To resupply efficiently, identify the ammunition category your weapon uses, then choose the most reliable source available in that game and mode.
What an ammo drop actually is
An ammo drop is any ammunition made available after you begin a match or run low. The source may be a loose pickup on the floor, a container you open, a brick dropped by an eliminated player, a fixed map spawner, a deployable box, a class ability, a shop purchase, or an automatic grant when you spawn. Each source has its own reliability, access cost, team scope and reset behavior.

The first check is compatibility. Most games do not treat all bullets as interchangeable. A weapon may require a named ammo family, a color-coded category, or a broad class such as Primary, Special or Heavy. Picking up a different category can leave your equipped weapon unchanged even though the pickup appears to be ammunition.

The five questions that explain any FPS resupply loop
1. How is ammunition classified?
Some games use weapon-family or caliber-style categories. Others use broad power tiers. The classification determines which pickup can fill a weapon and often controls how scarce that resource is.
2. Is the source random or guaranteed?
Ground loot and containers can be uncertain. A class bag, resupply crate or spawn grant is usually more predictable. A purchase is reliable only if you have enough currency and can reach the station safely.
3. What does access cost?
You might spend time walking to a known location, expose yourself while opening a box, consume a cooldown, win a fight for a dropped brick, spend cash, or wait for a respawn.
4. Who receives the ammunition?
A pickup may help only the player who touches it, refill every weapon in one loadout, or supply an entire squad. Team scope changes the value of a drop during a fight.
5. How does the source reset?
Some supplies disappear after one pickup. Others return on a cooldown, after a kill, when a player respawns, or when a map spawner replenishes.

Apex Legends: category-matched loot and strict exceptions
Ammo categories
EA lists Light, Heavy, Energy, Shotgun, Sniper, Mythic and Arrows as Apex Legends ammunition types. Every weapon uses a specific type, and the ground pickup’s category and color must match the weapon you want to feed. A Light pickup cannot refill a Heavy weapon, for example.
Where the ammunition comes from
In normal play, players build reserves from loose ground loot, Supply Bins and bins created when another player is eliminated. Those sources make scavenging and route planning central to a match: a safe area with the wrong category is not a real resupply location for your current loadout.
The Mythic-ammo rule
EA states that “Mythic ammo can’t be replenished or dropped.” Treat that as a hard exception rather than assuming every ammunition type can be stocked indefinitely. Some energy weapons also carry a stockpile that regenerates over time, which is a weapon behavior rather than a normal pickup rule.
Practical Apex routine
- Look at both equipped weapons and identify their ammunition categories.
- Prioritize matching floor loot or open Supply Bins only when the category is useful.
- Search eliminated-player bins after a safe fight, checking the category before taking space in your inventory.
- Do not plan on replacing Mythic ammunition through drops or replenishment.
Battlefield REDSEC: class support and full-loadout resupply
Shared weapon-category ammunition
EA describes REDSEC ammunition as shared within weapon categories such as Assault Rifles, SMGs and LMGs rather than being separated by every individual caliber. That makes the category shown by the weapon more important than trying to match a traditional caliber name.
Support Class Supply Bag
The Support Class Supply Bag provides multiple magazines, clips or shells for the exact weapon being used. This is a targeted, class-based source: the value comes from bringing Support or coordinating with a teammate who has the bag when a squad is preparing for another engagement.

Ammo Resupply Call-In
An Ammo Resupply Call-In drops a special crate from the sky and grants full ammunition to all weapons in the current loadout. It is broader than a normal pickup because it addresses the whole loadout, but the visible drop can also reveal your position and create a contest around the landing area.

Call of Duty: Warzone loot versus paid certainty
Supply Boxes in Warzone
Opening a Warzone Supply Box releases a handful of items that can include weapons, ammunition, killstreaks, gas masks and cash. Because the contents are not guaranteed to be the ammunition you need, boxes are a search-and-opportunity source. Their value is highest when you are already moving through the area and can open several quickly.
Buy Stations
Buy Stations provide the reliable, cash-based alternative for equipment and loadout items. They replace uncertainty with a resource check: you need enough cash, a reachable station and enough time to interact without being interrupted. A station is therefore dependable in inventory terms but risky in positioning terms.
Supply Box Field Upgrade in multiplayer
In Call of Duty multiplayer, the Supply Box Field Upgrade deploys “a box of ammo and equipment for you and your teammates.” It recharges over time and explodes when shot. The ability is a team resource rather than a private refill, so placing it where teammates can use it matters. Its recharge creates a repeatable loop, while the explosion rule means an enemy can turn a visible box into a hazard.
Warzone decision order
- Open nearby Supply Boxes when the route is already safe, treating ammunition as a possible rather than guaranteed result.
- If you have the required cash, use a Buy Station when certainty is worth the exposure and travel time.
- In multiplayer, deploy the Supply Box Field Upgrade where you and teammates can reach it, then account for its recharge and vulnerability to gunfire.
Destiny 2: a tiered ammunition economy
Primary, Special and Power
Bungie’s player guide divides ammunition into Primary, Special and Heavy/Power classes. Primary ammo is unlimited. Special and Power ammo are limited and can appear in the world or at Rally flags. This structure means “running out” has different consequences: a Primary weapon can continue firing, while Special and Power use must be managed around future drops and encounters.

What controls Special and Power generation
Bungie says Special and Power ammunition is generated by defeating enemies. The amount is affected by weapon-generation statistics, armor mods and activity modifiers. Those variables explain why two activities or builds can produce different supplies even when players use similar weapons.
Crucible’s Blended system
For Crucible, Bungie described a Blended model in which players spawn with one kill’s worth of Special ammunition, a Primary-weapon final blow drops a personal brick worth one kill’s ammunition, and crates provide one kill’s worth. The brick is personal, so another player cannot simply take the reward created by your final blow.
Bungie’s 2024 comparison recorded 24.3% of kills by Special weapons under Respawn (Original) and 14.9% under Blended. Those figures describe the reported Crucible systems and period, not a universal balance rule for every mode or later update.
Destiny 2 resupply checklist
- Use Primary ammunition freely because it is unlimited under the player-guide model.
- Reserve Special and Power shots for targets that justify their scarcity.
- Use Rally flags and visible world drops before committing to a long encounter.
- In Crucible, remember that a spawn grant, a crate and a Primary final blow can each establish the next Special-ammo opportunity.
Halo Infinite: map control through replenishing spawners
Halo Support states: “All item spawners and ammo crates on the map will replenish.” The important mechanic is not a single universal quantity but the reset itself. A team that knows a map’s ammunition locations can return after the refill and contest them again, turning resupply into a timing and positioning battle.
Because the source is fixed on the map, Halo Infinite rewards route memory and control. You can plan around a known crate instead of waiting for an eliminated opponent to leave ammunition behind. The opposing team can do the same, so approaching a replenished location may require information, cover and timing rather than a blind sprint.

Comparison: how the major systems differ
| Game | Ammo taxonomy | Most reliable documented source | Access cost | Team scope | Reset behavior |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apex Legends | Weapon-specific categories: Light, Heavy, Energy, Shotgun, Sniper, Mythic and Arrows | Matching ground loot, Supply Bins or eliminated-player bins; Mythic cannot be replenished or dropped | Travel, looting time and inventory space | Usually the player who picks it up | One-time loot; some weapon energy stockpiles regenerate |
| Battlefield REDSEC | Shared weapon categories such as Assault Rifles, SMGs and LMGs | Support Class Supply Bag or Ammo Resupply Call-In | Class access, cooldown or a visible sky-drop interaction | Bag targets the weapon being used; Call-In covers the current loadout | Class or call-in availability; exact timing is mode and patch dependent |
| Call of Duty: Warzone | Weapon and equipment ammunition tied to the loadout | Buy Station when cash is available | Cash, travel and exposure at the station | Purchase is for the interacting player or selected equipment; multiplayer Field Upgrade serves the user and teammates | Supply Boxes are consumed; Field Upgrade recharges over time |
| Destiny 2 | Primary, Special and Heavy/Power | Rally flags, world drops and documented Crucible spawn or crate rules | Encounter access, kills or waiting for the relevant source | Primary final-blow bricks in the described Crucible system are personal | Spawn grant, kill-triggered brick, crate or activity generation |
| Halo Infinite | Weapon-linked ammunition pickups | Known map ammo crates and item spawners | Movement and control of the location | Player who reaches the pickup | Map spawners and ammo crates replenish |
What to do when you run dry
- Identify the category. Check the weapon’s ammunition family or tier before picking up anything. In category-based games, the wrong color or family does nothing for the weapon you are trying to refill.
- Check the mode. Battle royale, arena multiplayer, Crucible and campaign rules can use different drops, grants and reset behavior even within the same franchise.
- Use the highest-certainty nearby source. A class bag, resupply crate, Buy Station, Rally flag or known replenishing spawner is generally more predictable than random floor loot.
- Account for exposure. Opening a box, visiting a station or calling a crate can reveal your position. Take cover, clear nearby threats and avoid standing in an obvious interaction zone.
- Coordinate team resources. Tell teammates when a shared bag, squad box or loadout-wide crate is available. A personal pickup and a team resupply have different priorities.
- Re-evaluate the loadout. If the map repeatedly provides the other ammunition category, changing one weapon can be more efficient than crossing the map for a rare pickup.
Common mistakes and their fixes
Picking up ammunition that cannot help
Cause: the pickup belongs to another category or weapon family. Fix: verify the weapon’s required type before spending inventory space or detouring.
Assuming every crate is guaranteed
Cause: confusing a documented resupply tool with a random container. Fix: treat Warzone Supply Boxes as possible sources, while using Buy Stations, class bags or dedicated resupply call-ins when certainty matters.
Ignoring the team scope
Cause: taking a shared resource without telling teammates, or expecting a personal brick to refill another player. Fix: learn whether the source serves one player, the current loadout or the squad.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsQuoting old timers or quantities
Cause: live-service updates and mode-specific tuning. Fix: rely on the current official guide for exact stack sizes, cooldowns and crate contents; retain only the broader mechanic when a number is no longer confirmed.
Using a resupply location at the wrong moment
Cause: valuing ammunition more than positioning. Fix: approach fixed crates, stations and sky-dropped supplies with cover, information and an escape route.
Why ammo rules differ so much between games
Ammo design is a pacing tool. Category-based loot makes exploration and inventory decisions important, while broad tiers such as Destiny 2’s Primary, Special and Power classes regulate weapon power directly. Random containers create uncertainty and movement; shops convert earlier success into predictable equipment; class abilities reward team composition; spawn and kill grants keep competitive rounds from becoming unwinnable after one lost fight; replenishing map spawners create repeatable control points.
That is why a rule learned in one shooter can mislead you in another. An Apex color category, a REDSEC weapon group, a Warzone cash purchase, a Destiny 2 Special brick and a Halo Infinite map crate are all “ammo resupply,” but they ask the player to solve different problems: matching, coordination, economy, timing or map control.
