How AI Is Reshaping Retail with Lightweight 3D and AR: What the Evidence Shows

Retailers are pairing two things: AI that personalizes discovery and assists shoppers, and 3D product models that can be reused for product-page viewers, marketing content and augmented reality (AR). Walmart and Zalando both describe working deployments. Their reported gains are company or vendor claims, though, and no independent, market-wide estimate isolates what AI plus lightweight 3D/AR adds to retail results. This article covers what each layer does, what the published numbers do and don’t prove, and which products suit AR.

Keep the layers separate: AI, the 3D asset, and AR

These terms get blurred in coverage, and the blur hides where the value comes from.

  • AI helps make, select or deliver things: personalized homepages, a support assistant, or automated steps in a content pipeline.
  • The 3D asset is the model. Deloitte defines it as a three-dimensional digital model of a physical product that can be interacted with in AR or VR.
  • AR is one way a shopper views digital content in their own surroundings. Deloitte’s “augmented shopping” covers digital experiences that let customers try on, try out, interact with or personalize a product virtually.
  • WebAR is, in Deloitte’s words, “AR experiences delivered via a web browser, without the need to download a third-party application.”

A model does not need AR to be useful, and AR does not need AI. The combination matters because AI can lower the cost of producing assets and decide who sees what, while one good asset can serve many channels.

What “lightweight” can and can’t mean here

None of the sources define a standard file size, polygon count or rendering threshold for “lightweight” retail 3D, so treat any such number you see quoted as a vendor choice, not an industry rule. The practical meaning supported by the evidence is about access and reuse. Experiences should open in a browser without an app install (the WebAR definition above). A single digital asset should also be able to feed product pages, try-on, campaigns and several platforms, as Zalando’s content lead describes below.

Where retailers use AI beyond chatbots

Walmart’s October 9, 2024 announcement, “Walmart Reveals Plan for Scaling Artificial Intelligence, Generative AI, Augmented Reality and Immersive Commerce Experiences,” shows how wide the term is. The company describes:

  • AI-driven content selection for personalized homepages;
  • a customer-support assistant that can act on orders and returns, not just answer questions;
  • AI and generative AI tools across its retail technology stack;
  • ten AR experiences powered by Retina across Walmart U.S. and Sam’s Club.

Suresh Kumar, Walmart’s global chief technology officer and chief development officer, framed the strategy this way in that announcement: “A standard search bar is no longer the fastest path to purchase, rather we must use technology to adapt to customers’ individual preferences and needs.” That is a strategic view from an executive, not a measured finding.

Walmart reported a 10x increase in customer and member adoption of those AR experiences, plus reduced return rates and improved conversion. It published no absolute conversion or return rates, so the effects can only be read as directional. A “10x” increase from a small base is also a different thing from a large share of shoppers using AR.

  • 62G — LIGHT ENOUGH TO FORGET — At just 62g, with three nose-pad sizes and flexible temples, the a01+ stays comfortable through a long movie or flight, even lying down.

Nintendo Switch/Switch 2 and older (Lightning) iPhones need an adapter. For long phone sessions, add the XREAL Hub to charge and watch at once.

How one 3D asset becomes many kinds of content: the Zalando example

NVIDIA’s case study “Digital Twins for Ecommerce: Zalando and Allsides” is the clearest published look at the production side. Footwear is scanned into a digital twin, and that twin feeds interactive 3D product views, packshots, lifestyle imagery, videos and AR try-on through a shared pipeline.

The case study stresses that this is not “generative AI makes a shoe.” The workflow uses controlled multi-view photometric scanning, GPU-accelerated reconstruction and quality checks. AI sits inside a larger capture and compute process, which is what makes the output consistent enough to trust as a product representation.

Matthias Haase, VP Content Solutions at Zalando, said in the case study: “When a single digital asset can be used across product pages, virtual try‑on, localised marketing campaigns and multiple platforms, it creates the most efficient, flexible and scalable content model.” ALLSIDES cofounder and CEO Franz Tschimben added: “By combining our 3D scanning technology with NVIDIA’s GPU‑accelerated AI infrastructure, we are unlocking entirely new possibilities for digital commerce and generative content creation with a focus on driving results and growth on the major metrics in ecommerce.” The second quote comes from a supplier and a partner promoting its own stack, and should be read that way.

Which products suit AR, and which don’t

The best question is what the shopper needs to judge before buying. Match the technology to that.

Category What the shopper needs to judge What the evidence shows
Furniture and home décor Scale and whether it fits the space Amazon’s seller guidance (June 18, 2025) describes “View in 3D” and “View in Your Room.” No independent measured lift is supplied.
Footwear Shape, appearance, how it looks on the foot Zalando’s scanned digital twins support product views, content derivatives and virtual try-on. It is a production case; it does not show that footwear results transfer to apparel.
Eyewear and beauty Appearance on the face Amazon lists virtual try-on for shoes and eyewear. Sephora and L’Oréal figures are historical and relayed by Deloitte.
Apparel Fit and fabric drape Harder to render convincingly. Deloitte describes Zara’s in-store AR clips as showing garments in motion rather than attempting body-accurate fitting.

The Amazon page is seller-facing and says it was produced with generative AI assistance. It shows which features Amazon offers and promotes, not independent proof of business impact.

How to judge a retailer’s or vendor’s AR claim

Use these checks before accepting a headline result:

  • Which metric moved? Time on page, add-to-cart, conversion and return rate are different outcomes. Engagement can rise without sales or returns changing.
  • What is the baseline? Look for a comparison group, a time window and a denominator. “10x adoption” or “tripled conversion” says little without them.
  • Who published it? A retailer’s announcement or a technology supplier’s case study has a reason to present favorable numbers.
  • What did it cost to make the asset? Capture time, cost per model, and fidelity and consistency across a catalog drive the economics. Zalando’s seven-minute scan belongs to a specialized pipeline.
  • Can one asset serve several channels? Reuse across product pages, ads and try-on is where the Zalando case locates its efficiency.
  • Can shoppers reach it easily? Browser delivery without an app download lowers friction, per the WebAR definition.

Implementation cautions

  • Start from the customer decision, not the technology. Deloitte notes that consumers still prioritize value, product and convenience. Novelty alone is not a reason to deploy augmented shopping.
  • Don’t assume generative AI alone yields accurate product twins. The documented footwear workflow depends on controlled capture and quality checks.
  • Don’t copy enterprise numbers into a small-business plan. Scan time, cost reductions and SKU volumes describe Zalando’s scale and its supplier relationships.
  • Treat old statistics as history. The Sephora, L’Oréal and device-count figures predate today’s tools and say little about current adoption.

What this adds up to

The credible shift is operational. AI personalizes what shoppers see and automates parts of asset creation, and a well-made 3D model can then serve product pages, marketing and AR try-on. The strongest case for lightweight 3D and AR is for products where shoppers must judge scale or appearance: furniture, shoes, eyewear and beauty. The weakest is where fit and drape dominate, as in apparel. Walmart and Zalando show that large retailers are building this in earnest. Neither proves a universal return, because the numbers are directional or supplier-reported and nothing yet pools them into an independent benchmark.
