Alexey Kljatov’s snowflake rig paired a Canon PowerShot A650 compact camera with a Helios 44M-5 lens mounted in reverse. A short wooden board and a bracket held the two optics in alignment; for backlit snowflakes on glass, he added extension rings to set the working distance. It was a clever solution for that particular camera-and-lens combination, not a universal attachment for modern cameras.
How the homemade macro rig worked
The magnification came from combining the compact camera’s zoomed lens with a reversed vintage lens acting as an external magnifier. Kljatov mounted the Helios 44M-5 with its rear element facing the snowflake and its front element toward the camera. The PowerShot A650’s extended lens was aligned against the Helios lens.

In the configuration described in the 2013 construction account, Kljatov set the camera to maximum optical zoom—6× on the A650—and used autofocus rather than the camera’s macro mode. The reported focus behavior belongs to that specific setup; it should not be taken as a setting or result that will transfer to other cameras.
What the original build included
- Support: A narrow wooden board approximately 30 cm long.
- External lens: A Helios 44M-5 fixed to the board in reverse, with its rear element facing the subject.
- Camera alignment: The extended camera lens was placed against the Helios lens, with the A650 at maximum optical zoom.
- Camera fixing: A screw through the board engaged the camera’s tripod socket, while a metal bracket steadied the opposite side.
- Light and weather shielding: A black plastic skirt around the lens-to-camera junction helped block stray light and protect the connection from snow, ice and waterdrops.
The board, screw and bracket mattered because the two optical systems had to stay aligned. In the original account, Kljatov described the arrangement this way: “I attach the camera by a screw and additionally with metallic bracket, glued to the board, it holds opposite side of camera, so it didn’t move anywhere.” That is his description of the historical build, not a tested assembly guide for other equipment.

Choose a background and lighting approach
Kljatov used two documented approaches. One puts a snowflake on glass and shines light through it from behind; the other places the snowflake on dark wool and uses natural light. They create different looks and require different arrangements.

The 2013 profile/interview reports both methods but does not provide a controlled comparison of image quality or performance. For the backlit-glass approach, an LED flashlight is the documented basic light source; no particular model was identified as tested.

What to take from the build today
The construction is useful as an example of optical experimentation: a reversed lens, a zoomed compact camera and a rigid support produced the magnification, rather than a conventional macro lens mounted in its usual orientation. But the Canon PowerShot A650, Helios 44M-5 and Zenit rings are historical components in this account. Their current availability and compatibility with other camera systems have not been established.

Where the earlier setup began
Before building the external-lens attachment, Kljatov reportedly used the Canon’s built-in macro mode and a cut plastic bottle as a simple support. The later rig replaced that improvised support with the board-mounted reversed lens arrangement. This progression explains the homemade character of the project: it grew from adapting available equipment, rather than from a standard kit designed to fit many cameras.
