It interprets a question, finds potentially relevant material, and uses a generative model to summarize information—sometimes with links or citations so you can inspect the sources. The details vary by product: Google Search, ChatGPT search, Gemini grounding, and Microsoft Copilot do not all use the same sources or workflow.
How does AI search work?
Think of AI search as two connected jobs: finding information and composing an answer. The system may retrieve pages or other material first, then give that context to a model that writes a response. Some products can also run additional searches as they work, so retrieval and generation do not always happen as a simple, one-way sequence.

- It interprets your question. A conversational query can be treated as a request about meaning and context, not just as a set of exact keywords. Microsoft says Copilot Search uses AI to interpret context, relationships, and meaning while also supporting traditional keyword queries (Microsoft Copilot Search).
- It looks for evidence. A system can search a web index, use other search providers, or draw on sources made available through a product. Google describes its Search generative features as using retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), also called grounding, with its core Search ranking systems to find relevant, up-to-date pages. Google also documents “query fan-out”: a model generates related searches to retrieve a broader set of useful results. ChatGPT search, by contrast, says it uses third-party search providers and content supplied directly by partners (Google on AI in Search; OpenAI on ChatGPT search).
- It combines retrieved information with available context. Depending on the product and its settings, that context may include public web pages, partner material, organizational data, or files a user attaches. Microsoft identifies work data, the web, and attached content as possible Copilot grounding sources; which ones are available can depend on account and administrator settings (Microsoft 365 Copilot grounding).
- A model writes a synthesized response. Google says its systems review information from retrieved pages to generate an answer, while Microsoft describes grounding as anchoring Copilot answers in work and real-world information. The resulting prose is generated synthesis, not necessarily a verbatim extract from a source or a sentence supported in full by one displayed link (Google on AI in Search; Microsoft 365 Copilot grounding).
- It may show links or citations. Links let readers follow the trail to pages used or considered relevant. ChatGPT search provides links and a Sources view; Gemini API grounding can return citation annotations connected to answer text; Google describes prominent clickable links to relevant pages. The display and level of detail differ by product (OpenAI on ChatGPT search; Gemini API grounding; Google on AI in Search).
Where do AI search answers come from?
There is no single source pool for AI search. One answer may be grounded in public web pages; another may also draw on partner-provided material, a connected workplace account, or a file supplied by the user. A product’s settings and access controls determine what it can use. For example, Microsoft documents web, work data, and attached content as possible grounding sources, while OpenAI says ChatGPT search draws on third-party search providers and partner-supplied content (Microsoft 365 Copilot grounding; OpenAI on ChatGPT search).

Even when an answer includes a web citation, the citation is a clue to provenance—not proof that the linked page supports every clause, or that the model represented it correctly. The model has synthesized its response from available context, and products can differ in how they select, combine, and present sources.

Why does an AI search answer link to these sources?
A citation or source link is intended to help you inspect information behind a generated answer. Google describes links to pages relevant to an AI answer; ChatGPT search offers source links and a Sources view; Gemini API grounding can associate citation annotations with answer text. Those interfaces are not identical, and a link may not make clear which exact words or claims it supports (Google on AI in Search; OpenAI on ChatGPT search; Gemini API grounding).
Do not assume every sentence is copied from a linked page, or that a single citation substantiates the whole answer. The citation is most useful as a starting point for checking the underlying evidence.
Are AI search citations reliable?
They can help you verify an answer, but they are not a guarantee of accuracy. OpenAI warns that web citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect, and identifies fabricated citations and factual errors as possible language-model failures. Google says AI Overviews can make mistakes and recommends checking supporting links and other results. Microsoft says grounding can improve relevance, but readers should still review sources; answers may be outdated when based on old pages or files (OpenAI ChatGPT search help; Google AI Overviews help; Microsoft 365 Copilot grounding).

- Open the linked page and confirm it actually states the claim.
- Check the page’s publication or update date when the information can change.
- For important decisions, compare the claim with another authoritative source rather than relying on a generated summary alone.
Why do AI search products give different answers?
Products can differ in their indexes, partner sources, retrieval steps, account access, and answer-generation systems. Google says its systems determine when AI Overviews are useful; Microsoft notes that Copilot source availability can vary with subscriptions and administrator settings. A different answer does not by itself reveal which product is right: the systems may have retrieved different evidence or synthesized it differently (Google AI Overviews help; Microsoft 365 Copilot grounding).

Public documentation explains some product behavior, such as Google’s query fan-out and grounding, but does not disclose every ranking weight, internal prompt, or source-selection rule. Treat a purported universal formula for getting an AI answer to cite a particular page as unverified unless a specific provider documents it.

Google’s guidance for its own Search generative features builds on its core Search ranking and quality systems. A page must be indexed and eligible for a Search snippet and meet the stated feature conditions, but Google does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or serving. It recommends crawlable content and points site owners to a Search Console generative AI performance report for visibility in Search and Discover. This is Google-specific guidance, not a promise about every AI assistant (Google Search guidance for AI features).

For ChatGPT search, OpenAI says website eligibility requires allowing OAI-Searchbot to crawl the site and ensuring the host or CDN permits traffic from OpenAI’s published IP addresses. Eligibility does not guarantee placement in search results (OpenAI on ChatGPT search). These are access and eligibility requirements, not a recipe for forcing an answer to cite a site.
