How AI Coding Assistants Affect the Security and Quality of Open-Source Software

AI coding assistants can improve selected quality measures, but they do not make generated open-source code reliably secure. A randomized GitHub study found better test performance and modest gains in readability, reliability, maintainability and conciseness on a tightly defined Python exercise. Separate analyses of project snippets and a 2025 benchmark found substantial security weaknesses, insecure generation and incomplete repairs. For maintainers, the practical rule is simple: treat every AI-suggested change as untrusted proposed code that requires the same testing, security analysis and human review as any other contribution.

The short answer: quality gains are possible, security is not automatic

“Quality” is not one measurement. It can mean passing tests, readable style, maintainability, reliability, concise implementation, reviewer approval or fewer defects. Security is another dimension: code can pass its tests and look clean while still mishandling authentication, untrusted input, secrets, permissions or cryptography.

The strongest positive result comes from a randomized GitHub study published in 2024 and updated in 2025. Developers who had access to GitHub Copilot were more likely to pass all ten tests in a bounded Python web-server exercise, and blind reviewers found modest improvements in several style and engineering ratings. That result describes one task, one language and experienced developers; it is not a universal defect-rate estimate for open-source repositories.

Security-focused evidence is more cautionary. Fu and colleagues’ 2025 analysis of 733 snippets from GitHub projects found identified weaknesses in 29.5% of sampled Python snippets and 24.2% of sampled JavaScript snippets across 43 CWE categories. A 2025 benchmark of 20 proprietary and open-source models likewise found that models generally detected vulnerable code better than they generated secure code or repaired every vulnerability type. These figures are evidence about the studied samples and tasks, not a claim that the same percentage of all AI-assisted code is vulnerable.

What the controlled quality study actually measured

GitHub’s randomized study recruited 243 developers with at least five years of Python experience. Of those, 202 submitted valid solutions: 104 had Copilot access and 98 did not. Participants implemented a web server for fictional restaurant reviews and were assessed against ten unit tests. In a second phase, 25 developers reviewed submissions without knowing whether AI had been used; the submissions received 1,293 reviews.

Measure Reported result for the Copilot-access group How to interpret it
Passing all 10 unit tests 53.2% greater likelihood A relative result for this exercise, not a production open-source defect rate.
Readability 3.62% improvement in expert ratings A study-specific relative measure.
Reliability 2.94% improvement Applies to the experts’ ratings in this task.
Maintainability 2.47% improvement Does not prove long-term maintenance costs fall in real repositories.
Conciseness 4.16% improvement Conciseness alone is not evidence of security or correctness.
Reviewer findings Fewer readability errors and modestly higher ratings Blind review reduced authorship bias but still covered a small, artificial task.

The study’s “code error” definition focused on readability and coding-practice issues and did not include functional failures. The exercise also used experienced Python developers, a fictional application and a fixed test suite. Results therefore cannot be transferred directly to C or C++, infrastructure-as-code, cryptographic libraries, kernel code, unfamiliar repositories or projects with adversarial inputs. GitHub authored and reported the study, so its results should be read as vendor-published evidence rather than an independent industry-wide measurement.

What security studies found in generated project code

Fu et al. examined 733 snippets from GitHub projects generated by three assistants: Copilot, CodeWhisperer and Codeium. Their analysis covered Python and JavaScript and mapped findings to 43 Common Weakness Enumeration categories, including eight categories in the 2023 CWE Top 25.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Python: 29.5% of the sampled snippets had identified security weaknesses.
  • JavaScript: 24.2% of the sampled snippets had identified security weaknesses.
  • Examples of weaknesses: insufficiently random values, improper control of code generation and cross-site scripting.
  • Repair experiment: when Copilot Chat received static-analysis warning messages, up to 55.5% of identified issues were fixed under that study condition.

These percentages should not be presented as the vulnerability rate of all AI-generated code. The sample consisted of selected snippets from GitHub projects, the tools and languages were limited, and “identified weakness” depends on the analyzers and review procedure used. The repair result also means that static-analysis feedback improved some outputs in the experiment; it does not guarantee that a warning will be understood or fixed safely in your repository.

The practical implication is that ordinary code review is insufficient when reviewers only ask whether a feature works. They must also ask whether input is trusted, whether generated code changes execution or permissions, whether secrets can leak, and whether a dependency or configuration choice creates a new attack path.

Why detection ability does not equal secure generation

Mou and colleagues’ paper in the Proceedings of ACL 2025 evaluated 20 proprietary and open-source large language models on a multi-task benchmark. The tasks covered code completion, vulnerability repair, vulnerability detection and vulnerability classification.

Most models performed better at identifying vulnerable code than at generating secure code from scratch. They also struggled with particular vulnerability types and with repairing every issue correctly. A model can therefore produce a convincing explanation of a flaw after the flaw has been shown to it while still suggesting an unsafe implementation in the first place. Detection, classification, repair and generation are separate capabilities and should be tested separately when a project evaluates an assistant.

For open-source maintainers, this distinction matters in pull requests. A security scanner may flag a generated change, but a clean scan is not proof that the model’s design is safe. Conversely, a model’s explanation of a warning is not a substitute for reproducing the issue, understanding the threat model and verifying the patch.

How developers actually use assistants on security-sensitive work

Klemmer and colleagues combined 27 semi-structured interviews with analysis of 190 relevant Reddit posts and comments. Professionals reported using general and coding-specific assistants for security-critical activities, including code generation, threat modeling and vulnerability detection, even while expressing concerns about security and quality.

Participants’ mistrust led them to check suggestions much like suggestions from human colleagues. The qualitative study does not estimate how common these practices are among all developers, but it supports a clear operating principle: an assistant should be treated as a contributor whose work requires evidence, not as an authority whose output is trusted by default.

Separate vendor-published GitHub findings from 2023 reported that 85% of surveyed developers felt more confident in their code quality with Copilot and Copilot Chat and that code reviews were completed 15% faster. Those are perceptions and workflow measurements from a vendor study; faster review can be beneficial, but speed should never be used as a proxy for fewer vulnerabilities.

  1. Require disclosure in the contribution process. Ask contributors to identify substantial AI assistance, the assistant or model used when project policy requires it, and any prompts or generated files that affect licensing or provenance review. Do not treat disclosure as a substitute for testing.
  2. Inspect the complete diff. Review generated changes line by line, including configuration, migrations, lockfiles, test fixtures and deleted validation. Look for broad refactors hidden inside a feature request and for code that silently disables logging, authorization or error handling.
  3. Run the project’s full test suite. Execute unit, integration, regression and end-to-end tests rather than relying on tests created by the assistant. Add tests for failure paths, malformed input, permission boundaries and concurrency when those risks apply.
  4. Run language-appropriate static analysis and security scanners. Feed findings back to the assistant only as an aid to remediation. Confirm each proposed fix manually and rerun the scanner; a warning disappearing can mean the code was changed, not that the vulnerability was eliminated.
  5. Review dependencies and generated configuration. Check new packages, versions, transitive dependencies, build scripts, container files, CI workflows and permissions. Verify sources and licenses through the project’s normal process instead of accepting a plausible package name.
  6. Perform a threat-model review for sensitive paths. Trace data from entry points to storage, templates, shell commands, deserializers, network clients and authorization decisions. Identify trust boundaries and ask what an attacker controls at each one.
  7. Reproduce and document security findings. For a suspected issue, create a minimal failing test or proof of concept where safe, record the affected path and confirm the fix does not break legitimate behavior. Keep the reasoning in the pull request so future maintainers can audit it.
  8. Use human approval appropriate to risk. Require reviewers with relevant security or domain expertise for authentication, cryptography, sandboxing, parsers, privilege changes and release automation. A model-generated explanation cannot provide that accountability.

Security checks that deserve special attention

Untrusted input and output encoding

Generated web code may concatenate user-controlled values into SQL, shell commands, HTML or URLs. Verify parameterized queries, context-specific output encoding, allowlists and canonicalization. Test both ordinary and adversarial inputs; a happy-path test does not exercise cross-site scripting or injection.

Randomness, secrets and cryptography

Check whether tokens, reset links, session identifiers and nonces use a cryptographically secure source with sufficient entropy. Ensure secrets are not embedded in source, prompts, logs, fixtures or examples. Do not accept a cryptographic algorithm or mode merely because the code compiles.

Authorization and multi-tenant boundaries

Confirm authorization is enforced on every relevant object and operation, not only in the user interface or route handler. Test access using another user’s identifier, an expired session and a role with fewer privileges. AI-generated code often fills in the common path while omitting the boundary case that protects data separation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dynamic execution and deserialization

Review uses of eval-like features, template engines, reflection, plugin loading and deserialization. Verify that formats are constrained, dangerous types are blocked and generated code cannot be influenced by untrusted data. This is especially important because improper control of code generation was among the weakness categories reported by Fu et al.

Errors, logging and privacy

Make sure exceptions do not reveal credentials, tokens, personal data or internal paths. Check that logs are useful for incident response without becoming a second data-exfiltration channel. Confirm that retries, fallbacks and verbose debug modes are disabled or controlled in production.

How to judge “quality” without collapsing it into one score

Dimension Questions for a pull request
Functional correctness Does behavior match the specification, including invalid input and failure handling?
Testability Are tests independent, meaningful and able to catch regressions rather than merely increasing coverage?
Readability Can a maintainer understand names, control flow, assumptions and error paths without decoding boilerplate?
Maintainability Does the change fit project conventions, keep interfaces stable and avoid unnecessary duplication?
Reliability How does it behave under retries, timeouts, partial failure, concurrency and resource exhaustion?
Performance Are queries, loops, allocations and network calls appropriate for the repository’s workload?
Security Are trust boundaries, permissions, secrets, dependencies and abuse cases addressed?
Operability Can operators observe, configure, roll back and safely disable the feature?

A change can score well on readability and still fail security. It can pass all tests while being difficult to maintain, or be concise while hiding a dangerous side effect. Record separate review decisions instead of assigning one overall “AI quality” label.

How to compare assistants for an open-source project

The available evidence does not support a universal product ranking. A project should compare assistants against its own languages, repository patterns and risk profile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Comparison axis What to measure
Generation Correctness, test results, secure defaults and behavior on unfamiliar code.
Detection Precision and recall for the vulnerability classes that matter to the project.
Repair Whether fixes remove the root cause without introducing regressions or weakening controls.
Language and task fit Results for the project’s actual languages, frameworks, build system and deployment model.
Review workflow Ease of inspecting diffs, preserving context, recording prompts and routing high-risk changes.
Governance Data handling, access controls, auditability, licensing review and the project’s contribution policy.

Run a small, representative evaluation using historical bugs, security regression tests and realistic maintenance tasks. Keep generation, detection and repair results in separate columns. A tool that saves typing on boilerplate may still be unsuitable for security-sensitive code unless the review workflow compensates for its weaknesses.

Common mistakes when interpreting AI-code evidence

  • “It passed the tests, so it is secure.” Tests cover specified behavior; they rarely cover every attacker-controlled input or deployment misconfiguration.
  • “One study proves AI improves code quality everywhere.” The GitHub experiment used 202 experienced Python developers with a fictional restaurant-review server and ten tests.
  • “A 29.5% vulnerability rate applies to all generated Python.” That number describes sampled snippets and the methods used by Fu et al., not every repository or assistant.
  • “The model found the flaw, so it can fix it.” The ACL 2025 benchmark found detection generally stronger than secure generation and complete repair.
  • “Faster reviews mean safer reviews.” GitHub’s 2023 survey reported 15% faster reviews, but speed and perceived confidence do not establish lower vulnerability incidence.
  • “Disclosure solves the governance problem.” Knowing that code was AI-assisted helps triage; it does not replace provenance, license, security or maintainability review.

What this means for open-source project policy

Projects should write policies that are specific enough to enforce. Define when AI assistance must be disclosed, which files or subsystems require an expert reviewer, what tests and scanners must pass, and how contributors should handle generated dependencies or snippets with uncertain provenance. Protect confidential issue details and unpublished vulnerabilities from being pasted into external services unless the project has approved that data flow.

Maintain a human-owned threat model and coding standard. Assistants can help explain unfamiliar code, draft tests, suggest alternatives or summarize a scanner finding, but maintainers remain responsible for accepting the patch. For high-impact components, require reproducible tests, two-person review and a documented rollback plan regardless of whether the initial code came from a model or a person.

Bottom line

AI coding assistants are productivity tools with uneven effects. Controlled evidence shows that they can improve selected quality outcomes on a constrained task, while project-snippet analysis and the ACL 2025 benchmark show that insecure generation remains common and that repair is incomplete. Open-source projects get the benefit only when assistants are placed inside a disciplined workflow: inspect the diff, test beyond the happy path, run static and security analysis, review dependencies and trust boundaries, and assign accountable human approval. The assistant may write the first draft; the project’s maintainers must establish that the final code is correct, maintainable and safe.
