AI can make test automation smarter by drafting unit-test scaffolds, suggesting edge cases, and helping teams extend tests around legacy code. It does not make a test correct simply by generating it: developers still need to check assertions against requirements, run the tests, and keep normal review and quality gates.
How AI helps with test automation
AI coding tools can use source code and existing tests to suggest tests for a function, surface cases such as null or empty inputs, and scaffold coverage for code that has little or no test history. They can also help developers interpret behavior from nearby tests and suggest ways to connect tests to a CI/CD workflow. These are documented use cases for GitHub Copilot, not proof that generated tests are correct or that any team will see a guaranteed quality improvement. The tool is most useful when it has relevant context: the code under test, intended behavior, existing test conventions, and the branches or edge cases that matter. Without that context, a plausible-looking test can encode the wrong behavior or miss an important case.

It can produce useful tests, but generated output needs validation. A 2024 empirical study by Khalid El Haji, Carolin Brandt, and Andy Zaidman assessed 290 Copilot-generated tests for 53 sampled tests from open-source Python projects. Approximately 45.28% of the generated tests passed when Copilot was used within an existing test suite. In the study’s separate condition without an existing suite, 92.45% of generated tests were failing, broken, or empty. These are study-specific results—not a general accuracy score for AI tests, current tools, or other languages. The authors’ TU Delft record describes the study and sample: Using GitHub Copilot for Test Generation in Python: An Empirical Study.

The contrast indicates that test-suite context can matter, but it does not prove that context alone caused the difference. The sampled projects and study setup also shaped the results. A passing test is not automatically a meaningful one: it may assert the wrong outcome, duplicate existing coverage, or leave important behavior untested.
A practical workflow for using AI to write tests
- Choose a narrow target. Start with one function or module rather than asking for tests for an entire application.
- Supply the relevant context. Include the implementation, intended behavior, existing test conventions, and any documented requirements. State the branches and edge conditions to cover, such as empty input, invalid values, boundary values, or expected errors.
- Ask for focused tests. Request test code in the project’s existing framework and naming style. Ask the tool to explain what each test verifies; treat the explanation as a review aid, not evidence that the test is right.
- Review every assertion. Check that expected values follow from real product requirements and documented behavior. Do not ask the model to guess undocumented business rules.
- Run the tests in the normal environment. Fix syntax, imports, fixtures, and setup problems; then check whether the test actually fails when the relevant behavior is changed or broken.
- Submit through ordinary review and CI. Keep human code review, repository permissions, and quality gates in place. Edit or discard tests that are irrelevant, brittle, redundant, or hard to maintain.
- Measure the pilot’s value. Track useful tests accepted, defects found, review time, and maintenance burden—not merely the number of tests generated. These are practical evaluation measures, not published outcome figures.
GitHub’s documentation cautions developers to review generated test logic, cover edge behavior, avoid relying on Copilot to infer undocumented business rules, and retain human code review. GitHub’s guidance

What adoption figures do—and do not—show
Adoption surveys show that teams are trying AI in testing, but they do not establish test quality or universal impact.

- Katalon’s 2025 State of Software Quality Report: The publisher reported that 76% of respondents used AI-powered tools in software testing, 82% saw AI as critical to testing’s future, and 56% of QA teams still struggled to keep up with testing demand. These are Katalon-reported survey results, not an independent census or proof that AI resolves the workload problem. Katalon report
How to evaluate tools and team readiness
Do not choose a test-generation tool by raw output volume alone. Compare how well it fits the whole workflow:
Rank #3
- Context: Can it use relevant source code, requirements, and existing tests?
- Test quality: Are assertions relevant and edge cases appropriate to the actual behavior?
- Integration: Does the output fit the team’s language, test framework, repository, and CI pipeline?
- Review and maintenance: Can developers understand, edit, version, and maintain the tests?
- Governance: Do permissions, privacy controls, and review practices suit the organization?
- Measured value: Does a limited pilot reduce effort or reveal useful defects after review and maintenance costs are counted?
DORA’s 2025 report, drawing on more than 100 hours of qualitative data and responses from nearly 5,000 technology professionals worldwide, characterizes AI as an amplifier of organizational strengths and dysfunctions. Its abstract puts it this way: “AI’s primary role in software development is that of an amplifier.” The finding argues against treating AI as an automatic quality fix; weak requirements, poor review practices, or fragile tests can also be amplified. Google Research/DORA, 2025 State of AI-assisted Software Development Report
MITRE’s January 4, 2024 overview of preliminary testing similarly emphasizes learning to use generative tools effectively and safely: “it is incumbent upon software developers to learn how to use AI tools effectively and safely.” It does not establish that AI removes the need for engineering judgment. Will AI replace QA testers?
The evidence here supports assistance with test creation and workflow tasks, not a claim that AI replaces QA roles. People still need to decide what behavior matters, assess whether an assertion reflects requirements, investigate failures, and maintain coverage as software changes. MITRE’s emphasis on effective and safe use and DORA’s amplifier framing both point to the continued importance of developer and QA judgment rather than an autonomous replacement. MITRE · DORA 2025
