Sony’s new Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) is an optional AI-upscaling graphics feature announced for the standard PlayStation 5. Sony says it analyzes game images pixel by pixel to add detail and improve image stability. It is not an automatic upgrade for every PS5 game, and the announcement does not quantify its visual or performance gains.
What QSSR does
QSSR is Sony Interactive Entertainment’s AI-upscaling technology for PS5. In its October 1, 2026 announcement, Sony described it as a new performance tier of AI upscaling: the system analyzes game images pixel by pixel and upscales them, with the aim of producing more detail and a steadier image. Sony’s announcement says QSSR uses a streamlined neural network and an implementation hand-tuned for PS5 performance.

In practical terms, upscaling processes an image so it can be presented at a higher output resolution than the image being processed. AI-based methods use a trained neural network to infer or reconstruct image detail. Sony has not disclosed QSSR’s model architecture, the resolutions it takes as input or produces as output, or other technical details needed to describe its exact operation.
What QSSR may improve—and what is not established
Sony’s stated targets are added image detail and improved stability. These are intended benefits described by the company, not published independent test results. The announcement reports no measurements of detail gains, reductions in shimmer or flicker, or other artifact changes.

Upscaling is not the same as rendering every scene at the final output resolution. Depending on a game’s implementation, an upscaler may help present a sharper-looking image, but its results can vary with the scene and the game’s graphics settings. Sony has not said what internal render resolutions QSSR will use, so there is no basis yet to claim a particular resolution increase or improvement for every supported title.
Which PS5 games support QSSR?
Sony names Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games patched to offer QSSR, each as an additional graphics option. Sony says the library will be offered broadly to PlayStation developers; that means developers can adopt it, not that every PS5 game will include it. The announcement does not provide a complete list of supported games.

Because QSSR is offered as a game graphics option, support and the available settings depend on each title’s implementation. Sony has not announced a per-title frame-rate effect, so the feature alone does not establish whether a game will run faster, maintain a particular frame rate, or make a trade-off between visual quality and performance.

How QSSR differs from PSSR on PS5 Pro
Sony distinguishes QSSR, its new performance tier for standard PS5, from PSSR, which it calls the gold standard on PS5 Pro. That is Sony’s product positioning, not a measured head-to-head comparison. The announcement offers no controlled comparison, benchmark figures, or like-for-like image-quality results that would show how much better one is than the other.

How to judge QSSR in a supported game
For a useful comparison, use the same game, scene, and display settings with QSSR on and off. Separate still-image detail from image behavior during movement: fine edges may look different in a static frame than they do when the camera or objects move.
- Look at fine detail in both still and moving scenes.
- Watch for image stability, shimmer, or flicker rather than judging sharpness alone.
- Note any frame-rate behavior, but do not assume a change is caused by QSSR without comparing the same graphics mode and scene.
- Record the console, game patch, graphics mode, and display or output settings so the comparison is meaningful.
This is a way to evaluate a particular game, not a report of measured QSSR results. Sony has not published the title-specific data needed to predict what those comparisons will show.
