AI coding assistants should augment—not replace—traditional security review. They can generate code, explain unfamiliar logic, suggest fixes and surface possible vulnerabilities. However, their security performance changes with the task, model, programming language, prompt and available repository context. A secure process combines secure-coding standards, automated analysis and tests, threat modeling, accountable human review, and documented triage.

The strongest evidence does not establish a universal winner between AI assistance and trained reviewers. One 2024 user study found potential security benefits in a particular Copilot experiment, while another 2024 evaluation concluded that large language models were not yet ready for automated vulnerability detection under its test framework. Those results are compatible: an assistant may help a developer in one workflow while failing as a stand-alone detector across broader security tasks.

What is actually being compared?

“AI security performance” is too broad to be a useful verdict. Code generation, vulnerability detection, vulnerability classification, explanation and repair are different tasks. A model that produces functional code has not demonstrated that it can find flaws in that code, and a model that identifies a possible flaw has not demonstrated that its proposed repair is safe.

The CoV-Eval benchmark frames the problem as a set of separate tasks—code completion, vulnerability repair, detection and classification—rather than one score for “secure coding.” Its research paper is useful because it shows why results should not be transferred from one task to another.

A fair comparison also has to hold the surrounding conditions steady. Compare the same code, dependencies, threat model and acceptance criteria, then report the assistant model and version, language, prompt, benchmark, date, number of trials and amount of human involvement. Repository-level context can produce a very different result from an isolated snippet.

Comparison axis Why it changes the security result
Task Generation, detection, classification, explanation and repair measure different capabilities.
Code context An isolated function hides architecture, data flow, dependencies and trust boundaries that are visible in a repository.
Security outcome Missed vulnerabilities, false alarms, severity calibration, exploitability and fix correctness matter more than functional output alone.
Human role A reviewer may verify a finding, reject an unsafe fix, add architectural context and record remediation.
Reproducibility Model updates, prompts and benchmark choices can shift results; a result without those details is difficult to repeat.
Operational fit Pull-request integration, review time, audit trails and alignment with secure-coding standards determine whether a method works in practice.

Can you trust AI-generated code to be secure?

No—not without verification. Generated code is a proposed change, not evidence that security requirements have been met. An assistant can produce plausible authentication, input-handling or cryptographic code while misunderstanding the application’s trust boundaries, authorization rules or business logic.

Security review must therefore ask questions that functional testing may miss:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Can an attacker control the input that reaches a sensitive operation?
  • Is authorization checked for the specific object and action, rather than only for a user’s general login state?
  • Does the code expose secrets, personal data, tokens or internal error details?
  • Do error paths, retries, logging and failure recovery preserve the security property?
  • Does a dependency, configuration value or generated default weaken the intended control?

These questions require application context. An assistant can help enumerate possibilities, but a human who understands the system remains responsible for deciding whether the control is correct.

What the empirical evidence shows

A 2024 user study found potential benefits, not a universal guarantee

A 2024 user-centered study of Copilot reported potential security benefits in its tested setting and called for more research on technically complex problems with security requirements. The result applies to that study’s participants, tasks and conditions; it does not establish that every assistant, developer population or security workflow becomes safer. A separate evaluation found automated detection was not ready

A different 2024 evaluation examined large language models across multiple dimensions and concluded that they were not yet ready for automated vulnerability detection under its framework. A fluent explanation, a confident severity label or a plausible patch is therefore not proof that a vulnerability is real—or that the repair closes it without creating another problem. See the IEEE Security & Privacy evaluation.

Research coverage is concentrated on detection

A systematic review of 208 peer-reviewed papers published from 2018 through August 2025 found that 91.3% focused on vulnerability detection, 11.1% on repair and 5.3% on explanation. These percentages describe the distribution of topics in the reviewed literature, not model accuracy, the proportion of AI-generated code that is vulnerable or the frequency of flaws in production. The review also identifies fragmented datasets as a barrier to meaningful comparison. Read the systematic review.

The imbalance matters operationally. Organizations often need all three capabilities: finding a problem, understanding its impact and applying a correct repair. A literature dominated by detection studies cannot by itself show that assistants can safely repair findings or explain them well enough for a reviewer to make a decision.

What traditional human review catches that automation may miss

Traditional review is not automatically perfect, but it gives a person responsibility for interpreting code in its real setting. A trained reviewer can connect an implementation to architecture diagrams, threat models, deployment configuration, incident history and business rules. That context is especially important for:

  • Authorization and business logic: whether a user may perform this exact action on this exact resource.
  • Trust boundaries: where data changes from untrusted to trusted, crosses services or enters privileged code.
  • Abuse cases: rate-limit bypasses, workflow manipulation, replay, enumeration and denial-of-service paths.
  • Secrets and sensitive data: whether logs, telemetry, caches or error messages disclose information.
  • Architectural assumptions: whether a control is enforced at every entry point or only in one convenient code path.

Human review also has limits. Reviewers can overlook defects, tire during large changes and apply inconsistent standards. That is why established practice layers peer or expert review with automated analysis, testing and documented remediation instead of treating any single technique as complete.

What an AI assistant is good at—and where it is risky

Use of an assistant Potential value Security risk to control
Explain a function or data flow Speeds orientation in unfamiliar code and creates review questions. The explanation may omit an implicit dependency, side effect or attacker-controlled path.
Suggest secure alternatives Offers candidate validation, error handling or API usage patterns. A suggestion may be incompatible with the framework, version or application threat model.
Inspect a change for vulnerabilities Provides an additional pass and can identify hypotheses for a reviewer to test. False negatives and false positives remain possible; confidence is not a measurement of correctness.
Classify severity Helps prioritize a long list of findings. Severity depends on deployment, exploitability, affected assets and compensating controls that may be absent from the prompt.
Generate a repair Reduces drafting time for a known issue. The patch may be incomplete, break a security invariant or introduce a new defect.
Write tests Expands test cases and can cover edge conditions quickly. Generated tests may assert the implementation rather than the security property and can miss attacker behavior.

Use the assistant to widen the set of questions and candidate changes. Use tests, analysis and human judgment to decide whether those candidates are correct.

How to build a layered security workflow

The following sequence aligns with the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Secure Software Development Framework (SSDF) and its developer-verification guidance. NIST distinguishes code review—where a person directly examines code—from code analysis, in which tools operate automatically or with a person. It recommends choosing review and analysis methods according to organizational policy and the software’s stage. Read NIST SP 800-218, SSDF Version 1.1.

  1. Define the security standard before coding. Set rules for input validation, authentication, authorization, secrets, dependency use, logging, cryptography, error handling and data protection. Define which changes require peer review, expert review, threat modeling or additional testing.
  2. Give the assistant bounded, accurate context. Supply the relevant files, interfaces, dependency versions, security requirements and trust boundaries. State what is outside the review scope. Never assume that an answer based on a snippet covers unseen code.
  3. Treat generated code and generated findings as proposals. Put assistant output through the same change-control process as human-written code. Do not merge a patch merely because it compiles or the explanation sounds authoritative.
  4. Run automated checks appropriate to the risk. Use static analysis, dependency and secret checks, unit and integration tests, fuzzing, web-application scanning where applicable, and black-box or structural tests. NIST’s developer-verification recommendations include threat modeling, automated testing, static code scanning, heuristic secret checks, built-in protections, historical tests, fuzzing and review of included code. See NIST IR 8397.
  5. Have a human review the change. The reviewer should trace attacker-controlled input to sensitive operations, check authorization and business rules, inspect error and recovery paths, and compare the implementation with the threat model. For high-risk components, use a security specialist or an independent review.
  6. Validate every proposed fix. Reproduce the finding where possible, add a regression test for the security property, rerun relevant analysis and inspect the complete diff. A fix that removes one warning but weakens another control is not remediation.
  7. Record and triage the result. Track the finding, affected code, severity rationale, owner, recommended remediation, verification evidence and disposition in the existing issue tracker or development workflow.
  8. Reassess after material changes. Re-run the applicable checks when dependencies, architecture, threat assumptions, model versions or security standards change.

NIST states the accountability requirement directly in SSDF PW.7.2: “Perform the code review and/or code analysis based on the organization’s secure coding standards, and record and triage all discovered issues and recommended remediations in the development team’s workflow or issue tracking system.”

How to evaluate an assistant in your own environment

Do not select a tool from a single impressive demonstration. Build a representative evaluation set from your languages, frameworks, repository structures and recurring vulnerability classes. Keep the conditions reproducible and compare the assistant with the existing review process, not with an undefined ideal.

Measure What to record Why it matters
Recall or missed findings Which known vulnerabilities the method failed to identify. A low miss rate is essential for a security gate; a persuasive report is not enough.
False-positive rate How many reported issues are not real or not actionable. Excess noise consumes reviewer time and can cause alert fatigue.
Severity calibration Whether labels match impact and exploitability in the tested environment. Mis-ranked findings distort remediation priorities.
Fix correctness Whether the patch closes the vulnerability, preserves behavior and avoids regressions. Repair quality is a separate capability from detection.
Context sensitivity Results for snippets, files and complete repositories with dependencies visible. Shows how much performance depends on information supplied to the model.
Human effort Review time, rework, verification steps and accepted versus rejected suggestions. A method that finds more issues but costs disproportionate effort may not improve the process.
Reproducibility Model and version, prompt, language, benchmark, date and repeated-trial results. Assistant behavior can change as products and models are updated.

Include seeded defects and real historical issues where disclosure and licensing permit. Separate detection from explanation and repair in the scorecard. Have reviewers label whether each output is correct, incomplete, unsafe or irrelevant, then preserve the prompts and model settings so a later version can be compared fairly.

Common failure modes and safeguards

Confusing fluency with correctness

Detailed prose can make a weak finding sound authoritative. Require evidence: the affected path, preconditions, exploitability reasoning, a minimal reproduction or test, and a reference to the exact code location.

Reviewing an incomplete scope

An assistant cannot infer hidden routes, configuration, infrastructure or services reliably. Declare the review boundary and separately inspect dependencies, deployment settings and integration points. AWS’s secure-code-review example for Amazon Nova explicitly instructs the model to assume the supplied code is the complete scope and not speculate about unseen code; that is a prompt-design safeguard, not independent proof of model effectiveness. See the Amazon Nova security-use-case example.

Accepting a generic fix

A recommendation such as “sanitize the input” is incomplete until the team defines the sink, the required encoding or validation, the accepted data format and the tests that prove the control works. Ask for a patch tied to the actual framework and then review the diff.

Leaking sensitive source into an external service

Apply the same data-classification and access-control rules to prompts that you apply to source repositories, logs and support systems. Remove secrets and unnecessary personal or proprietary data, and document which code may be sent to an assistant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Turning an assistant into an unreviewed merge gate

Use automated output to prioritize and block according to documented thresholds, but retain an escalation path for disputed findings and a human owner for high-impact changes. A model’s confidence score is not a substitute for a severity policy.

What NIST and other guidance imply for AI-assisted development

NIST’s SSDF does not present code review and code analysis as competing substitutes. It gives examples that include peer review, expert review for backdoors and malicious content, static analysis followed by human review and remediation, and checklists. The organization chooses the combination based on its standards and the software stage.

NIST’s generative-AI and dual-use foundation-model community profile extends that concern to the code used to build AI models and related components: policies for review and analysis should cover those components where applicable. Read NIST SP 800-218A.

AWS guidance for agentic AI systems likewise recommends secure-coding standards that include code review and the use of static application-security tooling throughout development. It describes peer review as additional support for identifying vulnerabilities, logic errors and attack vectors. This is vendor guidance and should be treated as an example of a product approach, not independent validation of its effectiveness. Read the AWS development-practices guidance.

Decision framework: when to use which method

  • Use an assistant for acceleration: orientation, draft tests, candidate explanations, repetitive review questions and first-pass hypotheses.
  • Use automated analysis for scale: repeatable checks across pull requests and builds, especially when findings can be routed to a human for confirmation.
  • Use peer review for normal changes: validate implementation against team standards, data flow and expected behavior.
  • Use expert or independent review for high-risk changes: authentication, authorization, cryptography, payment or safety-critical logic, exposure of sensitive data, major trust-boundary changes and security fixes.
  • Use threat modeling when architecture or attacker capability changes: code-level inspection alone cannot establish that the system’s controls address the right threats.

The correct question is not “AI or humans?” It is “Which combination gives this change adequate coverage, accountable decisions and evidence that remediation worked?”

Bottom line

AI coding assistants are useful security assistants, but current evidence does not justify replacing traditional human review with them. Their outputs vary by task and context; automated vulnerability detection remains unreliable under tested conditions; and research coverage is heavily weighted toward detection rather than repair or explanation. A defensible process defines secure-coding standards, uses automated analysis and tests, keeps humans responsible for architecture and business logic, verifies every proposed fix and records triage in the normal development workflow. That layered approach treats AI as a force multiplier while preserving the accountability that security decisions require.
