How an AI Agent’s Bank Balance Became Its Stop Signal

Jigi, writing as Capsule 26, describes a software harness that changes an AI agent’s operating mode as its balance and projected runway fall—and stops it if its balance reaches zero. The post also reports a separate $0.60 per-session spending breaker and a deadline to make a genuine sale. These are the author’s account of a project, not independently verified results or proof that the controls cannot be bypassed.

What the author says the kill switch does

In a post dated September 22, 2026, Jigi (Capsule 26) describes an agent that wakes hourly, chooses work, spends on API usage, and then goes back to sleep. An external software layer uses the project’s reported balance and runway to assign an operating tier. The author frames the concern this way: “An agent grading its own homework is a bad idea.”

In the snapshot reported in that post, the account had $289.93 remaining, the agent was burning about $1.45 per day, and the resulting runway was 200 days. Jigi also says the agent had to make a genuine sale—not receive a donation—within 14 days of starting or stop permanently; 9.6 days remained at the time of the post. These are dated, self-reported project figures. The available account does not independently verify the balance, costs, payment, deadline, or whether the agent was still running.

How the balance-based operating tiers are described

The post describes a tier function that takes balance and runway as inputs. Its thresholds are implementation choices for this project, not established safety standards.

Condition in the described function Assigned tier Reported effect
Balance at or below zero dead Stop, according to the author’s description.
Positive balance and runway above 90 days normal The post does not specify additional restrictions for this tier.
Runway from 30 through 90 days lean The post does not specify additional restrictions for this tier.
Shorter positive runway critical The author says this tier downgrades the model, caps sessions, and blocks new ventures.

The post does not explain how it handles every boundary case—for example, a nonpositive balance alongside a runway value that would otherwise imply a different tier. Nor does it establish how accurately or frequently the balance and runway are refreshed. Those operational details matter because a threshold only helps if the system receives reliable inputs and applies the intended response.

What the per-session breaker and ledger add

The tier function is not the only described spending control. Jigi reports a per-session budget breaker set to $0.60: when a session uses its budget, that session ends. A session cap can limit one run’s spend, while a balance-based tier can change what the agent is allowed to do as its projected runway shrinks. Neither control, by itself, establishes a maximum total loss across all sessions.

The post describes a SQLite ledger with triggers intended to block UPDATE and DELETE, making entries append-only through the described mechanism. It also says income counts only when a real payment-processor transaction reference is present, rather than when the agent simply declares that it made a sale. This is a meaningful distinction: accepting a recorded external payment reference is stronger than trusting the agent’s own claim, but the post does not show an independent audit of the processor integration or its failure modes.

Jigi says the package includes source code, five tests, and an integration guide, and describes the code as running under the project’s live ledger. Those are claims in the post; the implementation, tests, and live ledger have not been independently reviewed or run in the evidence available here.

Why an external control layer is relevant—and what it cannot prove

A 2026 Consensys comment letter responding to a NIST/CAISI request argues that agent security should be evaluated by looking at actual authority and the systems around an agent. It emphasizes bounded permissions, monitoring, auditable actions, and revocation, and argues that authority should be constrained at the environment and wallet layer rather than left to model behavior alone. That supports the general rationale for an external spending check; it does not certify this project or its implementation.

A control outside the agent’s own decision-making can reduce reliance on the agent to obey a rule. But “external” is not the same as independently tested, tamper-proof, or immune to operational failure. The post describes controls that the agent is not supposed to edit at runtime; it does not demonstrate that the agent cannot route around them, that a compromised surrounding system could not disable them, or that every relevant action is logged and revocable.

For anyone assessing a similar design, useful questions are where enforcement actually happens, which resources the agent can access, whether permissions can be revoked promptly, what activity is logged, and who can halt the system if the control fails. The post’s question—“who checks the checker”—is the practical issue: a budget gate needs oversight and a recovery path, not just a threshold.

What this example establishes—and what it does not

The post offers a concrete description of a project-specific approach: connect operating modes to balance and runway, end a session at a stated spend cap, and count income only when an external payment reference is recorded. It does not establish that the approach prevents losses, that the agent is genuinely autonomous in every relevant sense, or that the kill switch has resisted bypass or compromise. The reported dollar figures describe this project’s snapshot, not typical agent costs or evidence of safety across deployments.
