AI data centers are energy systems, not just rooms full of servers. Electricity runs the processors that train and serve models, then powers memory, storage, networking, power conversion, cooling, controls, and backup equipment. The amount drawn at a site depends on its hardware, utilization, cooling design, climate, reliability requirements, and grid connection.

For scale, the International Energy Agency (IEA) estimated that all data centers—not AI facilities alone—used about 415 TWh of electricity in 2024, roughly 1.5% of global electricity consumption. The IEA’s October 2026 update estimated 485 TWh for 2025 and projected about 950 TWh in 2030. Those are global estimates and a scenario-based projection, not a meter reading for AI workloads.

How much electricity do AI data centers use?

There is no authoritative global meter that separates AI electricity from every other data-center workload. Public totals generally combine AI training and inference with web hosting, cloud applications, databases, video, enterprise systems and other computing. The best-supported figures therefore describe the data-center sector as a whole and must be labeled by year and publication date.

Figure What it represents Qualification
415 TWh in 2024 Global electricity used by data centers IEA estimate published in 2025; includes non-AI workloads and is about 1.5% of global electricity use.
485 TWh in 2025 Global data-center electricity use IEA estimate in its October 2026 update; includes all workloads.
About 950 TWh in 2030 Global data-center electricity demand IEA 2026 scenario projection. The earlier IEA 2025 Base Case was about 945 TWh, showing that forecasts can be revised.
649 TWh in 2030 United States data-center electricity use Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) 2025 Reference Case; equivalent to 11.8% of forecast U.S. electricity use in that analysis.
521–843 TWh in 2030 United States data-center uncertainty range LBNL 2025 compounded uncertainty cases, not a global range and not a prediction of AI alone.

The figures cannot be compared as if they shared the same geographic boundary or method. The IEA numbers are global sector estimates; the LBNL numbers are U.S.-specific scenarios. A forecast also is not an operating measurement. Its outcome depends on assumptions about server efficiency, demand, utilization, construction, and the pace at which new connections become available.

The IEA summarizes the physical dependency plainly: “There is no AI without energy – specifically electricity for data centres.” AI is electricity-intensive because accelerators and their supporting systems run continuously or for long periods during model training and service.

What uses the electricity inside a facility?

An AI workload’s electrical path starts with the utility connection and ends as computation, heat, and losses. Servers are usually the largest component, but a facility’s total demand includes much more than the processor boards.

Servers and accelerators

Training and inference servers use CPUs, GPUs or other specialized accelerators, memory, local storage and high-speed interconnects. Training can run large clusters at high utilization for extended periods. Inference demand may fluctuate with user traffic, batching and latency targets. Utilization matters: a powered server that is waiting for work still consumes energy, and a cluster sized for peaks can spend substantial time below its maximum output.

Storage and networking

Models and datasets move between servers, storage systems and external users. Network switches, optical equipment, storage drives and their controllers consume electricity and add heat. A facility built for large-scale distributed training may require particularly dense networking so thousands of accelerators can exchange data quickly.

Power conversion and reliability equipment

Utility power is converted and distributed through transformers, switchgear, power-distribution units and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS). Conversion losses appear in the facility’s energy bill even though they do not perform computation. Backup generators, fuel systems and transfer equipment are installed to keep critical loads operating through grid interruptions; generators and UPS batteries are seldom used during ordinary operation, but their capacity and testing requirements affect facility design.

Cooling and environmental controls

Fans, pumps, chillers, cooling towers, computer-room air conditioners or air handlers, heat exchangers and control systems remove the heat produced by IT equipment. Lighting, security, fire protection and building controls add smaller loads. The ratio of total facility energy to IT energy is commonly expressed as power usage effectiveness (PUE); what is included in the boundary should be stated whenever facilities are compared.

Annual electricity is not the same as grid capacity

Three measurements are often confused:

  • Energy: terawatt-hours (TWh) describe electricity consumed over a period, usually a year.
  • Power: megawatts (MW) or gigawatts (GW) describe an instantaneous rate or a capacity.
  • Interconnection request: the maximum power a facility asks to receive at its grid connection point.

The LBNL 2025 report defines grid interconnection capacity as “The maximum amount of electrical power a data center requests from the utility or grid operator at its point of connection to the grid, typically established through a formal interconnection request.” That requested maximum includes IT equipment, cooling, other facility systems and design margins. It is not the same as the IT load, average draw or annual consumption.

Converting a requested MW figure into TWh requires assumptions about utilization, peak demand, redundancy, maintenance and operating schedules. For example, a facility with a high nameplate capacity may run below that level while it fills a cluster, while a smaller site with a high duty cycle may consume more annual energy than its headline capacity suggests.

How do AI data centers stay cool?

Most electricity entering a server becomes heat. Cooling keeps chips, memory and power electronics within operating limits and controls humidity and airflow so equipment remains reliable. The engineering choice affects electricity use, water use, available rack density and the site’s climate suitability.

Air-based cooling

In a conventional arrangement, fans move warm air from server racks through computer-room air conditioners or air handlers. Chillers cool water or another fluid, and that cooling loop removes heat from the air. A cooling tower may then reject heat outdoors. This architecture is familiar and can be effective, but fans and chillers consume power, and evaporative towers consume water.

Air-side and water-side economizers

When outdoor conditions are favorable, an air-side economizer uses suitable outside air to reduce mechanical refrigeration. A water-side economizer uses a heat exchanger and cooling tower to bypass or reduce chiller operation. These modes can lower chiller electricity and, depending on the design and climate, reduce water use. They are not available at every temperature, humidity or air-quality condition, so controls must switch safely between operating modes.

Direct liquid cooling

Direct liquid systems move heat from processors or other components into a circulating liquid loop, often through a coolant distribution unit. Liquid transfers heat more efficiently than air and can reduce fan requirements, enabling higher rack power densities. “Liquid cooled” does not automatically mean “water free”: the loop may still reject heat through a cooling tower, dry cooler, radiator or another heat-rejection system, and the coolant may require treatment or periodic replacement.

The IEA reports that cooling can account for about 7% of electricity in efficient hyperscale data centers and more than 30% in less-efficient enterprise facilities. Those percentages describe different facility categories and operating conditions; they are not a fixed share for every AI site.

How much water do data centers use?

Water impact depends on the cooling system, climate, workload, server efficiency, utilization and the water intensity of electricity generation. A site-water figure alone cannot describe the full water footprint.

Onsite water consumption

Evaporative cooling towers consume water through evaporation and blowdown, the discharge used to control mineral concentration. Air-cooled chillers can use little or no onsite cooling water, but often require more electricity than water-cooled alternatives. Economizer operation can reduce chiller load, water use or both when weather allows. Direct liquid cooling changes how heat is collected; its water outcome depends on the final heat-rejection equipment.

Water used to generate electricity

Power plants can consume water for cooling and other processes. A data center with low onsite water use may therefore be associated with substantial offsite water consumption through its electricity supply, while a water-intensive cooling system may reduce electricity use. Meaningful comparisons should report site water and, where data exist, water used in power generation.

Why there is no universal water-per-query number

A 2025 review by Lei, Lu, Shehabi and Masanet found more than a 10,000-fold variation in modeled workload-level water use across the cases it analyzed. The strongest determinants included server efficiency, electricity-grid water factors, utilization, cooling type, infrastructure efficiency, climate, the share of inactive servers and server refresh cycles. That result demonstrates sensitivity to assumptions; it is not evidence that every user query differs by 10,000 times. A credible per-query estimate must state the model, hardware, location, cooling boundary, electricity mix and workload.

Why can’t data centers connect to the grid faster?

AI facilities are geographically concentrated. A large project may seek hundreds of megawatts at one substation even when data centers remain a modest share of global electricity use. Local substations, transmission lines, transformers and cables can therefore become bottlenecks.

Interconnection queues and construction time

The IEA’s 2025 analysis estimated that around 20% of planned data-center projects could face delays without corrective action. It cited long, complex connection queues, transmission-line construction times of roughly four to eight years in advanced economies, and waiting times for critical components such as transformers and cables that had doubled over the previous three years. These are findings from that 2025 analysis, not a universal timetable for every project.

What a connection request must cover

Utilities and grid operators evaluate the requested maximum, expected load shape, redundancy, fault behavior and the upgrades needed to serve the site safely. The request must account for servers, cooling, power conversion and design margins, not merely the accelerator nameplate. A project can have equipment on order yet lack an energizable connection.

Onsite generation and flexible operation

The IEA’s October 2026 update reported that slow grid connections are prompting some U.S. developers to pursue onsite gas generation. Reliable onsite gas for a critical, variable load can require overbuilding generation relative to average demand, while turbine supply, permitting, emissions regulation, design and financing remain unresolved issues. Other approaches include storage, flexible workload scheduling and non-firm connections paired with demand response. Each requires operating rules, incentives and equipment that allow the facility to reduce or shift load when the grid needs it.

Where does the electricity come from?

A connected data center draws from the regional power system, whose generation mix varies by location and changes over time. The IEA’s 2025 analysis projected that renewables would supply close to half of additional global electricity demand through 2030 in its scenarios, with natural gas and coal also contributing and nuclear becoming increasingly important toward the end of the decade and beyond. Different scenarios produce different mixes.

Companies may sign power-purchase or other offtake agreements. Such a contract can support new generation or financial matching, but it should not automatically be described as physical, hourly and local delivery unless the agreement and grid arrangement establish those attributes. The electrons serving a facility at a given hour come from the interconnected system operating in that region.

How to compare two AI data centers or project claims

Use the same boundaries and labels before drawing a conclusion. The following checklist prevents the most common apples-to-oranges comparisons.

Comparison What to request Why it matters
Annual electricity vs. requested capacity TWh per year and MW/GW at the interconnection point, with utilization and redundancy assumptions. A peak request does not reveal yearly consumption.
IT load vs. whole-facility energy IT energy, total facility energy and PUE, including the systems inside the boundary. Cooling and power-distribution losses can materially change totals.
Cooling electricity vs. cooling water Climate-specific cooling energy, onsite water and, if available, generation-related water. Saving water onsite can increase electricity use and offsite water impacts.
Grid supply vs. onsite generation Physical connection, generator capacity, operating hours and fuel assumptions. Nameplate or backup capacity is not the same as electricity consumed.
Contracts vs. delivered power Contract type, location, time matching and whether delivery is physical or financial. Annual procurement claims may not describe hourly local supply.
Forecasts Publisher, publication year, base year, geography, scenario and uncertainty range. Forecast numbers are conditional and are revised as assumptions change.

What readers should take away

AI data centers use electricity in a chain: accelerators compute, networks and storage move data, power equipment converts and distributes energy, and cooling removes the resulting heat. Global totals such as the IEA’s 415 TWh estimate for 2024, 485 TWh estimate for 2025 and roughly 950 TWh projection for 2030 describe the whole data-center sector, not AI alone. Local grid effects are a different question: concentrated projects can encounter years-long queues and equipment shortages even when the global percentage appears moderate.

The most honest account of a facility states its annual energy, peak and requested connection capacity, IT-to-total efficiency, cooling technology, onsite and offsite water effects, location, operating assumptions and the date and scenario behind every forecast.
