How AI Video Generators Work: Text Prompts, Models, and Rendering Explained

AI video generators turn a written description into moving images by converting the prompt into numerical conditioning, generating or predicting a compressed video representation, and decoding that representation into frames. In diffusion systems, the process usually starts with noise and removes it over many steps; other systems generate frames sequentially. The difficult part is not making one plausible frame, but keeping subjects, objects, lighting and motion coherent from frame to frame.

This guide follows the pipeline from prompt to rendered video, explains the model architectures behind it, shows how wording affects motion and camera behavior, and identifies the limits you should expect from current systems.

What happens between a text prompt and a video?

A text-to-video model does not read a sentence and place its words directly onto a canvas. A text encoder converts concepts such as “red bicycle,” “rainy street” and “slow tracking shot” into numerical representations. Those values condition a generative model, which produces a video representation that matches the concepts as closely as its training and design allow.

Runway’s explainer describes a common diffusion pipeline: start with random noise in a compressed latent space, repeatedly predict and remove noise while using the prompt as guidance, then decode the result into ordinary video frames. This is a teaching model rather than a universal recipe. OpenAI describes Sora as a diffusion transformer operating on spacetime patches of video and image latent codes, while Runway has also published a temporally causal, frame-by-frame autoregressive approach. The components and order can differ between products.

The result is therefore a learned prediction, not a deterministic animation of every noun in the sentence. Prompt wording changes the probabilities used by the model; it cannot guarantee an exact object count, physically correct motion or persistent identity.

The generation pipeline, step by step

1. Encode the text prompt

The system first tokenizes the prompt and passes it through a text encoder. The encoder produces vectors representing subjects, actions, attributes, relationships and sometimes camera or timing instructions. “A yellow kayak crosses a foggy lake at sunrise” supplies concepts for the kayak, lake, fog, light and movement. The model uses the resulting numerical conditioning rather than the original words themselves.

Prompt encoders and their language coverage differ by product. Google’s Veo 3.1 Gemini API documentation states that English is fully supported and that other languages have not been evaluated, so non-English prompts may produce variable results in that version. Check the live documentation for the service and model version you are using: Google’s Veo 3.1 documentation.

2. Create an initial video representation

In a diffusion design, the starting point is often random noise rather than a finished scene. The noise is arranged in a latent representation that includes spatial information (what is in each image) and temporal information (how images relate across time). Working in this compressed space is less expensive than calculating every full-resolution pixel at every stage.

OpenAI’s description of Sora explains the use of spacetime patches: small blocks spanning portions of an image or video across space and time. Treat these patches as the model’s working units, not as visible squares in the exported movie.

3. Denoise or predict the sequence

A diffusion model performs repeated denoising steps. At each step it estimates which part of the current noisy representation is unwanted and which direction would make it better match the prompt and learned visual patterns. Early steps establish broad composition and motion; later steps add edges, textures and smaller details. The exact number of steps, scheduler and guidance settings are implementation details that many consumer interfaces hide.

An autoregressive model takes a different route. It predicts the next frame or chunk from earlier frames and the conditioning text, then continues forward. Runway’s research on temporally causal generation describes this frame-by-frame strategy and warns that errors can compound as the sequence grows: a small identity or position error in one frame can influence later predictions.

4. Enforce relationships across space and time

Images require relationships within one frame; video requires those relationships plus continuity between frames. Transformer layers can attend to locations across space and time, helping the model associate a person’s face, clothing and position as the shot advances. The model is trying to preserve these associations, but temporal consistency remains a significant engineering challenge rather than a guarantee.

Typical failure symptoms include a hand changing shape, text on a sign mutating, an object disappearing and reappearing, or a shadow moving inconsistently with its subject. Longer clips, rapid camera moves, occlusion and multiple interacting objects make the problem harder because the model must retain more state while inventing plausible unseen details.

5. Decode the latent result into frames

Once the latent sequence is complete, a decoder converts it into standard image frames. A service may then apply upscaling, frame-rate conversion, stabilization, interpolation or other finishing operations. These stages can improve smoothness or delivery resolution, but they cannot reliably repair a subject that was already inconsistent in the generated latent sequence.

The final file is encoded in a delivery format chosen by the product. Resolution, duration, frame rate, aspect ratio, audio support and download options are product-specific controls, so consult the service’s current output documentation rather than assuming that all generators expose the same settings.

Why temporal consistency is the central challenge

A still-image model can succeed if one frame looks convincing. A video model must make many individually plausible frames that also agree with one another. It has to preserve identity, geometry, lighting, camera motion and cause-and-effect relationships while the scene changes.

  • Identity: a person’s face, clothing, hairstyle or accessories should remain recognizable.
  • Object permanence: a cup, vehicle or character should not vanish without an occlusion or a stated action explaining it.
  • Motion continuity: trajectories, body movement and camera paths should progress rather than jump.
  • Appearance continuity: colors, textures, shadows and reflections should change for a reason.
  • Scene geometry: perspective and the relative positions of objects should remain believable as the camera moves.

These goals compete with the model’s need to invent detail. When a prompt leaves a region unspecified, the generator fills it using learned patterns. Those guesses can vary from frame to frame, especially when the region is briefly hidden or the camera moves quickly.

Diffusion transformers and autoregressive generators

There is no single architecture shared by every video service. The two approaches described in the cited material illustrate the main design trade-off.

Approach How it generates Strengths Known difficulty
Diffusion, often with a transformer Begins with noise in a latent video representation and repeatedly denoises it under text conditioning. Can reason over a complete space-time representation during refinement; latent processing reduces the cost compared with full-pixel generation. Requires multiple refinement steps and still must maintain temporal consistency.
Temporally causal autoregressive Predicts frames or chunks sequentially from earlier output and conditioning information. Natural frame-by-frame continuation and causal timing. Errors can compound as later frames depend on earlier predictions, as discussed in Runway’s research on instant video generation.

OpenAI says, “Similar to GPT models, Sora uses a transformer architecture, unlocking superior scaling performance.” That is OpenAI’s characterization of its own system, not an independent ranking of video models. Architecture alone does not tell you which product will follow a particular prompt best; training data, conditioning methods, sampling, post-processing and interface controls also matter.

What a prompt can control

A useful video prompt specifies more than a subject. Runway’s Text to Video Prompting Guide and Gen-4 Video Prompting Guide advise describing motion, camera work and temporal progression clearly. Apply that advice as guidance, not as a promise of exact compliance.

Subject and setting

Name the primary subject, its important attributes and the environment. “A small brass robot with a blue backpack walks through a cluttered workshop” gives the model more useful anchors than “a robot.” Mention only details that matter; a long list of conflicting adjectives can dilute the main action.

Action and temporal progression

Use an explicit verb and, when useful, a sequence: “The cyclist starts stationary, pedals forward, turns left and exits the frame.” This gives the model a temporal order instead of a collection of unrelated nouns. Avoid asking for several major actions that would require incompatible staging in a short clip.

Camera behavior

State whether the camera is locked, handheld, panning, tilting, tracking, orbiting or zooming. Pair the camera instruction with the subject’s movement: “A slow dolly follows the runner from the side” is more actionable than “cinematic movement.” Camera terminology is interpreted through the model’s learned examples, so results can still vary.

Look, lighting and atmosphere

Describe visual treatment after the core action: overcast daylight, tungsten practicals, shallow depth of field, documentary realism or stop-motion texture. These descriptors influence color and texture, but they do not override physical or temporal constraints.

Keep text and fine details realistic

Small lettering, logos, hands and intricate mechanical interactions are difficult because they require both spatial precision and frame-to-frame stability. If legible text is essential, plan to add it during editing rather than relying on the generator to reproduce it consistently.

A practical prompt-to-render workflow

  1. Define the deliverable. Choose the approximate duration, aspect ratio, subject, action and intended use. A short B-roll plate has different needs from a character close-up.
  2. Write one primary action. Start with the subject and setting, then state one clear movement or camera move. Add a second beat only if the clip is long enough to support it.
  3. Add temporal language. Describe how the shot begins, changes and ends. Include entrances, turns, pauses or exits that matter to the edit.
  4. Generate a baseline. Keep other settings stable so you can tell whether a change in wording helped. Save the prompt and model version with each result.
  5. Inspect the entire clip. Check identity, object permanence, motion, lighting, camera path and any text. Do not judge only the first frame.
  6. Revise one variable at a time. If the camera is wrong, simplify the camera instruction; if identity drifts, reduce competing actions or use an image/reference workflow when the product supports one.
  7. Use extension or editing tools when available. Google’s Veo 3.1 API documentation lists both text-to-video and video extension. Extension can continue an established shot, but it does not guarantee that newly generated material will preserve every detail.
  8. Render the final output. Confirm resolution, frame rate, duration, aspect ratio and any audio or watermark behavior before incorporating the file into a production timeline.

Where text-to-video works best—and where it does not

Text-to-video is well suited to exploratory visuals, atmospheric establishing shots, abstract motion, concept visualization and B-roll where exact continuity is not the main requirement. Runway’s prompting documentation specifically notes that text-to-video can suit B-roll or background plates when precise character or scene consistency is less important.

It is less dependable when a project requires a named actor to remain identical across many shots, exact product geometry, readable signage, precise choreography, legal or medical accuracy, or a repeatable camera move that must match existing footage. In those cases, look for controls such as reference images, image-to-video, masking, keyframes, camera parameters, seed management or video extension. The availability and behavior of these controls vary by service and version.

How to evaluate a video generator without a misleading ranking

The cited sources do not establish a universal performance ranking, and no general numerical statistic is supported for the generation process. Compare products using a fixed test prompt and clearly recorded conditions instead of treating a showcase clip as proof of overall superiority.

Evaluation axis Questions to ask
Input modes Does it accept text only, an image reference, an existing video, or an extension request?
Prompt and motion control Can you describe camera movement, timing, shot length and negative constraints, and are those controls documented?
Temporal consistency Does the subject keep its identity and geometry throughout the full clip, including occlusion and camera movement?
Output controls Which duration, resolution, frame-rate and aspect-ratio options are available, and what processing is applied after generation?
Editing and extension Can you continue, replace or mask part of a shot without regenerating everything?
Language support Which prompt languages are documented and evaluated for the specific model version?

Run the same prompt several times where possible. A single successful sample demonstrates possibility, not reliability. Record the model name, version, settings and date because services change their models and interfaces.

Common failure modes and practical fixes

The subject changes identity

Reduce the number of simultaneous actions, describe the subject’s defining attributes once, and keep the shot shorter or more static. If the product offers a reference image or image-to-video mode, use it for identity-critical work.

The camera ignores the instruction

Use one concrete camera verb, place it next to the subject action, and remove decorative language that competes for attention. Test a locked camera first, then add movement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Objects appear or disappear

State when an object enters, leaves or becomes occluded. Simplify crowded scenes and avoid asking the model to track many small objects at once.

Motion looks physically wrong

Describe contact and cause (“the wheel rolls as the bicycle moves”) and choose a slower, simpler action. Rapid interactions and complicated collisions are difficult for current generators to maintain.

Text is unstable or unreadable

Keep signs and labels out of the generative step when possible. Add typography in a conventional editor, where spelling, layout and persistence can be controlled deterministically.

Later frames degrade

This is especially consistent with the error-compounding behavior documented for sequential autoregressive generation. Shorten the shot, simplify the action, or create several shorter clips and assemble them in editing rather than forcing one long continuous generation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What the model is—and is not—simulating

Video generators learn statistical relationships among images, motion, language and scene structure. Their outputs can look as though they understand gravity, object permanence or a camera operator, but visual plausibility is not the same as a verified physical simulation. A model may produce a convincing splash without consistently preserving the water’s volume, or a realistic walk whose foot placement slips when the view changes.

That distinction matters for high-stakes uses. Treat generated footage as synthetic media requiring human review, especially when it depicts real people, safety procedures, evidence, scientific demonstrations or events that viewers could mistake for recorded fact. The model’s confidence is not a substitute for source verification.

The short answer

AI video generation usually follows this chain: encode the prompt into numerical conditioning; create or predict a compressed space-time representation; refine it through diffusion or generate it sequentially; enforce relationships between frames; decode the latent result into frames; and apply delivery processing. Prompt clarity helps, but temporal consistency is an engineering limitation shared in different forms by current systems. Diffusion transformers, autoregressive generators and other designs can all produce useful clips, yet no architecture guarantees perfect continuity or faithful interpretation of every instruction.

For a model-specific explanation, see Runway’s overview of how AI video generation works, OpenAI’s Sora: Creating video from text and Video generation models as world simulators, plus the current Veo 3.1 API documentation.
