscriptions and one-time transactions do not become part of your Apple TV subscription.
The name causes a common hardware misunderstanding. Apple TV 4K is a living-room streaming box. Apple’s service page explicitly answers the question “Do I need an Apple TV 4K?” with “No, you don’t.” You can subscribe and watch without buying Apple hardware.

A compatible smart television, streaming device, game console, phone, tablet, computer, or browser may be enough. Apple TV 4K is simply one optional way to put the app on a television.

The $14.99 figure and seven-day trial are current U.S. listings, not worldwide prices. Apple warns that pricing and available offers vary by country. A device promotion also does not mean every Apple device purchase automatically includes the offer; read the eligibility language attached to that purchase.

Choose according to where you watch and whether you need downloads, rather than assuming Apple TV 4K is required.

Can you download Apple TV+ shows for offline viewing?
Yes, but only on supported personal devices. Apple’s current guidance supports downloads on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Windows PC, and Apple Vision Pro. The Apple TV 4K, Apple TV HD, smart televisions, streaming devices, and tv.apple.com do not download subscription content; they stream it.
That distinction matters for travel. A television may have the Apple TV app, yet it cannot serve as the device that stores episodes for an airplane or an area without internet access. Download to a personal device first.
Download on iPhone or iPad
- Open the Apple TV app.
- Find the show, movie, sports event, or other eligible title.
- Open the title and tap Download. For a series, use the download control for the episode or season offered by the app.
- To watch later, open Library and choose Downloaded.
Download on Mac or Windows PC
- Open the Apple TV app on the supported computer.
- Select a movie or event and choose its download control. For a television episode, use the More menu and select the download option.
- Open Library, then Downloaded, to find saved titles.
Download on Apple Vision Pro
Apple includes Vision Pro among the personal devices that support downloads. Use the title’s download control in the Apple TV app, then access saved content from Library and Downloaded.

How long do downloads last?
Downloads are licensed for offline playback; they are not permanent copies. Apple says some subscription titles expire 48 hours after playback begins or 30 days after the download, whichever comes first. Channel downloads can have different time limits, and a channel may restrict the number of downloads or the devices that can hold them.
Because limits vary by title and channel, check the information shown in the app before a long trip. Starting a download does not guarantee that it will remain playable indefinitely, even if the subscription is still active.
How many people can stream at once?
Apple states that most Apple TV subscription content can stream on up to six devices simultaneously. Some titles allow fewer concurrent streams. If access comes through the Apple Music Student Plan, Apple limits simultaneous use to one device.
These are simultaneous-playback limits, not a promise that every title, channel, or regional service has identical rules. A channel subscription surfaced in the Apple TV app can impose its own conditions.

Apple does not offer one universal Apple TV package worldwide. The price, free-trial availability, device offers, sports rights, channels, app support, and catalog can vary by country. A U.S. price or promotion should not be used to predict what someone will see elsewhere.
Regional differences also affect living-room hardware. A television model may support the app in one market but not another, and a platform listed by Apple may not expose every feature in every country. Check Apple’s local service page and compatibility information with the account’s country set correctly.

Sports availability is especially sensitive to territory. Even when the Apple TV app is available, a particular event or league may not be offered in the same way outside the United States.

The app is missing from a television
Do not assume the television is unsupported merely because its brand appears on Apple’s list. Check the exact model, operating-system version, and country in Apple’s compatibility information. If the model is not supported, use a compatible streaming device, game console, AirPlay television, computer, or browser instead.
There is no Download button
First check the device. Downloads are for supported personal devices, not Apple TV boxes, smart TVs, streaming devices, or the web player. If you are on a supported personal device, the title or channel may still have its own download restriction or limit.
A downloaded title will not play later
Some downloads expire 48 hours after playback starts or 30 days after download, whichever comes first. Channel titles can follow different deadlines. Review the title’s availability in the app rather than treating every download as a permanent file.
Playback is blocked because too many devices are active
Most subscription titles allow up to six simultaneous devices, but some allow fewer. Student-plan access allows one simultaneous device. Stop playback on another active device and try again; if the title is a channel program, its own stream limit may apply.

No. Apple TV 4K is an optional television device. It can provide a dedicated Apple TV app experience, but compatible smart TVs, streaming devices, consoles, AirPlay, phones, tablets, computers, and the browser can also provide access. It is not an offline-download solution: Apple TV hardware streams subscription content and cannot download it for later playback.
