ALMA does not see a dying star’s surroundings as an ordinary visible-light photograph. It measures millimeter and submillimeter radiation from two complementary sources: thermal emission from dust grains and narrow spectral lines from molecules in the gas. By mapping where each signal comes from and how its frequency is shifted by motion, astronomers can test whether a ring-like structure is present, determine which material forms it, and connect that structure to episodes of stellar mass loss.
What ALMA actually detects around an evolved star
Stars on the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB), along with red supergiants, can lose substantial material through powerful winds and episodic outflows. The expelled matter becomes a circumstellar envelope containing gas, dust and molecules. As the material cools away from the star, some of the elements and compounds can condense into grains. Radiation pressure accelerates those grains; collisions and drag then help carry gas outward with them.

ALMA, the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, is designed to observe the long-wavelength radiation produced by this cool material. Its maps are therefore measurements of emission, not direct close-up pictures of individual grains. A bright arc or ring in an image is a pattern in the emitting material, reconstructed from signals received by the array.

Dust grains absorb energy from the star and reradiate it as thermal radiation. For evolved-star envelopes, some of that radiation falls at far-infrared through millimeter wavelengths. ALMA records the millimeter part as continuum emission: a broad signal spread across a frequency range rather than concentrated in one molecular transition.

A continuum map shows where the dust is warm enough, abundant enough and optically visible at the observed wavelength to contribute detectable emission. A ring in such a map can indicate that dust is concentrated in a shell, torus or arc-like zone. It does not, by itself, identify the cause of that shape. Uneven mass loss, changes between outflow episodes, viewing angle and interactions within the envelope can all affect the appearance; the specific interpretation must be tested against the target’s other data.
Molecular spectral lines
Individual molecules emit or absorb at precisely defined frequencies. ALMA can isolate transitions from molecules in the circumstellar gas, including carbon monoxide (CO) and silicon monoxide (SiO), as well as isotopic variants. Because each transition has its own frequency and excitation requirements, line observations provide information about composition and physical conditions that a continuum map cannot supply.
The frequency of a line also carries a velocity signal. Gas moving toward or away from the observer shifts the line through the Doppler effect. Measuring that shift across the image lets astronomers build channel maps and velocity patterns, revealing whether material is expanding, rotating, flowing in a preferred direction or arranged in multiple components. A projected circle that looks like a ring in one image may represent a different three-dimensional structure once its velocity field is known.

How mass loss creates material ALMA can map
During the AGB phase, the star can undergo pulses or episodes in which its outflow changes. Material launched during one episode travels outward while later material follows. Dust formation occurs in the cooling, enriched gas close to the star, and radiation pressure pushes the grains away. The outward-moving grains drag surrounding gas into the circumstellar envelope.
This sequence links the observations to stellar evolution. Dust continuum traces the solid component produced by condensation and heating, while molecular lines trace the gas that accompanies it. If an outflow varied over time, the resulting density enhancements can appear as shells, arcs or rings. A ring-like feature is therefore evidence about the distribution of material around a particular target, not a defining feature of every dying star.
How a ring is established in ALMA data
1. Map the continuum morphology
Researchers first examine the continuum image for a coherent enhancement around the stellar position. They check whether the emission forms a complete circle, an ellipse, a partial arc or a thicker torus-like band. Brightness variations matter: a smooth ring and a clumpy shell imply different distributions of dust, even if both look annular at low resolution.

2. Compare the angular structure with molecular emission
Line maps from CO, SiO or other species are compared with the dust map. Gas and dust may coincide, but they can also occupy different zones because molecules are destroyed, frozen onto grains, released by heating or concentrated in shocks. Agreement between a dust enhancement and a molecular enhancement strengthens the case that the feature is a real density structure; a mismatch provides chemical and physical clues rather than automatically disproving the continuum ring.
3. Use velocity-resolved channels
ALMA can separate a molecular line into narrow velocity intervals. In those channels, the apparent position of emission changes as different portions of an expanding or moving structure enter the selected velocity range. A ring produced by an expanding shell has a characteristic relationship between position and line-of-sight velocity, whereas rotation, a bipolar flow or unrelated foreground emission produces a different pattern.
4. Build a three-dimensional interpretation
The final model combines the sky-plane shape, velocity field, brightness and chemistry. Inclination can make a circular structure look elliptical. A thick shell viewed obliquely can resemble a narrow ring, and a torus can project into two bright limbs. Astronomers therefore require target-specific evidence before assigning a physical geometry or a cause.

Dust continuum and molecular lines answer different questions
| ALMA signal | What produces it | What it helps measure | How it contributes to a ring interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dust continuum | Thermal radiation from dust grains in circumstellar material | Dust distribution, relative brightness and the location of warm or concentrated solid material | Shows the projected morphology of dust; a ring-like enhancement must be checked against geometry and other tracers |
| CO molecular lines | Rotational emission from carbon monoxide in the gas | Gas distribution, composition and line-of-sight motion | Tests whether the dust feature has a corresponding gas structure and reveals expansion or other dynamics |
| SiO molecular lines | Emission from silicon monoxide in the circumstellar gas | Gas chemistry and conditions in regions where SiO is present | Provides a chemically distinct comparison with CO and can show that different molecules occupy different parts of the envelope |
| Isotopic molecular variants | Transitions from isotopologues of observed molecules | Additional information about composition and optical-depth effects | Helps test whether an apparent structure is consistent across related tracers |
No single map answers every question. Continuum data are sensitive to the dust component, while a line cube preserves both position and velocity for a selected molecule. Interpreting a ring requires the combination that the target’s brightness, chemistry and dynamics support.

CO as a broad gas tracer
CO is commonly used to follow the molecular gas in an evolved-star wind. Its emission can outline the envelope beyond the brightest dust and provide a velocity field for the outflow. If the CO channels show systematically expanding material centered on the star, a ring or shell can be related to an episode of mass loss. If the velocities instead indicate a directed flow or rotation, the same projected ring may have a different origin.

SiO as a chemistry-sensitive tracer
SiO forms part of the chemical inventory close to the star and in the dust-forming environment. Its distribution need not match CO because chemical reactions, condensation onto grains and local physical conditions affect where SiO remains observable. Comparing SiO with CO and the continuum can identify zones where dust formation or gas processing is especially active.

Why multiple tracers matter
A feature that appears in only one tracer may reflect that tracer’s excitation or chemistry rather than a complete mass enhancement. Conversely, a structure repeated in continuum and several molecular lines is harder to explain as an imaging artifact or a line-specific effect. The strength of the conclusion comes from the agreement among independent observables and from a model that reproduces both morphology and velocity.
ATOMIUM: a concrete example of ALMA’s evolved-star scope
The ATOMIUM project illustrates how a coordinated ALMA program studies evolved-star winds without treating its survey design as a ring census. Its official project description reports observations of oxygen-rich AGB stars and red supergiants with the 12-meter array. The program mapped molecular emission and continuum to investigate wind chemistry, dynamics and dust formation.
| ATOMIUM parameter | Reported value |
|---|---|
| Target sample | 17 oxygen-rich AGB stars and red supergiants |
| Frequency coverage | 27 GHz spanning 213–270 GHz |
| Molecular inventory | 24 molecules mapped |
| Array described | ALMA 12-meter array |
Those figures describe the program’s sample and observing coverage. They do not state how many targets contain rings, nor do they establish that rings are universal among evolved stars. A particular ring claim still depends on the published images, line profiles, target geometry and physical interpretation for that star.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA practical workflow for reading an ALMA ring image
- Identify the data type. Determine whether the panel is dust continuum, a single molecular transition, an integrated line map or a velocity channel. The caption should name the molecule and transition when line emission is shown.
- Locate the stellar position. Check where the central star is marked and whether the apparent ring is centered on it. An offset structure may be a one-sided arc, a companion-related feature or unrelated emission along the line of sight.
- Inspect the beam and scale bar. The synthesized beam indicates the angular resolution. A narrow-looking ring only a beam wide is less securely resolved than a broad annulus spanning several beams.
- Compare continuum and lines. Look for correspondence between the dust morphology and CO, SiO or other molecular maps. Note where a tracer is absent as well as where it is bright.
- Read the velocity information. Examine channel maps or a position–velocity diagram. Expansion, rotation and bipolar motion produce different spatial changes with velocity.
- Check the stated interpretation. Decide whether the authors identify a shell, torus, arc, spiral-like pattern or another geometry, and whether that conclusion is supported by the available tracers rather than by shape alone.
Common mistakes when interpreting rings around dying stars
- Assuming every evolved star has a ring. Ring-shaped distributions are target-specific structures. Many envelopes may be asymmetric, clumpy, bipolar or too faint to resolve into a ring.
- Calling the image a photograph of dust grains. Continuum brightness is thermal emission from the combined grain population. ALMA does not resolve individual grains in these observations.
- Equating a ring with a planet or companion. A companion can be one possible explanation in some systems, but a ring alone does not prove one. The evidence must include target-specific kinematics, morphology and other measurements.
- Ignoring projection. A three-dimensional shell or torus can appear as an ellipse or pair of bright limbs when viewed at an angle.
- Treating survey size as ring prevalence. The ATOMIUM sample of 17 targets and its 24 mapped molecules describe observing scope, not a statistic for how common rings are.
- Reading chemistry as a simple brightness map. Molecular emission depends on abundance, excitation, temperature and optical depth. A faint line does not necessarily mean that no gas is present.
What the observations tell us about stellar evolution
When continuum and molecular-line data are interpreted together, ALMA connects a visible structure in the envelope to the star’s mass-loss history. The location and thickness of dust emission indicate where solids are concentrated; CO and other lines reveal how gas moves through and beyond that region; SiO and related molecules add chemical context close to the dust-forming zone. Repeated shells or arcs can preserve evidence of changing outflow conditions, while mismatched gas and dust morphologies show that chemistry and dynamics evolve as material travels outward.
The most defensible conclusion from a ring-shaped ALMA feature is therefore specific: this target contains material arranged in a ring-like or shell-like distribution at the observed resolution, with the detailed geometry and origin constrained by its continuum, molecular and velocity data. Extending that result to all dying stars would go beyond what these observations establish.
