Short answer: an AI model aggregator can promise not to train on your prompts while a downstream model provider still retains or trains on the same request. Privacy therefore has two separate layers: the aggregator that receives and routes your request, and the provider that actually runs the model.
To judge an aggregator for confidential work, inspect the exact endpoint’s current retention and training policy, the data controls enabled on your account, the treatment of files and metadata, and any enterprise contract. “No training” and “zero data retention” are meaningful only when they apply to the provider handling that particular request.

What happens to a prompt sent through an AI aggregator?
A routed request normally follows four stages:
- You send the request to the aggregator, including text, system instructions, attachments or media, and account or billing information needed to process it.
- The aggregator selects an endpoint. You may choose a model and provider, or an automatic router may choose among available providers.
- The selected provider runs the model. Your prompt and any inference input must be transmitted to that provider. Its own logging, retention, training and abuse-monitoring rules now matter.
- The response returns through the aggregator. The aggregator may retain the response, associated metadata or temporary copies according to its settings and policy.
This means the aggregator is a privacy intermediary, not necessarily the operator of every model it exposes. A statement about the intermediary cannot, by itself, describe what each downstream provider does.

OpenRouter’s privacy policy, last updated August 31, 2026, says: “OpenRouter does not use your Inputs or Outputs for model training.” The same policy explains that OpenRouter cannot control training by a model provider after data has been transmitted to a provider that permits such use. The first sentence describes OpenRouter’s own practice; it is not a blanket promise for every model endpoint available through OpenRouter.

A provider can have a different policy from the service that routed your request. For a confidential prompt, you must therefore read both the aggregator’s policy and the selected provider’s current data-practice disclosure.
Do AI aggregators train on your prompts?
There is no industry-wide answer. Aggregators and providers make separate choices about whether prompts and outputs are used for model training, fine-tuning, evaluations, abuse detection or service improvement. No authoritative industry statistic establishes what percentage of aggregators train on user data or what the average retention period is.
Aggregator-level training
OpenRouter states that it does not use inputs or outputs for model training. Its documentation also describes private input/output logging and OpenRouter use of inputs and outputs as off by default. Those are controls on OpenRouter’s own systems, not a guarantee about an external provider.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsProvider-level training
OpenRouter documents provider-specific data policies and filtering. Some providers store and train on customer inputs and outputs, sometimes with an opt-out control. The account-wide data-policy filter can be used to select models or providers that commit not to use data for training. You still need to verify that the chosen route satisfies your requirement at the moment of use; model availability and provider policies can change.
Hugging Face’s Inference Providers security documentation gives a different example of the boundary. It says Hugging Face does not store user data for training and does not store request bodies or responses when routing requests. It also says debugging logs may be kept for up to 30 days and that external providers are responsible for their own security measures and data policies. The “up to 30 days” period is specific to that documentation and is not an industry average.

How long can an aggregator keep your data?
“Retention” is not one timer. Prompt text, output text, request metadata, uploaded files and temporary media can follow different lifecycles. OpenRouter’s data-collection documentation illustrates these distinctions.
| Data category | Documented aggregator behavior | What remains provider-specific | Practical check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prompt and output content | Private input/output logging and OpenRouter use of inputs and outputs are off by default; users can change applicable controls. | The model provider may retain content or use it for training, evaluation or improvement. | Check the selected provider’s retention and training commitment, not only the aggregator setting. |
| Request metadata | Token counts and latency are stored for reporting and ranking. | Other operational, abuse, billing or diagnostic records may follow the provider’s policy. | Determine whether metadata itself can identify a customer, project or usage pattern. |
| Persistent uploaded files | Retained until you delete them or close the account, subject to legal, security, compliance, cached-copy and backup exceptions. | A provider receiving a file may apply a different retention period. | Delete files after use and obtain the provider’s file-handling terms before uploading sensitive material. |
| Image, audio and video inputs used for inference | Described as non-persistent beyond routing time, except where needed for abuse detection, security, billing or legal compliance. | The downstream provider’s handling can differ. | Ask whether the media is copied, cached or retained at the endpoint. |
| Anonymous prompt categorization | Described as using a zero-data-retention policy. | This does not establish zero retention for the underlying inference request. | Confirm that the label applies to the feature and route you are using. |
Metadata retention can exist even when content logging is disabled. Token counts and latency may be enough to reveal workload size, timing or the existence of a sensitive project, so they should be included in a threat assessment.
Is “zero data retention” real when several models are involved?
It can be real for a defined layer and route, but it is not a universal property of an aggregator. Zero retention must be scoped to the exact data type, service, provider, account setting and exception language.
Questions that define the scope
- Does zero retention cover prompts, outputs, attachments, embeddings and media, or only request bodies?
- Does it apply to the aggregator, the downstream provider, or both?
- Are abuse detection, security, billing, legal holds, cached copies or backups excluded?
- Are logs retained without content, and can those logs still identify your account or request?
- Does automatic routing preserve the same guarantee if it switches providers?
- Is the setting enabled by default, account-wide, route-specific or controlled by an enterprise contract?
A route through multiple providers cannot be treated as zero-retention merely because the first service does not store request bodies. Every provider that receives the data must make a compatible commitment, and temporary processing or legally required records may still be exceptions.

1. Provider transparency
Prefer a service that identifies the provider behind each endpoint and exposes current retention and training practices. A generic “we protect your data” statement is less useful than a provider-specific policy with a revision date and clearly defined data categories.

Look for zero-retention routing, non-training filters, opt-out settings and a way to disable content logging. Confirm whether automatic routing honors those controls or can fall back to a provider with weaker terms.
3. Content retention
Read separate provisions for prompts, responses, files and media. A service may avoid storing text while retaining uploaded files until account closure, or may keep media temporarily for security or billing.
4. Metadata and operational logs
Ask what is recorded for token accounting, latency, ranking, debugging, abuse prevention and billing. The Hugging Face example specifies debugging logs for up to 30 days while stating that request bodies and responses are not stored; that combination is materially different from full content logging.
5. Contractual protection
For regulated or contractual workloads, review the data-processing agreement, enterprise terms, deletion commitments and permitted subprocessors. A contract can define obligations and remedies, but it does not remove your responsibility to select a provider whose technical behavior matches the contract.

6. Change management
Check the policy’s last-updated date, how changes are announced and whether you can audit the route used for each request. Provider practices and available controls are changeable; an old screenshot or procurement promise is not evidence of the current route.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to verify before sending a confidential prompt
- Classify the information. Separate public text from trade secrets, personal data, credentials, regulated records and material subject to a customer or employment confidentiality obligation.
- Identify the exact route. Record the model, provider, region or edition when shown, and whether routing is manual or automatic.
- Open the current policies. Read the aggregator’s privacy and logging documentation and the provider’s data-use terms immediately before use.
- Enable the strongest available controls. Turn off content logging, select a non-training or zero-retention policy filter, and confirm that the setting applies to the chosen endpoint.
- Inspect file and media behavior. Do not assume that a prompt guarantee covers attachments. Check persistence, deletion and backup exceptions.
- Minimize the payload. Remove names, account numbers, keys and unnecessary context. Replace identifiers with consistent placeholders before routing.
- Preserve evidence. Save the policy version, setting and provider selection that applied to the request so your security or legal team can later verify the decision.
If the provider policy is unavailable, ambiguous or inconsistent with your obligations, do not send the confidential material. Use a route with documented controls or process the information in an environment whose terms you can verify.
What if a sensitive request was already sent?
First determine which aggregator, provider and route handled it, then record the time, model and account. Review both policies for deletion controls and retention exceptions. Delete persistent files and stored conversations where the service allows it, and ask the provider or enterprise administrator for a deletion confirmation when the data is subject to a contractual or regulatory requirement.
Rotate any credentials, tokens or secrets included in the prompt; deletion is not a substitute for revocation. If personal or regulated data was exposed, follow your organization’s incident-response and notification procedures. Keep in mind that cached copies, backups, abuse records or legal holds may survive an ordinary user deletion request when the policy says they can.
Enterprise agreements: useful, but not automatic protection
Enterprise terms can specify permitted processing, deletion deadlines, confidentiality duties and audit rights. They are especially important when a provider stores or trains on inputs and outputs under a default commercial policy. However, the documented enterprise approach still places responsibility on the customer to select zero-data-retention or non-training options where required.
Best Value
Procurement should map the contract to the actual technical route: the provider named in the agreement, the models employees can select, the account-level filters in force, and the treatment of files and metadata. A contract that covers one provider does not automatically cover a second provider reached through automatic routing.
Common privacy mistakes and their fixes
Relying on the aggregator’s headline promise
Mistake: treating “the aggregator does not train” as a downstream guarantee.
Fix: verify the provider’s current training and retention policy for the endpoint.
Confusing no content storage with no logging
Mistake: assuming that disabled prompt logging means no records exist.
Fix: account for token counts, latency, debugging, billing and abuse-detection records.
Applying text rules to files
Mistake: uploading a sensitive document because prompt text is covered by a zero-retention setting.
Fix: review persistent-file and media clauses separately, including cache and backup exceptions.
Assuming a label never changes
Mistake: relying on a provider’s previous privacy badge or a policy read months ago.
Fix: check the revision date and capture the terms immediately before a sensitive request.
Which AI aggregator is safest?
There is no permanently safest aggregator independent of route and use case. The safer choice is the service and provider combination that gives you a current, specific non-training or zero-retention commitment, enforceable controls, transparent metadata handling and contractual coverage appropriate to your data.
OpenRouter’s no-training statement for its own inputs and outputs, its provider-policy filter and its documented distinctions among content, metadata, files and media make the decision inspectable, but they do not eliminate provider-side risk. Hugging Face’s statement that it does not store request bodies or responses when routing, alongside debugging logs of up to 30 days and independent external-provider policies, demonstrates the same principle from another architecture.
Recommended Free Tools
For ordinary, non-sensitive prompts, a documented route with clear controls may be sufficient. For trade secrets, personal data or regulated records, require provider-level evidence and an enterprise agreement where appropriate; otherwise redact the material or keep it out of an aggregated route.
