Apple TV+ recommendations are created inside the Apple TV app from what you watch, while Watchlist is the app’s save-for-later system. On Apple TV 4K, Apple names two recommendation experiences—Genius Browse and For All of You. Watchlist items can also surface in Continue Watching, and your viewing activity can sync personalization and saved items across devices using the same Apple Account.
Apple documents the controls and visible behavior, but not the algorithm’s ranking formula, feature weights, or any accuracy statistic. The practical result is that you can influence what appears, separate household tastes with profiles, and turn history-based personalization off without confusing that switch with deleting your history.

What Apple TV recommendations actually use
Apple’s plain-language description is direct: “The Apple TV app uses what you watch to personalize your recommendations.” That applies to recommendations in the Apple TV app, which can include Apple TV+ titles as well as content from other channels, apps, and stores that your device and region support. It does not mean Apple has published a complete list of signals or a fixed ranking formula.
On Apple TV 4K, the documented recommendation surfaces include Genius Browse and For All of You. Genius Browse can be adjusted by profile, by choosing TV shows or movies, and by genre. For All of You combines the individual taste and viewing history of the profiles you select, attempting to find something suitable for the household rather than for only one person. Apple does not publish a measured accuracy rate or explain how much weight it assigns to a particular viewing event.

The Home tab can also show a new title or the next episode from a supported connected app. “Supported” matters: Apple’s documentation does not promise that every streaming service integrates with the Apple TV app, and availability varies by country, device, and app.

Genius Browse and For All of You
Genius Browse: a focused way to explore
Genius Browse is designed for an individual browsing session. On Apple TV 4K, you can select the profile whose preferences should guide the results, restrict the view to TV shows or movies, and choose a genre. Those controls narrow the context in which Apple presents suggestions, but Apple does not state that selecting a genre changes the underlying recommendation model or guarantees a particular type of title.

For All of You: shared household recommendations
For All of You lets you select the household profiles that should contribute to a shared set of suggestions. Apple describes the result as recommendations based on each selected profile’s individual taste and viewing history. A family can therefore include several profiles for a group choice without merging everyone’s entire account into one anonymous history.
On Apple TV 4K, open the recommendation area, choose the profiles to include, and edit that selection when the group changes. The exact labels can differ on a television or streaming device running a different version of the Apple TV app, so use the on-screen profile controls on that device.

How Watchlist differs from Continue Watching
Watchlist is where you save movies and shows to watch later. The same saved movies and shows can appear in both the Watchlist row and Continue Watching. Continue Watching is therefore not limited to programs you started; a title deliberately saved for later can be surfaced there as well. Live sports events can appear in those rows while they are live.

Apple treats Watchlist as account-and-profile data rather than a device-only bookmark. On supported devices, it is visible when you sign in with the same Apple Account. Profiles on supported televisions and streaming devices have separate Watchlists, video collections, and recommendations, so adding a title under one profile should not make it part of another profile’s personal list.
How to add or remove titles
Apple TV 4K
- Open the Apple TV app and navigate to the movie or show you want.
- Select Add to Watchlist. On an item already saved, the control may appear as a checkmark.
- To remove it, open the title from Watchlist or Continue Watching and choose Remove from Watchlist. The title page also provides the add/checkmark control.
Apple’s step-by-step guide is Find things to watch. Menu names can vary slightly with tvOS versions and with the app supplied by a television or streaming-device manufacturer.
iPhone and iPad
- In the Apple TV app, touch and hold a movie or show.
- Choose Add to Watchlist.
- Open the Watchlist or Continue Watching row to find it later. Use the title’s available remove control if you no longer want it saved.
Apple says the Watchlist can be viewed on several devices signed in to the same Apple Account, subject to device, app, and regional support. The iPhone Home-tab documentation is at Personalize the Home tab in the Apple TV app on iPhone.
How syncing works across devices
By default, Apple says what you watch can affect personalized recommendations and Watchlist on devices signed in to the same Apple Account. This is why watching on an iPhone can change suggestions on an Apple TV 4K, and why a saved title can appear on another supported device after synchronization.
Syncing is account-based, but the experience is still limited by the device, country, region, connected app, and content rights. A title may be visible in one location and unavailable to play in another. A television app may also expose fewer controls than the Apple TV app on Apple hardware.
Turning off history-based personalization
iPhone and iPad
Apple provides a Use Play History switch in the TV settings. On current iPhone and iPad instructions, the path is Settings > Apps > TV, followed by the Use Play History control. Turning it off stops Apple from using new viewing activity for the documented personalized-recommendation and Watchlist behavior. It is a control for future use of play history, not an automatic deletion of the history already associated with the account.
Apple TV 4K and other living-room devices
On Apple TV 4K, Apple documents Use Play History in the Apple TV app’s privacy settings. Open the app’s settings on the living-room device, locate the privacy section, and change Use Play History. Third-party televisions and streaming devices may place the same control under a different settings path or may not expose every Apple TV 4K option.

Do not confuse switching off history with clearing it
Disabling Use Play History and clearing play history have different consequences. Apple says Clear Play History removes information about what you watched that is synced with the Apple TV app on other devices. It also removes TV shows and movies from the Continue Watching and Watchlist rows.
That makes clearing a broad reset, not a harmless way to refresh a few recommendations. If you only want to stop future viewing from influencing personalization, switch off Use Play History and leave existing data intact. If you clear history, expect saved or surfaced titles to disappear from those rows and plan to add wanted titles again.
Profiles for households
Profiles are the most reliable way to keep different viewing tastes apart. Apple says supported televisions and streaming devices give profiles unique Watchlists, video collections, and recommendations. Switching profiles refreshes the Apple TV app for that person’s data.
For shared discovery, choose the profiles that For All of You should consider instead of asking everyone to use one account-level profile. For private viewing, Apple documents a four-digit profile passcode on supported setups. A passcode can prevent another household member from accessing that profile’s watch history, recommendations, and Watchlist, although it does not change the availability of the underlying subscription or catalog.

A recommendation reflects someone else’s viewing
Check which profile was active when the viewing occurred. If several people use one profile, their histories are mixed by design. Move each person to a separate profile, then use For All of You only when you want a group-oriented result.

A title is in Continue Watching
Continue Watching can contain both partially watched programs and items saved to Watchlist. Live sports can also appear there while live. Remove an unwanted title from its row or from the title page using the available remove control.
A saved title is missing on another device
Confirm that both devices use the same Apple Account and the intended profile. Then check whether the device, country, region, and app support the title or the Watchlist feature. A connected app may not be supported in that location, and content rights can differ.
Recommendations changed after a reset
If Clear Play History was used, Apple says synced watched information was removed and titles were removed from Continue Watching and Watchlist rows. Re-add the titles you still want saved and allow new viewing activity to rebuild personalization.
What Apple has not revealed
Apple’s support pages explain visible features and privacy switches, not implementation details. They do not identify a machine-learning model, ranking weights, watch-time thresholds, freshness rules, or a recommendation-accuracy benchmark. It is therefore not possible to say from Apple’s published material that one setting produces objectively “better” recommendations than another.
Apple also does not claim that every service in a household’s subscription list contributes data to the Apple TV app. The documented wording is limited to supported connected apps, with availability varying by country, region, device, and app. Treat a title shown on Home as a discovery or resume link; the app may still hand playback to another service.
A practical setup for cleaner recommendations
- Create separate profiles for people who have substantially different tastes.
- Use the individual profile for personal browsing and select only the relevant profiles in For All of You for group viewing.
- Add uncertain titles to Watchlist instead of relying on memory; remember that saved items may also appear in Continue Watching.
- Keep Use Play History enabled if you want viewing activity to shape recommendations and synced Watchlist behavior.
- Turn Use Play History off when you do not want new viewing to influence personalization; do not choose Clear Play History unless you accept the removal of synced watched information and the row entries Apple describes.
- When a title or connected-app result is unavailable, check the device, region, profile, and app support before assuming the account is broken.
For search rather than algorithmic recommendations, Apple gives examples such as “popular dramas with a twist” and “animated movies good for the whole family.” Those are natural-language search examples, not evidence that the recommendation system interprets a hidden score for each phrase.
