How Anion Detection Can Help Police Investigate Explosions and Poisonings

Anion analysis can help police laboratories characterize chemical evidence from suspected explosions or poisonings. Analysts use methods such as ion chromatography (IC) and capillary electrophoresis (CE) to separate negatively charged chemical species in a sample and assess the resulting profile. That can generate investigative leads, but an anion profile alone does not identify a person, prove how a substance was used, or establish the source of a chemical.

What anion detection can tell investigators

Anions are negatively charged chemical species. In a forensic laboratory, analysts may extract soluble chemicals from evidence and separate the anions in the extract. The resulting profile can help indicate which substances may be present and guide comparisons with other evidence.

The FBI’s 2001 technical article describes anion analysis as a potential aid in investigating bombings and poisonings. Its authors characterize IC and CE as complementary methods for establishing leads alongside other forensic methods, not as stand-alone tests that identify a perpetrator. Read the FBI article.

Where the methods may help

Post-blast residue

After an explosion, a laboratory may examine residue for anions associated with explosive materials. A mixture of anions can help characterize a residue profile and inform comparisons with reference materials or other evidence. Individual ions may be shared by different materials, so finding one does not uniquely identify a device, its source, or the person who handled it.

Suspected poison in food or drink

Anion analysis may also support examination of food or drink when poisoning is suspected. The FBI article discusses comparing suspect samples with reference substances as a screening approach. It explicitly describes this food-adulteration work as research in progress, not a finalized, validated operating procedure; it should not be treated as a current standard protocol.

Residues in enhanced fingermarks

A 2013 study reported detecting anionic energetic-material residues in enhanced fingermarks on paper and glass. The researchers considered factors including the sweat matrix, surface, enhancement technique, and potential interferences. This is a study result, not evidence that every fingermark-enhancement process preserves residues or that this analysis is routinely deployed in police casework. See the study record on PubMed.

Ion chromatography and capillary electrophoresis compared

Both methods separate components in a sample, but they do so differently. IC separates ions chromatographically; CE separates charged species as they migrate under an electric field. Which approach fits a case depends on the ions of interest, the evidence matrix, the method’s validation for that purpose, and the reference and interpretive support available.

The historical FBI account does not establish a universal winner or current performance standard for either method. It also describes analytical complications, including coelution and changes in chemical behavior under different solution conditions. Analysts must consider such effects when interpreting results rather than treating a separation trace as self-explanatory.

Strip Detective Infidelity Semen Detection Test Kit, Sperm Detection Test Strips for Semen Presence, At-Home Acid Phosphatase (AP) Test, 10 pcs
  • At-home infidelity test (2 min): Presumptive semen detection via initial detection of acid phosphatase (AP), a semen indicator – results in approximately 2 minutes.
  • Easy to use sperm detection test: Moisten the stain, apply the test strip, wait, and compare the colour to the colour guide on the package. An ideal infidelity test for home use.
  • Versatile semen presence test: The semen detection test detects the presence of semen on textiles, bedding, ceramics, and paper; also suitable for old or dried stains.
  • Forensic-style method (home screening): Inspired by forensic analysis (presumptive AP method); like any at-home semen presence test, a positive result requires laboratory confirmation.
  • Contents & discreet packaging: 10 test strips, a spray bottle (fill with water), and instructions for use – shipped in discreet packaging.

Why a detected anion does not prove who used a substance

A laboratory result is one part of an evidence chain: collection and preservation, validated analysis, comparison and interpretation, then corroboration with other evidence. The presence of an anion can be consistent with a material of interest, but different materials may share ions. The FBI article also explains that separation methods alone do not conclusively identify an anion’s compound or source; standards or other instrumental techniques may be needed to support identification.

  • Shared chemistry: an ion may occur in more than one material, so its presence is not unique source attribution.
  • Sample and method effects: the evidence matrix, solution conditions, and separation behavior can affect what is observed.
  • Contamination control: handling and laboratory procedures must prevent, monitor, and detect contamination.
  • Validation: the specific procedure must be suitable and validated for its intended forensic purpose.

The UK Forensic Science Regulator’s statutory code sets requirements that include validation and contamination controls in its jurisdiction. It is a UK framework, not a universal legal rule for laboratories elsewhere. Read the UK code.

What the available evidence does not establish

The cited sources describe laboratory separation and analysis; they do not establish a portable consumer device or test strip that can produce forensic conclusions. Nor should the FBI article’s 2001 experimental procedures be presented as current validated casework methods. The practical value of a result depends on the laboratory’s validated procedure, the evidence submitted, and interpretation alongside other forensic findings.
