The hair takes shape while it dries, rather than being wound around a conventional curling iron’s heated barrel. Dyson Airwrap and Shark FlexStyle guides show how this works in practice, but their instructions differ: Dyson says to start with damp hair, while Shark recommends hair that is about 80–90% dry.
What makes an air-wrapping tool curl hair?
An air-wrapping styler directs air along a barrel. In the Dyson Airwrap instructions, that airflow attracts hair to the barrel and wraps it around without the user twisting the device. Shark’s FlexStyle guide describes its Auto-Wrap Curler as using airflow to pick up the ends and wrap the strand. In both examples, the hair is held around the barrel while it dries, then released.

That is the key difference from the familiar curling-iron method. With a conventional iron, you wind hair around a heated barrel and use the barrel’s heat to shape it. With an air-wrapping tool, airflow helps position and wrap the strand, and drying it in that wrapped position gives it shape. Airflow does not mean the tool uses no heat: the manufacturer instructions include heat settings and recommend a cool shot before releasing the curl.
Dyson calls the effect used by its Airwrap the Coanda effect. That is Dyson’s name for the mechanism it describes; it should not be treated as a claim that every air styler uses identical technology or works in precisely the same way. The shared practical idea in these two guides is narrower: airflow draws hair to a barrel, the barrel holds it in a curl shape as it dries, and the user releases it after a cool shot.

How the wrapping process works, step by step
- Prepare a section. Detangle and section the hair according to the instructions for the exact tool. The two manufacturers specify different starting dampness, so do not assume one rule fits both.
- Present the ends to the barrel. Hold the section near its ends and bring them toward the barrel. The airflow should draw the loose ends in and carry the strand around it.
- Let the strand wrap. As the section catches, move the tool toward the head while it continues wrapping. Dyson says not to twist the machine; Shark’s guide describes the airflow automatically picking up the ends.
- Dry the wrapped section. Keep the hair around the barrel for the time specified by the product instructions, or until it is dry where the guide uses that direction.
- Use the cool shot, then release. Apply the recommended cool airflow before turning off the device and letting the curl go. The cool-shot timing is not the same in the two guides below.
The barrel is not simply a passive surface in this process: it gives the strand a shape to follow while the airflow dries it. But it is still important to follow the model’s settings and instructions. The cited guides do not establish a universal time, heat level, or dampness that will work for every tool or hair type.
Dyson Airwrap and Shark FlexStyle: what their guides specify
These products make useful examples of the category because their manufacturers publish distinct curl instructions. Their directions are not interchangeable, and the comparison below is about preparation and technique—not a ranking of results.
| Instruction | Dyson Airwrap guide | Shark FlexStyle guide |
|---|---|---|
| Starting hair condition | Damp hair | Slightly damp, approximately 80–90% dry; the guide says hair that is too wet is more difficult to curl |
| How to wrap | Bring the ends of a section toward the barrel, let the hair attach, and move the tool toward the head without twisting it | Position the ends at the barrel and use the recommended high heat and airflow; move the wand toward the head as the hair wraps |
| Hold before cooling | About 15 seconds or until dry | About 10 seconds |
| Cool shot | 5–10 seconds | About 10 seconds |
| Release | Turn the device off, then release the curl | Turn the unit off and pull the barrel down to release the curl |
| Other guidance in the cited instructions | A smaller barrel can help create a longer-lasting curl; Dyson also recommends using a product with hold | Smaller sections may make wrapping easier; the guide mentions optional setting or holding spray and direction-specific barrels |
Exact attachments, controls, and included parts depend on the model generation and the bundle sold in a particular market. Check the instructions and product listing for the exact tool you own or plan to use before assuming it has a particular barrel, direction option, or setting.

How to use an air-wrapping tool without combining incompatible instructions
Dyson Airwrap technique in the cited guide
- Section damp hair and choose the airflow and heat settings for the device.
- Hold one section near its ends and bring the ends toward the barrel until the airflow catches them.
- Let the strand wrap and move the tool toward the head without twisting the device.
- Hold the section for about 15 seconds or until it is dry.
- Use the cold shot for 5–10 seconds, switch the device off, and release the curl.
Dyson’s guide also recommends a product with hold. It says a smaller barrel can help make a longer-lasting curl, but that is manufacturer advice, not a guarantee of how long a curl will hold for a particular person.
Shark FlexStyle technique in the cited guide
- Detangle and section hair that is slightly damp—about 80–90% dry according to Shark’s guide.
- Hold a small section near the ends and position it at the barrel.
- Turn on the recommended high heat and airflow so the ends wrap, then move the wand toward the head as wrapping continues.
- Hold for about 10 seconds, use the cool shot for about 10 seconds, and turn the unit off.
- Pull the barrel down to release the curl.
Shark’s guide says smaller sections allow easier wrapping and mentions optional setting or holding spray. If the tool has direction-specific barrels, use the attachment and direction appropriate to the curl you want, following that model’s instructions.
What to check when hair does not wrap
If a section will not catch, first check the setup rather than assuming the tool is defective. The troubleshooting suggestions below follow the manufacturers’ published directions; they are not a promise that one adjustment will solve every wrapping problem.

- Check dampness against the model’s guide. Dyson specifies damp hair; Shark recommends hair about 80–90% dry and says hair that is too wet is more difficult to curl. Do not transfer one product’s starting condition to the other.
- Try a smaller section. Shark explicitly says smaller sections can wrap more easily. This is the clearest manufacturer-published adjustment for a strand that does not catch.
- Bring the ends close to the barrel. The wrapping starts when the loose ends are presented to the airflow. Hold the section near its ends and let the air pick them up before moving the tool toward the head.
- Use the prescribed airflow and heat settings. Shark’s guide calls for recommended high heat and airflow during wrapping; Dyson’s guide tells users to select airflow and heat settings. Consult the manual for your particular model rather than guessing at a universal setting.
- Check the attachment and its direction. Barrels and direction controls can vary by model or bundle. If your instructions call for a particular barrel or direction, use the compatible attachment specified for that model.
Once the hair is wrapped, hold it for the timing in that tool’s guide and use its cool-shot instruction before release. A strand that is released while it is still being dried has not followed the full process described by these manufacturers.

Why the cool shot and drying time matter
Both product guides place a cool shot after the wrapped section has been held around the barrel. Dyson’s documented sequence is about 15 seconds or until dry, followed by a 5–10 second cold shot. Shark’s is about 10 seconds of holding and about 10 seconds of cool air. Those figures describe each manufacturer’s guidance; they are not a single category-wide timing rule.
Keeping the strand on the barrel while it dries is part of the method, and the cool shot is part of the release sequence. If you change either step, you are no longer following the specific sequence described by that product’s guide. The available manufacturer instructions do not establish that a certain number of seconds will produce the same curl or hold for every person.

Does an air-wrapping tool avoid heat damage?
No blanket conclusion that air-wrapping tools are damage-free follows from these instructions. The guides describe airflow, heat settings, drying, and cool shots; they do not provide independent comparative results showing how much damage these tools cause relative to curling irons across hair types and use patterns. Air-wrapping is a different styling method, not proof that heat is absent or that damage is impossible.
Dyson’s product material includes claims about styling damp hair without “extreme heat damage” and about avoiding heat damage. Those are manufacturer claims, not independent findings established by the cited usage instructions. It is more accurate to say that Dyson describes its technology as intended to style with less reliance on extreme heat than to promise that using it cannot damage hair.
What this method can—and cannot—tell you about results
The instructions explain how to make a strand wrap and when to release it. They do not establish a guaranteed curl duration, a universally suitable setting, or which of the two products produces better curls. Dyson’s smaller-barrel and hold-product suggestions, and Shark’s smaller-section and optional spray suggestions, are practical manufacturer recommendations rather than controlled comparisons.

That distinction is useful when choosing a tool or setting expectations. If you want to know whether a particular bundle includes a specific barrel, whether an attachment fits your model, or which controls your version offers, verify those details for the exact model and market. The category label alone does not guarantee identical attachments or instructions.
How to choose the right instructions for your tool
- Identify the exact model and generation, not just the product family name.
- Use its manual for dampness, airflow and heat settings, barrel direction, holding time, and release technique.
- Check that a barrel or other attachment is compatible with that exact model before using it.
- Treat advice about smaller sections, barrel size, and hold products as model-specific manufacturer guidance, not a universal rule.
The most reliable mental model is straightforward: airflow brings the strand to the barrel, the strand dries while held in a curl shape, and a cool shot comes before release. The details that make that sequence work—especially starting dampness and timing—belong to the individual tool’s instructions.
