It can take over some tasks, help people do others, and create new tasks or occupations. The employment outcome depends on how those changes balance out—and on how employers and workers manage the transition.
How does AI change work?
Work is made up of tasks, and AI can affect different tasks in different ways. The OECD identifies three channels: automating existing tasks, creating new tasks and occupations, and improving productivity. These channels can operate at the same time; their balance shapes the employment outcome. The OECD says AI can support productivity, economic growth and job opportunities, while displacement remains a risk if transitions are poorly managed. OECD, Skills in the AI Age (2026).

That distinction matters when asking, “Will AI take my job?” A useful first question is which parts of the role are exposed, not whether the job title is on a list. Exposure describes a possible interaction with AI; it is not a forecast of realized job losses.
Which jobs are at risk of automation?
The OECD’s topic overview says occupations at the highest risk of automation account for about 28% of jobs on average across OECD countries. This is an estimate of jobs in higher-risk occupations, not a prediction that 28% of jobs will be eliminated. The overview does not make this a global figure. OECD, Future of Work.

High exposure and high automation risk are not interchangeable. Some high-skill jobs may be exposed because they include tasks AI can affect, while still relying on non-routine cognitive or social abilities. Routine work can face different substitution risks. Effects also vary by sector, region, city and skill level, so a single occupation-wide label can hide important differences. OECD, Skills in the AI Age (2026).
What adoption figures can—and cannot—tell you
AI uptake among firms in OECD countries rose from around 7% in 2021 to 20% in 2025, according to the OECD. This measures firm adoption, not the share of jobs automated or the number of workers displaced. Adoption also does not by itself show how AI is used in a particular workplace. What skills will people need as AI changes work?
The International Labour Organization (ILO) says workplace AI adoption is reshaping demand for cognitive, socioemotional, digital and AI skills. It emphasizes adaptability and human agency: people need to be able to respond as work changes, not simply learn to use a particular tool. For a worker, a practical starting point is to look at the actual tasks in a role and build skills that help with the parts AI changes. For an employer, the same task-level view can guide training and work design:

- List the recurring tasks. Separate routine steps from work that depends on judgment, context, communication or collaboration.
- Identify the intended use. For each task, decide whether AI is meant to automate it, assist the worker, or support a new kind of work. Do not assume these uses have the same effects.
- Build relevant skills. Match learning to the workflow: digital and AI skills for using or assessing AI, and cognitive or socioemotional skills where the work calls for them. Adaptability helps as tasks evolve.
- Check the result in practice. Assess quality and reliability, worker discretion and job quality, privacy and data governance, accessibility and bias, training and support needs, and evidence of productivity or safety outcomes.
This is a way to assess a workplace change, not a promise that adopting AI will improve productivity, safety or jobs. Those outcomes depend on the use case and the conditions around it.
Will the effects be the same for everyone?
No. In a 5 March 2026 announcement, the ILO reported that female-dominated occupations are almost twice as likely to be exposed to generative AI as other occupations. The announcement links unequal exposure to occupational concentration, women’s underrepresentation in AI and STEM fields, and bias reflected in AI systems. It describes exposure—not a finding that women’s jobs will be lost at twice the rate. ILO announcement (5 March 2026).

Janine Berg, an ILO senior economist and report co-author, said: “The impact of generative AI on women’s jobs is not predetermined.” That observation points to an important distinction: exposure describes a risk or potential for change, while decisions about how AI is introduced shape what happens to workers.

How can workers and employers judge an AI change?
Before treating an automation forecast as a reason to eliminate a role—or assuming a new system will benefit workers—look at the specific workflow and the evidence for it. Useful questions include:

- Which tasks will the system automate, and which will it assist?
- How reliable is it for this task, and how will people handle errors?
- Does the change preserve or reduce workers’ discretion, and what does it do to job quality?
- How will sensitive information be protected, and who governs its use?
- Can people with different needs access and use the system? Have bias risks been considered?
- What training and ongoing support are required?
- What evidence shows an effect on productivity or safety in this workflow?
The OECD evidence does not establish one global net outcome for jobs across sectors and time horizons. It supports a more grounded conclusion: AI is changing tasks and skill needs, while the extent of displacement or opportunity depends on the technology’s use and the way transitions are managed.
