AI can speed up finance analysis and automate routine work, but it does not remove the need for finance professionals. Its outputs still need to be checked against reliable data, interpreted in business context and governed with clear responsibility. That is what makes verifiable expertise more valuable: not simply producing an answer, but being able to explain why it can be trusted and what should happen next.
What AI can do—and what finance teams still have to do
AI can help finance teams analyze information and automate work. But a model’s output is not automatically accurate, relevant or appropriate for a decision. Finance professionals remain responsible for understanding the underlying data, checking whether a result makes sense and recognizing when an unusual case needs human judgment.

Deloitte describes finance roles increasingly applying business context to model outputs and using human judgment when exceptions arise. That shifts emphasis from routine execution toward review and interpretation; it does not make finance knowledge obsolete. The change also requires teams to define roles, handoffs, governance and accountability around automated work. Deloitte: AI’s impact on the future of finance.

AI adoption depends on more than choosing a model. Data quality, staff capability and the ability to connect information across systems all affect whether an output can be relied on. In a 2026 global survey of 1,600 finance professionals, ACCA and CA ANZ reported the following barriers to better data use:
#1 Best Overall

A great choice for home finances, business professionals, and accountants.
| Reported barrier | Share of surveyed finance professionals |
|---|---|
| Data quality issues | 42% |
| Lack of appropriate skills | 42% |
| Difficulty integrating multiple sources | 40% |
These figures describe respondents to that joint survey, not all businesses, and they identify reported barriers rather than proving that any one barrier causes poor AI outcomes. They illustrate why teams need to examine the data and process around an AI tool, not just its generated answer. ACCA and CA ANZ: Bridging skills and data gaps for AI-enabled finance.
What verifiable expertise looks like in daily work
Expertise becomes verifiable when colleagues can trace how an output was produced, assess its limitations and see who is responsible for acting on it. In practice, that means making the reasoning and checks part of the workflow rather than treating review as a last-minute sign-off.

- COMES COMPLETE: Comes with a protective slide cover, quick reference guide, pocket user's guide, two long-life batteries, and 1-year warranty
- Check the inputs. Confirm that the source data is appropriate, sufficiently complete and consistent with the question being asked.
- Test plausibility. Compare an AI-generated result with known business conditions, prior periods or other relevant evidence; investigate material discrepancies rather than accepting a fluent explanation at face value.
- Make assumptions visible. Record relevant definitions, exclusions and assumptions so another reviewer can understand what the result does and does not represent.
- Interpret exceptions. Assess unusual or out-of-pattern results in their business context. A model can flag an anomaly without establishing its cause or the right response.
- Assign ownership. Make clear who reviews the output, who resolves exceptions and who is accountable for the final finance decision.
These practices turn a model result into an auditable contribution to analysis, not an unexamined substitute for professional judgment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhich skills become more important
As routine tasks are automated, the value of finance expertise increasingly lies in deciding whether an output is fit for purpose and communicating what it means. ACCA and CA ANZ identify critical thinking, skeptical validation and contextual storytelling as important protections against automation bias, anchoring bias and deskilling.

- Large Screen Display: This calculator features a 12-digit display screen with clear and large numbers to improve work efficiency and calculation accuracy
- Dual Power Supply: Powered by both solar energy and AAA battery for reliable operation in various lighting conditions
- Portable Foldable Design: The foldable design saves space and allows you to carry it conveniently in your bag or pocket wherever you go
- Versatile Applications: Suitable for financial accounting, students, business activities, and office use with multiple calculation functions
- Advanced Calculation Functions: In addition to basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, this calculator can perform sum calculations and tax rate calculations
- Critical thinking helps a reviewer challenge an answer that appears inconsistent with the underlying evidence or business reality.
- Skeptical validation means checking the result instead of treating automation as proof of correctness. The OECD describes automation bias as excessive trust in machine-produced results.
- Contextual communication helps finance professionals explain implications and uncertainty to decision-makers, rather than passing along a number without its meaning.
- Data stewardship and AI literacy help teams recognize relevant data and governance risks and use tools appropriately. Training can be one response to capability gaps, but it does not replace sound controls or clear accountability.
These capabilities matter because a confident-looking output can still rest on unsuitable data, miss a relevant exception or be misread by a decision-maker. OECD: Supervision of artificial intelligence in finance.
How to organize review and accountability
Human involvement should be designed for the specific finance process and its risks, rather than added as a vague approval step. The OECD identifies governance and data management as supervisory challenges and emphasizes considering human involvement in context. Deloitte likewise points to the need to design roles and handoffs around automation.

- Define the decision. Specify what the AI-assisted process is intended to support and what falls outside its scope.
- Set review triggers. Identify the kinds of uncertainty, exception or discrepancy that require additional review or escalation.
- Name the owners. Assign responsibility for data quality, output review, exception resolution and the final decision.
- Keep a reviewable record. Preserve enough information about inputs, assumptions, checks and decisions for an authorized colleague to understand the result later.
- Revisit the controls. Review whether the process remains suitable as data, tools, responsibilities or business needs change.
Controls should match the decision being supported. A model output used for preliminary analysis may call for a different review path from one used in a consequential financial decision; the sources support contextual human involvement, not a universal review rule for every use.
What changes—and what does not
| Work dimension | With AI in the workflow | What finance expertise contributes |
|---|---|---|
| Routine execution | Some analysis or recurring work may be automated. | Review of exceptions and assessment of whether the process is working appropriately. |
| Raw output | A model produces a result or analysis. | Validation, assumptions and business interpretation that make the result usable. |
| Handoffs | Automation changes how work moves between people and systems. | Explicit ownership of review, escalation and final decisions. |
| Tool use | AI becomes part of a finance process. | Governance and data controls suited to that use and its risks. |
This comparison describes a practical way to think about changing responsibilities, not a measured maturity scale or a claim that every finance team has adopted the same operating model. The sources support a general case for accountable human expertise; they do not establish that AI improves every finance process or changes every role in the same way.
