How Alkyl Carboxylic Acids and Alkyl Boronic Acids Cross-Couple

A 2026 Nature Chemistry study reports a way to join alkyl groups from alkyl carboxylic acids and alkyl boronic acids through radical–radical cross-coupling. Its key design combines redox-matched alternating-polarity electrolysis with controlled activation of redox-active species. The result is a carbon–carbon bond-forming method aimed at a difficult selectivity problem: making radicals from two different precursor types react with each other rather than taking competing pathways.

What the reported reaction does

The main transformation couples an alkyl carboxylic acid with an alkyl boronic acid to form an alkyl–alkyl carbon–carbon bond. The authors describe the process as direct radical–radical cross-coupling: both partners are activated to generate reactive radical species, which then combine.

The paper’s abstract characterizes its approach as integrating “redox-matched alternating-polarity electrolysis with controlled activation of redox-active species.” In practical terms, the electrochemical polarity is managed as part of the reaction design, while activation is controlled to coordinate the two reactive partners. This description captures the central strategy; the abstract alone does not provide enough detail to reconstruct electrode settings or a laboratory procedure.

Why pairing two radicals is challenging

Radicals are highly reactive, short-lived intermediates. When a reaction generates radicals from two distinct precursors, the desired cross-coupling must compete with each radical reacting with itself or following other pathways. The study frames selective coupling of two transient radicals as a particular challenge, in contrast with approaches that pair a persistent radical with a transient one.

Redox matching and alternating-polarity electrolysis are presented as a way to address that coordination problem. The publication reports the strategy and its reaction classes, but a quantitative comparison with photoredox, metallaphotoredox, or other electrochemical methods cannot be made from the abstract alone.

Other reaction types reported

Beyond the principal acid–boronic acid coupling, the authors report several extensions. These establish the types of chemistry explored, not a complete account of the method’s scope or performance.
