How AI Hedge Fund Situational Awareness Sold Stocks Under Lender Pressure

In late July 2026, AI-focused hedge fund Situational Awareness sold most of its public-stock portfolio to Citadel after heavy losses in technology holdings. Reuters reported that the fund’s portfolio value had fallen 67% during July, citing an investor letter. The reports do not establish that lenders had issued formal margin calls before the sale, or disclose its price and financing terms.

What happened to Situational Awareness’s stock portfolio?

Reuters reported in July 2026 that Situational Awareness agreed to sell the bulk of its public-equity portfolio to Citadel after steep losses in technology holdings. Bloomberg also reported that most public stocks had been sold, while noting that the fund retained private-company investments, including Anthropic, at the time of its report. “Most” or “bulk” matters: the available reporting does not establish that every public holding was sold.

The reported scale of the downturn was 67% — Situational Awareness investor letter, reported by Reuters, 2026. That figure describes the letter’s account of the portfolio-value decline for July; it is not a publicly audited performance statement.

How can lender pressure lead to a portfolio sale?

Leverage can magnify the effect of falling asset prices. When a fund borrows against investments, a decline in the value of those investments may weaken the collateral supporting its borrowing. A lender may then require more collateral, repayment, or a reduction in exposure, depending on the loan terms. Selling assets can raise cash or reduce risk, but a sale may also lock in losses.

This describes a general financing mechanism, not a verified account of Situational Awareness’s particular loan agreements. Reuters said it was unclear whether lenders had made formal margin calls before the fund agreed to sell. Its July reporting did not establish the timing or terms of any lender demands, the sale price, or whether the transaction involved a discount.

What a sale can accomplish—and what it cannot establish

  • Reduce exposure: transferring positions to a buyer can shrink a fund’s market risk quickly.
  • Address liquidity needs: proceeds may help meet obligations, but the reports do not disclose how sale proceeds were used in this case.
  • Leave important questions open: without disclosed transaction terms and financing agreements, the sale alone does not prove a formal margin call, a forced-sale discount, or lender misconduct.

What choices might a fund facing liquidity pressure weigh?

These are general financing alternatives, not a record of options formally offered to or considered by Situational Awareness. Their trade-offs depend on the fund’s agreements, available capital, market conditions, and how quickly cash is needed.

General option Potential advantage Key trade-off
Raise fresh investor capital Could add liquidity without immediately selling the whole portfolio. Whether investors would provide funds, and on the required timetable, is uncertain.
Sell positions in a negotiated block Can consolidate execution with a buyer and reduce exposure quickly. The price and terms depend on negotiation; Situational Awareness’s exact terms were not reported.
Sell positions gradually in the market Spreads execution over time. Leaves the seller exposed to further price moves and may be too slow if cash is needed urgently.

Why the fund’s March holdings filing does not show exactly what it sold

A 13F filing is a snapshot, not a live inventory. The Block reported that Situational Awareness’s filing for March 31, 2026, showed substantial positions in AI data infrastructure and bitcoin-mining-linked companies, including IREN, Core Scientific, Riot Platforms, CleanSpark, Bitdeer, HIVE Digital, and CoreWeave. Those are reported holdings on the filing’s snapshot date; they do not establish the number of shares held just before the July deal or which positions were included. The Block said the just-before-sale share count was unclear. A 13F also does not provide a complete account of a fund’s leverage or short exposure.

What happened after the Citadel transaction?

On August 21, 2026, Reuters reported that Citadel had reduced more than 80% of the aggregate risk from the original portfolio it acquired, citing a letter from Ken Griffin to investors. That describes Citadel’s later handling of the acquired positions; it does not reveal Situational Awareness’s sale price or the deal’s terms.

On August 24, Reuters reported that the SEC had sent subpoenas to banks working with Situational Awareness, seeking information about the fund’s trades and use of leverage. Reuters said the inquiry did not necessarily mean enforcement action would follow or that the banks themselves were investigation targets. A subpoena seeking information is not a finding that anyone violated the law.

In the same August reporting, Reuters quoted founder Leopold Aschenbrenner’s investor letter: “We came closer to permanent capital impairment than is acceptable to us.” That is the fund’s own assessment, not an independently verified measure of its losses.

What is known—and what remains uncertain

  • Reported: Situational Awareness sold most of its public-stock portfolio to Citadel in late July after heavy losses in technology holdings.
  • Reported with a specific attribution: Reuters said the investor letter put July’s portfolio-value decline at 67%.
  • Not established in the available reporting: whether lenders made formal margin calls before the sale, the precise transaction price and financing terms, and the exact share-by-share portfolio immediately before the deal.
  • Separate later developments: Citadel’s reported reduction of risk in the acquired portfolio and the SEC’s information-gathering subpoenas do not, by themselves, resolve those transaction details or establish wrongdoing.
